I am leaving an updated review on this facility. When I initially placed my mother in the Aegis Moraga facility in May 2021, I believed it was a highly skilled environment with strong, honest, and educated management and care teams. However, this could not be further from the current reality. Recently my mother's care costs were randomly and dramatically increased without proper communications or justification. This egregious occurrence was met with management silence and non-communication. Upon the advice of my legal counsel, I immediately moved my mother out of this facility. This situation has placed an immense mental, physical, and financial burden on my family. In addition, my earlier Yelp review was truncated and a portion was posted on their website. My In-laws moved here when they were no longer able to live in their home without a full time live in helper. My MIL is in the memory care side and Aegis care brought her back from the brink of death. My FIL moved into Aegis to be near my MIL, and we are very happy with their placement. The care they have received has been fabulous and I am very grateful for the experience to date. While the cost is steep, the facilities, people and programs make it a great place for the help needed with aging parents. Molly the director of Aegis of Moraga went above & beyond her job description! After our father has spent sometime in & out of the hospital, Molly reached out to us to come & visit Andy because she missed his positive energy & genuine kindness around Aegis. Molly suggested we meet with the social worker at the hospital to help Andy get comfortable. After meeting with social worker our father was placed into hospice. Molly understood 'end of life' & we did not. If it wasn't for Molly to help us understand we would've been struggling with our father's passing. Molly attended our fathers funeral services & sent flowers & she still communicates with us today. This will be my last update, as my mom passed away about 10 days ago in the memory care unit of Aegis. Crazy that its been 2 1/2 years since my parents moved into Aegis in March of 2019. My dad passed away in November of 2019, and my mom was moved into memory care about a year ago. As it was during the pandemic, the staff at Aegis did all the work moving my mom into her new room; hanging her pictures and photographs, arranging her clothes, etc, that made things much easier for me. All in all, i couldn't be happier that we chose Aegis; the building is beautiful and well kept, the staff is friendly, attentive, knowledgeable, and experienced, and the other residents are outgoing and sociable. i had a lot of laughs and fun with my parents over the last 2 1/2 years, and i'll miss going over there and seeing all their friends. Hopefully when the pandemic is finally over they'll let me be a guest bingo caller every so often... Thank you to everyone at Aegis, you know who you are! read more

My folks moved to Aegis when Dad was dying of pancreatic cancer, and Mom had Alzheimer's. They enjoyed the many activities there, and I liked spending time with them in the courtyard when I would visit. The "cafe" is a nice touch, and it's no wonder my mom often confused it with being in a hotel. Though underused by the residents, the library was another space we enjoyed when the weather didn't permit outdoor lounging. The staff there is great. They were always respectful, friendly, helpful, and caring. I never had anything but pleasant experiences with them. I felt my folks were in good hands when they were there. Finding an assisted living facility for one's parents can be challenging, and being comfortable with the choice makes the process easier. I would recommend Aegis of Moraga to anyone in that situation. read more

My brother and I worked with Steve Villa to find the best assisted living/memory care for our 86 year old Mom. She already had live-in help 24/7 but she got COVID-19 and her cognition never returned to baseline. Her home was no longer safe and we respected her previously stated wishes to live in assisted living rather than with one of her children. We toured 3 or 4 facilities in East Bay but picking Aegis was easy. Molly is great, the building is in very nice condition and Tammy Jo of Clear Organizing made the move so easy. As others have mentioned, we can only visit for 30 minutes through plexiglass, but their attention to safety during a pandemic is very much appreciated. Looking forward to getting to know the staff once we are all vaccinated. We whole heartedly recommend Aegis Moraga for all of you looking for a superb new home for your parent! read more

I was referred to Molly at Aegis in June of 2017, when I became the federal fiduciary for my then 89-year old grandmother. Molly was wonderful to work with, and has continued to be for the past 3.5 years, even taking my calls on her cell phone occasionally regardless of day of the week. And her weekly floral arrangements in the lobby are amazing. The new GM, Bill, is a wonderful upgrade to the prior GM, Candice, who was a challenge for me. Bill is genuinely caring and empathetic, and was super helpful. Post-COVID I hope to meet him to thank him personally. Won in accounting is responsive, although I admit the Aegis bills require an abacus to understand them (Molly tells me that Aegis is currently rolling out a much needed simplified billing system). The nursing team was always responsive, although I admit my blood pressure would increase any time I would get a call from them, as it generally indicated that my grandmother's care requirements, and associated care costs, were evolving. That said, the