Stopped in here several times as we were staying upstairs. Drinks were great staff was friendly and the food was tasty. Had breakfast here one day too and that was a smart move, waitress was very nice. Room was very cool, we stayed here on our 4th and 5th night in St John's and I'm still trying to figure out where I lost my favorite flannel from Pelican Brewing, we were in Canada for about two weeks and the places with housekeeping were definitely hiding my clothes... definitely an awesome place to stay and experience St John's. read more

This is a review for the dinner. We were without a reservation and got into town a bit too late- it was 9 pm and we were a large family table, and so we couldn't get into the resto we wanted to. We wandered in here because at least the servers were friendly and would accommodate- the table was cozy and it started off nicely but the food was just inedible. Pictured are the beef burger- it was so hard I couldn't even bite into it, the fish tacos which were soggy and tasting like it was frozen. And the fries that came out completely soggy that I wondered if it was a thing but no. They had somehow made fries drenched in oil and just served it like that. When I mentioned it to the waitress she offered to bring me new fries but by then it was just too late and I had no faith. The beer at the table also came with a huge crack in the glass- and the server replaced it promptly. Overall I'd say wonderful servers- keep it up but the food and kitchen needs a LOT of work. I'd call it a tourist trap. I do not recommend. read more

Excellent food, phenomenal service and people that go out of their way to make sure your experience is first class. We were in St. Johns for our honeymoon trip and were able to get a reservation the day before. Friendly as soon as we walked in. Our server was a class act, well versed and knowledgable about the menu and drinks but in a down to earth way. We ordered the pork belly for an appetizer and the seared tuna and duck for our entrees. Perfectly prepared and made with love- a rarity it seems nowadays. We had a drink at the end that the server and the bartender were not familiar with, and they went out of their way to make their take on it which exceeded expectations. Recently I've been losing faith in the service industry, but this experience restores my appreciation for craft of dining. Bravo. read more

Street parking It is nearly impossible to get a table anywhere in Newfoundland so a reservation in advance is a very wise idea, otherwise you will have a rough time. We were lucky that this place had one table available when we walked into the bar cause when u called they did not have anything available. SPRITZER closest thing to the ones I had in florence I am impressed, I would have so many of those they were pretty great RICOTTA CANELLONI pretty good overall but if I needed to get something out of the plate would be the lemon sauce, too overwhelming, so much soy hat I could nearly taste the truffle and that is a cardinal sin to me, truffle is an amazing taste and so pristine it should never be overpowered much less for something as mundane as lemon. CHOCOLATE CAKE- a bit burned on the edges but the cream on top and the strawberries made sure that the burned flavor did not spoil my experience. hope that this burning isn't a regular thing and it only happened to me. over all the cake was pretty good given it was a bit burned. They dont believe in A/C so it can get pretty warm while eating here. forget bout parking at this place as the area is street parking only and some private lots but this is the downtown so depending on what time you come it can get pretty busy and hard to find a spot. the servings here are not as large so do not come here too crazy hungry you will be disappointed if you do. overall beautiful place, the service could be better but the server was friendly overall, the food needs some work on from the serving size to the seasoning overpower but it is ok to give it a try if you must. read more

Blue on water is a hotel, restaurant and bar. If you're looking for something quieter the restaurant is a great option. The food and service were great. The items on the menu show refinement and creativity, like picked watermelon rind in a salad or smoked dates! I had a hard time deciding just on one dish, so I tried the cauliflower with Garam masala with the smoked dates appetizer, definitely big enough to share! Then I tried the lemon ricotta cannelloni. Wasn't a huge fan of the consistency of the ricotta filling. Last but not least the caramel cheesecake, flourless chocolate cake and soft churned coffee ice cream!!! In order of recommendations: cheesecake, coffee ice cream and then the flourless chocolate cake (a bit too dry). All in all, great experience! Even as a vegetarian in Newfoundland, who can't share everyone else's enthusiasm for lobster and fish! read more

Blue On Water is a fancy fine dining restaurant located right downtown St. John's. I came here to accompany my friends cravings for seafood and was shocked at how many wonderful vegetarian options they had on the menu. I ordered the roasted cauliflower and found it to be exceptionally delicious, sweet, and spiced. The presentation of the food here is 5 stars and I would go as far to stay the taste is 5 stars as well. Our server was experienced, knowledgeable, and friendly. I do wish they had a more original and uniquely crafted cocktail menu as opposed to the signature cocktails they offered; I felt like that was the only thing missing from my dining experience. All and all, I feel very comfortable recommending Blue on Water to friends and strangers to eat! read more

