That place in the middle of nowhere where you just say "I'm going in because I'm hungry as hell!" On travel for work and was dropped literally in the middle of nowhere. No fast food chains. No restaurant chains. No recognizable stores. No recognizable businesses (actually saw a video rental store... remember those?). Even the hotel I was staying at was stuck in the year 1985 (Marty McFly where you at?). And... because my hotel was older than dirt and offered no real breakfast options besides a microwave and a packet of microwaveable oatmeal, I walked into town looking for a place for breakfast. The first place was locked and then I came across this place. The server greeted us and I could tell it was one of those "Cheers" atmospheres where everybody knows your name (except mine). I ordered their Protein Special for breakfast which was basically eggs, sausage, bacon. Everything actually tasted great despite what my heart thinks and the bill was even better (cheaper than a McDonald's breakfast meal). Quick service and was even able to make it back on the plane in time.

In town for Christmas and needed some good hangover breakfast. Bluebird Cafe was the perfect antidote. Warm, small, local, and festively decorated galley style digs. We arrived before noon on the tail end of a short rush - service was good. Menus, coffee and a few minutes to decide while the two tables ahead of us ordered. We both opted for the Hunters Skillet: cheesy hashbrowns, onions, eggs of choice, sausage or ham, toast. Took about a half hour for the solo cook to get our orders out, but we weren't in a hurry. The coffee kept flowing, we hashed over the holiday shenanigans with the family and a local fella named Tom introduced himself and told us the abridged story of his life. I'm kind of a big eater and once our skillets arrived, I was NOT disappointed. Big pile of scrambles on top of the hash b's, cut up lil' smokie sausages throughout and plenty of melted cheese on top. Delicious! Not greasy at all, even tho I would have been just fine with greezy this Boxing Day. Usually this would have been too much food for my famished wife, but there's a gold star on the fridge for her clean plate. She also special ordered her skillet and it came just as ordered. Two thumbs up from her! We sat in the first booth by the front window and I faced the street, so I couldn't see the goings on behind me. The missus said one of the tables ordered burgers and they came out on Kaiser rolls and appeared to be hand formed patties. She said they looked good. Can't confirm that, but I'd certainly try a burger here based on our breakfast. In the end, next time we're in Clintonville, we'll be visiting Schultz's Bluebird Cafe! PS, congrats and good luck on your first marriage after 61 years, Tom! Good job taking your time to find the right one. =)

Delicious food. Friendly staff and very accommodating. Breakfast was a little bit of a wait but well worth the wait. Picture attached of cinnamon roll pancake.

I love old school cafe's. Not the trendy upscale places that are popping up all over touristy WI, but the real ones that have survived for decades. Schultz's Bluebird Cafe is the real deal. This narrow little diner has that cozy feeling complete with a three stool counter. The breakfast skillet is the thing to order and even the Junior is plentiful and delicious! The waitress is chatty and helpful. I have a feeling the new trendier diner across the street has cut into their biz. Somehow I think they'll find a way to survive.

Before I go into detail about each one I had, I want to say that all of them were good and have a filling! If that isn't reason enough to check out this bakery, I don't know what is. Red Velvet: This one was my favorite! The cream cheese frosting, red velvet cake, and chocolate ganache-like/pudding center should be proof enough. I would eat this cake until I got sick. It is fantastic! Lick the Bowl: The lady that was helping me said that this is the best seller. Its oreo-flavored icing is light and tastes like it was whipped. This cake is moist and bring the flavors of the cupcake together very well. Lastly, a mini brownie and cookie dough piece both garnish the top. Peanut Butter Cup: A good choice if you like peanut butter. The chocolate cake is either dry or overcooked. However, the icing has a rich flavorful taste and the center is a chocolate ganache. Cookie Dough Craving: Perfect if you like cookie dough. The buttercream icing is my favorite. However, the chocolate cake is either dry or overcooked. It is garnished with a piece of cookie dough and the center is the same. I recommend going to this bakery if you're in or around Appleton!

On visit 2 (a few weeks later) we asked the owner about the flavors that were not in the cupcakes we purchased. She said it should have tasted like the names. We expressed our disappointment with how she names them vs the flavor because 4 out of 5 did not reflect the name. Blueberry cupcake....Not only did the cupcake not taste like blueberry but the "blueberry" on top was not even a blueberry. The mint cupcakes are vanilla dyed green and the only flavor we could taste was the chocolate chips. The cookie dough is more of a sugar peanut butter blend (very grainy). Our favorite cupcakes to date.... Cookies and cream, salted Carmel and maple bacon. Our last visit was last week and we have to travel to get to her location (we are opposite side of town) and she was closed.....during the week. We follow her on Facebook as well and nothing was posted on that site (this is not the first time that we have traveled to find her closed). We ended up stopping at a new bakery in town. We now have 3 sweet bakery's in a 15 mile radius (2 just opened) It will be interesting to see how I Sparkle is impacted. She's got the "pretty" look but the flavors are up for grabs in my opinion. Overall we will continue to visit I Sparkle because the cupcakes are cute. My recommendation to new customers..... ALWAYS ASK what the cupcake tastes like vs the name and if you are traveling there CALL ahead since she closes without notice.

But this Frankenstein version that Mike's offers that is seemingly a blend of both a kringle and a king cake (the real New Orleans kind)? Heck ya. I will gladly devour this and will be back as often as my travels allow. I was passing through town and stopped in around noon on a Saturday and was thankful to see they had not yet sold out of Kringles for the day. Almond was the only choice left, so I went for it ($22.95)! Plus, a fudgy brownie because why not? Customer service was very friendly and helpful. After checking out I placed the massive kringle and brownie in the trunk so I could get it home to my family without me nibbling on it the entire 2-hour drive home. Once home, I have never seen my family devour a kringle so fast. From the grandparents to the little kiddos, everyone enjoyed Mike's take on a kringle. This should be the default version of a kringle! Oh, and that fudgy brownie? The best I have ever had. All the kudos, stars and compliments I can provide. We were fortunate enough to visit one of the more popular locations in Uncle Mike's Bake Shoppe. They were pretty busy when we arrived. Looking inside there is a refrigerated section with some homemade goods, some doughnuts and fresh baked bread, and the piece de resistance, the kringle. They had several flavors including blueberry and caramel apple which they were unfortunately out of. We ended up selecting two halves since we couldn't make our mind and you only live once. We went with the Door County Cherry and Strawberry Cream Cheese. They also had some very generous samples available. First of all, the "half" kringle is huge. Looks more like a whole kringle. We really enjoyed each of them. Both flaky, buttery and tender. Loved the Door County Cherry but we might give the edge to the Strawberry Cream Cheese. That is a really tasty and indulgent combination. They do ship their kringles however getting a fresh one is a special treat. Some of the best kringles that we have ever had!
