Before we got to SF, we did some research on Bay Cruises. We as budget travelers decided not to book anything online and just go with the flow. BEST DECISION; we walked by and heard the guys saying it was $15 cash, so we instantly paid. They let us bring wine on the ride. We got close to Alcatraz, went near the Bridge and even saw some marine wildlife (dolphins and sea otter). We were incredibly happy with the decision! The captain was super knowledgeable with the area and the history and he even made some jokes. The best part was when he played "Boats n Hoez" from the step brother movie! I have fished with Captain Joe Nazar on a few different occasions. When salmon fishing was still possible (closed last year and this year), Captain Joe was good about putting our group on the fish. Whether it is trolling or mooching, his knowledge helped us not get skunked. I am looking forward to getting out and doing some livebait striper fishing with him this season. When the livebait (anchovies) start becoming plentiful, probably by June, I look forward to getting out with him. He will take group charters out with as few as 7 or 8 people during the week, which is great...lots of elbow room. He has rod/reel rental and terminal tackle onboard if you don't have your own equipment. His boat is berthed out of Fisherman's Wharf, and the nearest parking is in a garage about 5 blocks away (he does validate parking), you have a pretty long haul if you're loaded down with fish. Also, some of his deckhands are not the most cordial. read more

It's says its a fishing trip but it's not. So that's good. They take you under the Golden Gate Bridge and round Alcatraz for only 15$. They are way cheaper than the 30$ dollar ferry. If you come to the wharf, only take this Boat. The hosts are hilarious and they play music plus offer food and drinks for a small coast. It was a great experience. The 2nd time I came to SF I made the mistake of taking another boat because these guys were already on tour. It was a big mistake to take the other one and not wait for these guys to come back. The other boat ride was 15$ too but they didn't play music and weren't even funny. Although they gave more accurate historical facts, about the places, it was still really boring. They were nothing like these guys! I love this boat and this crew. Definitely recommend this boat to anyone who is looking for a fun time and good experience for a low cost. read more

Brought our entire family and loved it! The boat isn't too small or too big. Just the right size to have an intimate tour but not feel like you are going to capsize. We stayed at the front of the boat and had fun having the waves splash in our face. There is indoor and rear seating if getting soaked isn't your thing. The tour guides were fun and light hearted. They gave you enough info on the sites to feel educated but weren't blasting facts into your ears every second. For $15/person we felt this was well worth it. Will come again. read more

My friends and I were walking around on our last afternoon in SF and spontaneously decided to take this boat tour after we heard Joe inviting people to join them as they were about to leave. This was legitimately my favorite part of my first trip to SF. Joe and Dave made the hour long ride under the bridge and around Alcatraz so fun with trip-relevant music (Gilligan's Island theme song, I'm on a Boat, and the like) and jokes galore. Joe even let me steer for a couple of minutes, and took pictures of us while at the wheel! I had been a little bummed that I didn't realize that we needed to get tickets for the Alcatraz tour ahead of time, but this definitely made up for that and was worth way more than the $15 they charge. If I ever return to SF, this tour will definitely be in my plans! read more

We celebrated my husband's 30th birthday on Captain Joe's boat "Kitty Kat" and I cannot describe in a few words the fun time that we had. The boat was just perfect-clean, neat, spacious and very weel maintained. But more than the boat Captain Joe and his buddy were simply great. I am a person who usually freakes out on a boat and especially hate the rocking. Luckily the day of our event the weather was superb-It wasn't cold or windy. I had mentioned to Joe that we just wanted to go in calm waters and have a great time and didn't want people to get sea sick. Joe ensured our wish was fulfilled and took us around the bay where the waters were calm. We had tons of food and alcohol on the boat and Joe was not fussy about anything at all. My friends and I came from LA to explore San Francisco for a couple of days and we were about to buy a tour package to go on a cruise around the bay area (and to see Alcatraz) the night before. This year I decided to throw my birthday on a boat, and researched charters on the Bay. My boyfriend had rented one of Captain Joe's boats last year for a bachelor party, and they had a fantastic experience. We ended up getting set up with one of Joe's boat's called Happy Days, that had a capacity of roughly 35-37 people (we probably could have fit about 38-39 comfortably, but did not realize that until we boarded). Our captain was Chris, and we spent 2 hours cruisin and boozin, and had an AMAZING time. Chris drove us where ever we wanted on the bay including McCovey Cove (there was a home game at At&t park). On top of that he allowed us to plug in an iPod and listen to our own music, as well as bring on whatever food or drink we wanted. It was all around awesome, and I highly recommend anyone looking for a fun and creative way to throw a party to get in touch with Joe to rent a boat for a few hours for a cruise on the bay. EPIC! I rented Captain Joe's Kitty Kat for private charter mid-June 2014 and it exceeded all of my expectations. Captain Joe was quick to respond to my email inquiries, and flexible when we had to cancel last minute due to rain. We re-scheduled, and had an absolute blast during our 3-hour sunset cruise. The boat comfortably held 45 people, had 2 bathrooms, and a nice inside seating area. Captain Joe and Ron let us blast music, make announcements on the loud speaker, use their cooler for beer, and allowed us to have an overall amazing experience. We were looking forward to this salmon fishing trip for a month. We bought $1000 worth of tickets, gear, and fishing licenses. We went to bed early the night before and woke up at 4am to arrive on time. We got to the pier and learned Joe had double-booked the boat for two groups. There was plenty of room aboard the boat for both groups. Our group was OK with sharing. The other group wasn't. Captain Rod didn't want to explain to the other group what "sharing" was all about. Astonishingly, when we turned our backs, Captain Rod got on the boat and set sail with the other group and left us on the dock holding our bags and the sandwiches we had packed for the trip. We had a 6-year-old in our group so it was a good opportunity to teach him about sharing and being kind to others. On the phone Captain Joe said "this doesn't happen very often". He blamed his scheduling software instead of owning up to his mistake and making the situation right. Captain Joe offered us 1 free ticket on a future date, which we obviously will not be taking advantage of given the absurdity of how they run the business. I'm sure this trip is really fun if you get on it, but keep in mind they can't keep their schedule straight and they don't take responsibility for their errors.