team was always reasonable in their care plan evaluations, and responsive if I took exception to an increase in care costs that I didn't understand. The activity calendar prior to COVID was robust, and the activities director would invite my grandmother daily to bingo. The Easter, Mother's Day, July 4th, Thanksgiving, and Christmas events they host for residents and their families prior to COVID were always well received, as were the live musicians and other artists they used to rotate through. It was nice to receive a monthly email with a picture of my grandmother participating in some activity, which I was able to just forward on to family. The dining room, which prior to COVID served breakfast, lunch, dinner and meal options in between, was also well run. Tablecloths, wine service, rotating daily specials, and we could join any meal service to dine with her. They also have a private dining room you can reserve for a family event. I'm in the hospitality industry, so I'm not their easiest customer, and it gave me pride to know that my dearest Gran was able to experience Aegis Assisted Living Moraga for 3.5 years. Aegis Living Moraga - Assisted Living Facilities Near Me - Moraga, California

Since I don't normally do reviews, I read several of the previous reviews to determine if my input would be worthwhile. I don't like wasting anyone's time, nor do I appreciate slanted opinions offered by people who are never satisfied. That being said, I noticed several negative reviews which upon examination were started years ago. So, note that my review is for current conditions, including the pandemic we are experiencing. To those people with the negative comments, I must say that assisted care is expensive and it does involve a significant number of psychological hurdles to be overcome, both for the aged person and the family members. It is a difficult situation to maneuver that is a part of our today's world. It is reality. If you haven't prepared for it, financially or psychologically, it is your issue and you need to own it. The comment made about profitability and caregiving is short-sighted. Aegis is NOT a non-profit. Nor, are they a hospital. They clearly state this when you interview with them to determine if you want their services. It is also not a Michelin starred dining experience. So, what is the draw? My mother is there. She is happy as hell. She likes all the people who work there, and those visiting her are always treated with respect. It is clean, organized, and the staff is personable. The room is adequate and doesn't exceed her needs, but is light, air-conditioned, and the bathroom has all the required elderly fixtures. It is very livable at Aegis. At this point, I feel it is important to point out that my mother is a positive, realistic person who sees the good in things. Her attitude makes her life and surroundings more than palatable....she makes the people who are there WANT to help her. When people enter a place like Aegis with a sour mentality, of course it is going to be difficult. Add the expense of it, and you have the mixture to initiate negativity like I read in the poor reviews. I think those people need to first determine if their expectations are realistic. Aegis of Moraga is a good place for those people who need assistance in their final stage of life. It is as good as you want to make it. All kinds of activities to keep the residents active, outings, food service, help with meds, bathing, etc....all in a good location and beautiful surroundings. Maybe it isn't for everyone, So do you due diligence. They provide you with enough documentation that you can understand the fees before you commit. And, I've found, if you have a question or need help with something, Aegis management is responsive and willing to help. They are very sensitive to our loved one, and I'm sure they are to others. Aegis of Moraga is a good place for my mother because she is really happy there......in her final days, isn't that the most valuable thing we can offer her? read more

In response to Tom Laborde: That sounds great and seems to be the standard marketing spiel but, at least at Moraga Aegis, that is not the reality. The staff that work directly with the residents don't seem to have much training or experience at all. I have yet to hear any specifics on the behavioral/dementia training these individuals have. To add insult to injury, we were also charged an additional month ($10k+) even though my father ended up in the hospital and could not be released back to Aegis due to his poor condition and inadequate care. Aegis of Moraga has been a safe and welcoming home for my father since 2018. My family is very grateful for the attentive staff and the warm and nurturing environment. When we first toured facilities, I was impressed with not only the friendly staff but the clean and beautiful living spaces. My father's room in the memory care unit is spacious, with natural light, a window that looks out at lovely trees, generous closet space, and a clean bathroom. When the weather is nice, he enjoys the quiet garden outside the memory care wing.  