We have been to cheerful bars and fancy restaurants, but we will never forget our time at Blue on Water, From the owners to the staff, all were amazingly friendly and sincere, throughout our stay, our room was gorgeous and the cleaning staff kept it clean and fresh, Many thanks to Sully, (Sullivan) and Pete, who made our stay memorable. Sully, with his cheerful greetings and funny banter, we couldn't thank him enough for his personal assistance to pick us up when my wife injured her ankle and we couldn't get a cab! When we returned to the hotel, our family & friends (so grateful to have them in our lives) ordered dinner delivered to our room, The meal included the best seafood chowder I've ever tasted, with the seafood linguine, and the creme brulee, it was an out of body experience! Just so thankful that we stayed at Blue on Water, coolest hotel/bar/restaurant in Newfoundland, and thanks again to Sully, Pete and the staff, our experience in St. John's will be one of our fondest memories and remains in our bucket list to return in the future. read more

Where to start. From the beginning I guess. First time family visit with a reserved table to celebrate a 17th birthday. Hostess showed us to our table booth near the kitchen at rear of restaurant. We asked could we move to a vacant window table..'No, its reserved'. Waitress could not have been more curt. Unfortunately it's all downhill from here. Over an hour to get food. Soda served in small thin cocktail glasses loaded with ice to maximize profits - charged for refills of course - $12. Ordered cod tacos and got chicken. $45 steak was bland with complimentary thick cartilage still attached. Caesar salad with housemade dressing tasted like nothing but lemon..for what dressing there was. Our reservation stated it was for a birthday. At no time did waitress acknowledge. A thoroughly disappointing exp for which I had the pleasure of paying $160. Needless to say we won't be back. read more

I had a great lunch slash day-drinking sesh at this new age pub on Water Street complete with my own Allan Hawco spotting for a little extra dose of Newfoundland awesome! Skip the white linen restaurant side for the tall tables and concrete bar that's much more comfortable for a couple cocktails. The mixed drink menu is pretty sweet and sugary but they were happy to make whatever I wanted from their very well stocked bar. My Old Fashioned was a bit...light, so maybe stick to simpler drinks if you really mean business. I can only speak to the lunch menu but the Emmental grilled cheese on sour dough with truffle Parmesan fries was a treat and a half, not to mention a steal at about $12 for more food than I could dream of finishing. I believe half my Sammie was left on the plate and it wasn't for lack of trying. The downside? Some of the slowest service I've ever experienced. I'd say it took half an hour to get our drinks. I came here recently in a group for brunch. The place is very clean and has a sleek contemporary design. Not a lot of seating but a there is an adjacent bar that is larger. The restrooms were clean and looked fairly new. For brunch I had the two egg breakfast with ham. It was a very good sized meal and it tasted fresh. The eggs were a little watery or maybe not fully cooked which kind of turned me off to finishing them. I also had a glass of milk which was served to me in a very chilled glass which I thought was wonderful. The waitress wasn't overly friendly she seem annoyed somewhat. Maybe it wasn't her day but regardless you should always have a smile. I would come back and I would recommend the brunch to others. What really made the experience 4 stars instead of three was the chilled glass of milk. The food overall was tasty but nothing to get excited about. Definitely a good place to take a group though. read more

I decided to come here with a couple friends since we wanted to go to a higher end restaurant downtown as I would be leaving the province the following day. As mentioned in other reviews, this place is downtown, so parking can be a bit difficult, but I was expecting it as its pretty much the same issue across all restaurants downtown St. John's. The entrance was quite weird, as there was an open bar section, then a closed off dining section that we had made reservations for. We ended up going into the bar section first because we didn't understand how the restaurant was laid out. The inside is really nice, and the server hung our jackets up for us. There was also a small wedding group dressed up super fancy at another table, so we definitely felt under-dressed. The wait for our meals was a bit long, but since I had ordered a steak, I can understand why it took longer than the average restaurant. We were even offered a free bread appetizer with olive oil and balsamic for our wait. I got the Beef Striploin ($34) 10oz special of the day, which came with potatoes, gravy, almonds, cheese, cauliflower, and a nice garnish. The 10oz of steak may have been too much, but it was awfully delicious. The thick cut of meat mixed very well with the mashed potatoes & gravy, as well as the thin slices of almonds which gave the plate a nice crunch. Surprisingly, the cheesy cauliflower was the highlight of the plate other than the steak. I can't remember what cheese they used, but if I went back I would absolutely need to ask. I haven't been to other pricier spots downtown St. John's, but I was super impressed by the quality of steak for the reasonable price. It would have been nice to be served our dishes a bit quicker, but the quality of the dish was awesome. Also, I appreciate how there was some lower priced dish (burger & fries) for our friend who didn't want to spend as much going out to a nice restaurant. I would definitely come here again if I was looking for a good steak downtown St. John's. read more

