Very informative walking tour, even for a San Francisco native. Our group was very small (8 total,…read moreincluding our docent, Lois) compared to the other Chinatown walking tour groups that we saw along the way. Our docent customized the tour to what each person of the group wanted to hear/learn more about which I thought was very cool. Our tour was also accompanied by print outs of articles and photographs which were helpful aids. Though they say to arrive 10-15 minutes prior to the tour to check in, on Saturdays, when the tour begins at 10am, it is not quite as necessary to arrive earlier. The Chinese Culture Center is not open until 10am and the docents don't arrive until 10am either. We parked at Portsmouth ($4/hour) since we wanted to arrive earlier to check-in, but we actually had enough time to park at the (farther) garage that the Chinese Culture Center validates.

I happened to be walking through Union Square one weekend morning and saw a gentleman dressed as Emperor Norton. I thought he was a street performer, but boy was I surprised to find out he was about to lead a walking tour! Being a history nerd and someone who was already familiar with the Emperor, I bought a ticket for the downtown tour on the spot, and had such a good experience the next day I bought a ticket for the waterfront tour. It's an enjoyable, leisurely stroll through San Francisco -- full of fun facts and trivia about the city, and Joseph is a delightful host and guide. I feel he lives up to the ideals and sentiments of both Emperor Norton and the city of San Francisco itself, and this is my #1 recommendation whenever a friend tells me they're going to visit SF (although, of course, I'm always sure to NEVER refer to it as "Frisco").

Whether it is trolling or mooching, his knowledge helped us not get skunked. I am looking forward to getting out and doing some livebait striper fishing with him this season. When the livebait (anchovies) start becoming plentiful, probably by June, I look forward to getting out with him. He will take group charters out with as few as 7 or 8 people during the week, which is great...lots of elbow room. He has rod/reel rental and terminal tackle onboard if you don't have your own equipment. His boat is berthed out of Fisherman's Wharf, and the nearest parking is in a garage about 5 blocks away (he does validate parking), you have a pretty long haul if you're loaded down with fish. Also, some of his deckhands are not the most cordial.

I showed my Go City pass to the bus driver at one of the stops, and he provided a paper ticket that gave me the two days. When you board, there are ear plug sets. Get the ear plug set, since you will need them to hear the stops called out. There are two jacks for each set of seats and a running narration with fun information about the city and the stops. You can sit inside or upstairs in the open air area. I used the bus at the end of July in the mornings starting around 10:15 - 11:00 am at bus stop 2, Columbus/Ghirardelli Square which is in front of the Hotel Caza across from Marriott Fisherman's Wharf. It is a 6 minute walk to Ghirardelli Square. I always found a seat, and the bus was about 10 - 20 minutes after the time the app said it would be. I recommend you go to the website ahead of time and have the list of stops and the attractions near each and plan ahead. Bring your coat if you plan to get off at the Golden Gate stops 11 and 12. It is super windy and chilly. I took the bus to the stop 3 North Beach / Chinatown which lets you off at North Beach and stop 5 Ferry Building which lets you off across the street. I also did the entire loop getting off at stop 11 South Vista Point / Golden Gate Bridge - get off there for the Golden Gate Visitor Center, a view of the bridge, and information about the bridge up the ramp, and a cafe. Bathrooms are in the parking lot. Hold onto your hat as your cross the bridge or it will get blown off when you ride the bus. IMPORTANT NOTE: ** Stop 11 South Vista Point / Golden Gate Bridge lists Botanical Gardens. It is about 3.2 miles or over 1 hour, 15 minutes by walking. ** Stop 12 North Vista Point / Golden Gate Bridge gives you a panoramic view of San Francisco. The last stop is stop 17 Pier 39 with the sea lions, Aquarium of the Bay, Boudin sourdough bakery, and restaurants. It was an all-day adventure that gave us the opportunity to visit all the highlighted sights while still having the freedom to take breaks and explore at our own pace. We could easily step away from the self-guided tour and reconvene whenever we were ready without missing a beat. That was cool hidden treasures I would say. We went to Cafe Sport in North Beach. I will absolutely be back. The pasta and sauce were amazing, and the homemade bread? Let's just say it didn't stand a chance. Then we made our way to Chinatown where Blandina dropped some history on us things I definitely didn't know before. We then went to Chinatown stopped by Far East (Restaurant), where we had some spicy, delicious chowmein it is must to go back. The Reason: The Sightseeing Pass was bought by another company who STOPPED payment to most of the vendors listed on their website. It was very disappointing to visit each vendor and be turned away, even though we paid to visit these sites! I do not blame the vendors. They would go out of business if they tried to honor all the fraudulent passes that the sightseeing company is selling! The blame is 100% on the sightseeing company who continues to sell passes even though they will not pay most of the vendors. Here's what is no longer accepted: Madam Tussaud's wax museum, Ripley's Mirror Maze, the Hop On Hop Off Big Bus Tour, the Muni (street car), 7D experience at Fisherman's Wharf. I have called and emailed and received no answer and no response. Please do no waste your money on this pass! VERY DISAPPOINTING.