What I really appreciate is Aegis strives to create a strong community feel, with in-person events and celebrations (pre-COVID). During the pandemic, they have adhered to strict health and safety guidelines and transparent communications with family members, which gives me peace of mind that my father is safe and well cared for. The nursing staff has been prompt with updates to my father's care plan and medication needs. My billing inquiries are also addressed promptly. Finally, I am SUPER thankful that my dad (and most of the residents & staff) were vaccinated recently -- a huge accomplishment that brings me tremendous joy! It became evident in June that my mother, age 100, needed full-time care beyond what her home caregiver had been able to provide. After having an interview with the marketing director, Molly Gleason-Kodama, and a mini-tour (due to COVID-19), there was no question in my mind that this was where she would be most happy. We were pleased that a sunny, corner 1 bedroom apartment became available, and she moved in mid-July. Her 'home' looked absolutely lovely, having been moved and staged by the fantastic group Clear Organizing, recommended by Molly. She, unfortunately, due to pandemic restrictions, had to be in quarantine for 14 days upon arriving, and after that time she could only have visitors by appointment through plexiglass near the entrance. This was extremely difficult considering her hearing problem and was very distressful for her and us. She began to decline after a few weeks and passed away on August 22 at age 100 and 8 months. We knew this was a possibility due to her advanced age and her stress worrying about the virus and in no way reflects upon Aegis. The staff was extremely helpful from the beginning to the end. I cannot give enough praise to Molly as she gave over-the-top consideration to all of the family members and friends. She is discreet, friendly, outgoing, extremely available for discussions, and exactly what one would want in this type of facility. Lorena, Noel, Gabby, and many others were kind and helpful. My father has been in memory care at Aegis Moraga for over three months now, and after many visits to Aegis by our family, we remain as thrilled with his new home as we were when we chose it, after touring multiple in the area. Though my dad is consistently confused about where he is, he is just as consistent in telling us he loves it there, how clean everything is, how nice the staff is, and how he likes the food. Over 35 years ago I worked as a CNA in a nursing home, and am an oncology physician now, so I have spent a lifetime caring for geriatric patients, many with dementia, and understand the day-to-day challenges. With that background, I've been impressed with the respectfulness of Aegis staff in dealing with the elders. Dementia can be so frustrating, and keeping everyone safe a serious undertaking. I've come to know so many of the characters in my dad's unit, and enjoy watching how the staff works with each of their unique needs and quirky personalities (quiet/talkative, mobile/not, hoarder/give-away-er, grouchy/sunny... it's quite a cast). Aegis has been great at transparency and communicating! Up front we got cards, emails, cell numbers and honest entreaties to use them. We receive calls quickly about any changes, problems, or drama. I check in with Molly at every visit, and she has become my touchstone there. She serves as more than her marketing director title, being in-house social support and decompression for stressed families, not just mine. I wanted to write this heartfelt review to give my highest regard to Aegis of Moraga and its staff. It all starts with Molly, a fantastic asset and true saint. I was concerned and disheartened to think that my mom would have to move into assisted living. That all changed after finding Aegis of Moraga through a referral from a friend. Molly was so helpful and made me feel comfortable about the prospect of making this monumental decision regarding my mom's future. Molly is passionate, compassionate, and knowledgeable beyond belief, and she has a degree in Gerontology, which was very important to me. Once we decided that Aegis was the place for my mom, Molly referred me to Tammyjo Boroskay with Clear Organizing after telling her that I had no idea where to start on what to bring to Aegis for my mom. We were able to coordinate an outing for my mom to correspond with her moving into Aegis. In the interim, Tammyjo facilitated moving my mom's personal belongings to Aegis, so when she arrived, everything was set up and ready to go. This worked exceptionally well as it made my mom feel comfortable having her belongings around her as soon as she arrived at her new home. My mother had a relatively smooth transition, but it got even better when Molly referred us to Dr. Michelle Dhanak, a geriatric specialist that makes personal visits to Aegis monthly. When Dr. Dhanak is with my mom, she uses facetime with me and reports back to me after each visit. She says how happy my mom is and how well she is taken care of at Aegis. My mom has now been at Aegis for almost two years, and with the pandemic, I have felt secure that she is in a safe well cared for environment. The staff has been incredibly communicative when my mom needs items sent to her. My brother and I feel so blessed and happy that Aegis of Moraga is there for our family. My mother, who recently passed away, was a resident of Aegis Moraga for almost 2 years. I wanted to say we had a great experience there. She was formerly at Atria in Walnut Creek (near Rossmoor) and we moved her to Aegis primarily to be closer to us, but it turned out to be a better fit. Atria is really spread out and it was a long walk for staff to her apartment, so we felt they were not checking on her as much as we would like. Aegis is much more compact with a central nurses station so it was easy for staff to check on her. They were very accommodating to her changing needs. As she became more and more bed-bound, Aegis changed their policy on the emergency call buttons so that she could use it to summon non-emergency help. We did question some of what