We opted to take what was sold as a 10 hour day trip to old forge on the Christmas Train.
It's hard to know where to start and the fact is there is WAY too much to tell in this limited review space. But I guarantee, this was thee single most miserable experience I've ever paid to be a part of.
The Train ride was supposed to be 4 hours (2 hours up & 2 hours back) with a 6 hour layover in Old Forge to do whatever you like. But "whatever you like" really boils down to going through the many shops and catching a meal. I even naively thought about maybe taking in a movie at the Antique movie theater. Well, the trip turned into a grueling 11 hour shi@show that (astonishingly) was bad every single minute. How do you pack 11 hours (yes, 11) of misery into a yelp review? One almost has to experience this for themselves to really understand but I wouldn't wish such an experience on even my worst enemy. So allow me to hit at least the highlights.
Keep in mind the train ride portion is just that. A ride, period full stop. There's no entertainment on the 4 hour ride for children (which was a selling point, mind) and scheduled activities during the layover includes a Short parade lasting a total of maybe 10 min, culminating in a tree lighting ceremony that generously takes up about another 5 minutes, and finally, a chance to meet Santa Clause. So, in terms of "Kids Activities", in a 10 hour trip (that turned into 11 hours), you got maybe a half hour worth of activities that children MIGHT find interesting. So, Kids being kids, they're going to find ways of entertaining themselves one way or another. Now Imagine being in a confined area with elbow to elbow people for 11 hours. Mind, we ain't talking about one kid here, oh no. THERE WERE A LOT OF THEM. Add into this mix the obligatory drunks that seem to appear out of thin air on any trip, and your starting to get a feeling for where I'm going here.
Why on earth,,, would you bring young children on such an excursion? And the answer is you have to fit a certain Parenting profile to be so ignorant as to do such a thing. You won't be disappointed here either because the parents of these children are exactly the kind of parents that you'd imagine. So tell me friends,,, what kind of children exactly do you think we're dealing with here? I'll give you a hint. They ain't what one would describe as mild mannered and well behaved.
But lest ye think this is the full story, you couldn't be more incorrect. Oh no friends, we've only scratched the tip of the proverbial iceberg here. There's the whole rest of the godda@n iceberg yet to discover. When I tell you that every single thing that could go wrong or otherwise be messed up, did go wrong and was otherwise messed up, I'm not playing word games or spouting hyperbole. I mean that in very precise terms. Here's a short very incomplete list.
The departure time was delayed. The train ride went longer than scheduled. The layover time magically transformed from 6 hours to just 3 (which in the end turned out to be simultaneously a small blessing and a curse). The return train was scheduled to leave at 7:30, yet all of the shops (save some of the food places) closed at 5. The last shuttle to return people to the train station was at 6pm. Tell me folks, what do you suppose there is to do for an hour and a half while one waits for the return train? And just where would you expect one to be doing this activity? Mind you, IT'S FRIGGIN WINTER OUTSIDE!!!!!!!! And the list goes on and on and on and on for 11 hours the list of things goes on.
We aren't strangers to Old Forge. We quite enjoy going through the shops and spending time there. But we've never been during christmas season and we've never been on a train. So you're left to your own devices to kind of build up this picture in your head of what the experience will be like. People (myself included) tend picture a romanticized version of riding an antique train (in perfect working order of course) decorated for the season which trundles you along to a quaint little tourist town in the mountains; where the world will be blanketed in silver snow and the town will be decked in its most festive best and full of towns folk with open and welcoming arms to greet you and treat you to a picturesque currier and Ives Christmas scene.
Nothing at all could be further from reality. The behavior of the children aside, the sheer amount of hacking and coughing (and vomiting) on the train was worrisome to put it mildly. The bathrooms on the train are in equal disrepair to the outward appearance of the cars. Each car has two bathrooms, yet there were only two "Working Bathrooms" on the whole train. Did you ever wonder what it's like to shit in a public RV toilet without water? You will!! And the town bizarrely seemed genuinely surprised to see us all there as if there were no coordination, which leads to a whole other host of issues.
AVOID the adk Scenic Railroad folks. You've been warned. read more