Had two very different and separate meals here (both were on the bar side). One was lunch, where it was very quiet (seafood chowder is a must try, pea fries are a do not try) and one was dinner where it was quite crowded and busy (crab mac and cheese is also a must try). Service was great both times, esp at lunch and we were there with a big group. I was asked how my food was and I noted that the pea fries were super dry and inedible. I declined their offer for a replacement, and they took the fries off my bill. Even though it was busy at dinner (pretty sure there was a game on), we still received prompt service. There are a lot of bars/pubs to choose from along the way. Try Blue if you'd like, if you don't, you're not missing out. read more

If you like boutique hotels, stay here. In fact, just stay here, the rooms have an interesting design and setup - each unique. The beds a re "ok" but nothing to whine about, too soft for my liking. Location wise, perfect. Moving forward, I will keep staying here and would highly recommend it. Now... the restaurant isn't quite aligned with the hotel. Breakfast is good, but who really messes that one up?! Lunch works / convenient, but nothing to rave. Dinner (ribeye) was disappointing. For the price, I was expecting more. Same for desert. What appears as a snazzy hotel is supported by a mediocre restaurant. It's not terrible but.. Like I sad before, it's not aligned with the hotel expectations. read more

Came in for brunch and no tables without a reso on the restaurant side so sat self seating at the pub side. First thing, it was terribly hot inside for April. Like uncomfortable. Mimosas sorta made it better, sorta. The food took over 40 min to come out. Seemed like it was the same problem throughout the restaurant as many people were complaining about waiting, and our side was only half full. Breakfast burrito was nothing special, not enough eggs, too much cheese. See my pic to see how the sauce came out, messy, half Full and looked unappetizing. Smoked salmon Benedict was average All in all it was a disappointing experience with OK food and the long wait didn't help. Maybe would have been better on the restaurant side? Blue On Blue was a drip-in surprise - quiet, enthusiastic service, menu of interesting small and large, careful selection of wines, and specials that attracted half our party of four. Oysters from PEI were sweet and fresh, salads generous, scallops and halibut perfectly cooked, shared desserts just fine. I'd highly recommend a visit, perhaps in preference to those higher in the St. John's list; you should not be disappointed. read more

I like to not be rushed throughout my meal but it was a bit much. Slow to take your order (at least 30 minutes), and it felt like we were waiting a particularly long time for each course. Had an amazing salon dinner here for a really reasonable price. Service was great. Very friendly and very fast. Gave me a run down of the specials that day but I was hell bent on getting some salmon while I was out in st-johns. It's was perfectly cooked, crispy exterior and a soft fall apart in your mouth interior. Taste was top notch and I would definitely rate it as my number one salmon meal. All in all a great atmosphere in here with good music, good tv programming and a great view of the street. The only problem I had was that I did not find this place 4 days ago when I got here. We were not in a rush but from the time order was taken to service ppl were checking their watches. The food was very disappointing. Seafood Tagliatelle as barely 1/2 cup with meagre bits and pieces of unidentifiable fish in a thin tomato sauce. Three mussels .. Count them.. 3! No cracked pepper.. Parmesan or follow up from server. Other dishes at the table equally disappointing.. A micro steak... A poutine with dried out fries in sickly BBQ sauce... And a lobster sandwich on bread so tough it was a challenge.. After the meal.. The wait for the check seemed interminable. I've been to Blue on Water several times and this restaurant continues to meet my expectations. I have been to Blue for brunch and lunch, so my comments will reflect those experiences. Atmosphere: Casual, relaxed, friendly staff and pretty typical service/wait time. Food: I've only ever had the smoked salmon bagel and seafood chowder (appetizer) + steak and fries (main). Both meals were quite delicious and I would happily recommend them. They specialize (from what I know) in seafood. Price: Both the brunch and lunch range from $10-25 Overall: I will continue to recommend this restaurant to both friends and tourists alike. I dined here for the first time tonight with my boyfriend. We did not have a reservation but only needed to wait 15 minutes for a table. The staff were very friendly. We ordered an appetizer that came quickly, followed by our main courses of chicken and steak. The steak was delicious, the only problem was it was too small! But the delicious home cut fries and split peas made up for that. It was a great meal in a comfortable environment. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a night out. read more