staff did, and they either explained why they do things their way or tried to accommodate us. In the end, this isn't their first rodeo and they do know what they are doing. As for the 1 star below, all I can say is that I left cash around there for my mom's piece of mind and it never disappeared. My mom had dementia and was always accusing the staff, at both places, of stealing her stuff but we always found it somewhere in her room. More like she just forgot where she put things and needed to blame someone as she lost control of her life. My mom was actually in about 4 different places over the years and they can all be a bit cliquey. But we found the residents at Aegis to be friendly and welcoming, all things considered. One thing I did like about Aegis is that being compact, there is no need for a mobility scooter (which was a necessity at Atria). They are evil devices and my mom's health deteriorated the more she relied on it. Don't get one. Food was good and the chefs were very accommodating to her needs. Yes, the place is for profit and it's expensive. But we looked at darn near every facility in the area, including Oakland, and on balance chose Aegis. Trust me, my mom has unusually high standards and is not above complaining. This review is long over due! The entire team at Aegis in Moraga is caring, considerate and cheerful. They have gracefully helped her move within the community three times from Assisted Living in a studio, then to a 1 bedroom apartment and now into Life's Neighborhood (memory care). All along the way we have received honest feedback about my mom's needs as her physical and mental health continues to decline. Thanks to Bill the Manager for demonstrating positive leadership. Thanks to Molly the Marketing Director who has deftly helped us with the moves and quickly responded to our concerns. The Covid precautions have been strictly enforced and the residents have stayed safe! Sadly that means a great degree of isolation which has been very challenging. Aegis Moraga went above and beyond to help celebrate my father's birthday. Molly connected me to Bay Area musician Carlos Reyes to play for my father in celebration of his birthday. She confirmed Carlos' performance within a half-hour! Carlos performed safely behind plexi-glass in the area Aegis has set up for family visits during COVID-19. Despite Alzheimer's, Dad truly connected with Carlos' joyful music. A local family member was able to record the event, so our entire family could celebrate Dad and enjoy the performance. We visited Aegis Moraga on more than one occasion. We were even offered to have dinner, which was delicious. The residence were proactive in engaging and welcoming my mom. Even though my mom's budget didn't align, the marketing director, Molly, selflessly went out of our way to help us and we eventually found something that worked. I would suggest a visit to Aegis Moraga if you're searching. It's a lovely community with a team of people that truly care about what's best for the individual and their family. Aegis of Moraga has been amazing, providing conscientious care for my mother over the past year. When it became impossible to provide safe care at home, Mollie helped us move mom into her lovely room in memory care. She moved mountains to get her safe quickly, even buying towels in mom's favorite color. Without exception, the caregivers are warm & infinitely patient, gently distracting mom when she is anxious, knowing her preferences, even when she can't express herself. The food is wonderful. The activities staff are creative and engaging. The nursing staff can always report details about how mom is doing, and have been so helpful with medical appointments and problem solving the inevitable health challenges that arise. Without exception, every person has been welcoming to our entire family. Words are inadequate to describe how grateful I am, being able to know mom is safe & engaged when I can't be with her. read more

My dad moved to Aegis Moraga (from Sunrise in Oakland Hills) last summer, and the staff (and especially Molly and Ric) has been excellent in very trying circumstances. First off, Molly assisted us with the move-in and was very reassuring to my dad, who was a bit nervous handing over his medications to people he didn't know. Ric, the director, was readily available to answer all of my questions and gave me a ride back to my car at the drop of a hat. What a great guy. Then, over the past year, they've all been very communicative during numerous changes in policy related to the pandemic. They communicated consistently the latest information they had about outbreaks (which really were minimal, all things considered) and any changes to visitation policies were handled delicately but clearly. Molly and the staff take pleasure in meeting the residents and get to know them all by name, and while residents couldn't always eat every meal in the cafeteria, staff made sure to check in on them several times a day just to see how they were doing. The staff really enjoyed that my dad had moved there with his woman-friend of many years and liked to see them eating meals together. I'm moving my dad to Chico, CA now so that I can be ten minutes from him instead of three hours. But there's no question that I'd keep him in Aegis Moraga if I lived closer to him. UPDATE: (9.2015) Janssen Malloy LLP is investigating Aegis of Moraga as part of a potential class-action lawsuit concerning staffing/billing discrepancies. One of my biggest issues​ was getting charged for services​ not provided or not needed. When confronted they could not justify the charges and were unwilling to remove them. They also charge $8,000 (not a typo) deposit. (What could cost $8,000 when someone moves out?) That's 2x or 3x more than​ similar facilities. Be aware that they have a VERY high turnover rate with there staff which directly relates to the high turnover in there occupancy (weird if this is such a wonderful place) This is something to consider being when your loved one gets​ older is hard for them to see a new unfamiliar face each time they need their med's or need anything else. Many reviews talk about how beautiful the facility is which is true BUT in hindsight that had little value to my loved one. If you are considering Aegis vs. another facility make sure you ask if the other A.L. facility has any residents that moved from Aegis and ask to speak to one of there family members to find out why.... that might make your decision much easier. Bottom line Aegis is run like a large corporation (which it is) and you pay a lot for services that can be provided at other A.L. facilities for much less. I moved my loved one out because of the above issues and I wanted my loved one to feel cared for like they were living at a friend's house, which Aegis just couldn't provide. This place deserves 10 stars!! My mother, father and I looked at senior living places all over the Bay Area and Contra Costa County and we chose Aegis in Moraga because it has everything! They have one bedroom and studio apartments that have beautiful outlooks, gas fireplace, spacious rooms, large bathrooms, kitchenettes, and lovely archways in between the kitchen and living rooms. The apartments feel very homey and nice. There is a large beautiful community sitting area, that opens out to gorgeous gardens and water fountain with sunny and shady sitting areas. They have a library, a salon for haircuts, perms and mani/pedi's, a private dining room for family celebrations and a big, charming community dining area. They have other rooms for exercise, yoga, projects, movies and more. The town of Moraga is so quaint with good shops and friendly people. They also have a wonderful memory care unit with private bedrooms and an amazing and friendly staff. My favorite part about this place is that it feels like home. Everyone, staff included is like a huge family! Call and ask for Molly, she is FANTASTIC!! My mom is now in the memory care unit. It is a very emotional process, but my mom is so happy there and I wouldn't want her anywhere else! Molly has tons of resources to help you along the way. Hope this helps! read more

This is my 2nd experience with Aegis Living. My father lived in Aegis of Aptos, and my family and I were extremely happy with the care he received there. When my father-in-law in the East Bay was moving to assisted living, I strongly recommended Aegis in Moraga. He moved there recently and they have not let me down! The staff are sweet and always calm, and the response time to an alert is very satisfactory. He needs a lot of care, and we have been very happy with their professionalism and personal touch. My family and I are very hands-on and visit frequently. Aegis managers have been always helpful - from move-in to daily care accommodations. I feel, as I did in Aptos, that the staff are on my team, taking excellent care of someone I love very much. read more

My Mom has been living at Aegis Moraga for about two-and-a-half years now in their memory care wing. She is very happy there and I feel happy knowing that she is safe, well cared for and loves her room! They have a plexiglass visitation area and I can book an appointment and go visit with her. I miss not being able to give her a hug BUT I rest assured knowing that she is safe and has had both of her vaccines. The people there really care about her and she knows it. They have a lot of experience working with dementia and the nurses, care staff and most everyone has worked there for a long time (I think that is a real rarity in that industry). Aegis is a well-run company and I believe it takes good care of its employees; that is reflected in the care that my mother receives. I cannot imagine having my mom anywhere else during this difficult COVID time. AegisLiving Moraga is a lifesaver. My husband has been at Aegis Living Moraga for one year. He was eased into the routine of living in memory care by perfectly coordinated planning and I, relinquishing him, was prepared by sensitive staff who guided me through the first moments of his adjustment. I have felt confident since that day about the care he has received. Because he moved in in November, he benefited from the superb activities program which was central to daily life before Covid restrictions were set in place. I cannot express adequately how grateful I was to hear my husband's frequent comments about how wonderful everybody was and he referred to all of the people he was connected to: Administration, caregivers, the residents he met who'd become his social world - he was frankly happy. It was evident he was at ease and comfortable. My husband has had dementia for nearly ten years and his days were becoming vacant, so to observe how pleased he was to participate and to finally have some meaning restored to each day meant everything to me. He was lucky to be able to appreciate, still, and he frequently mentioned how good he felt and how lovely the environment is. He was obviously delighted with the food, since I'd hear reports of his frequent requests for second helpings. When the pandemic arrived and upended the rhythm and opportunities of each day, everyone stepped in to make the transition for residents and their families as smooth as possible. It has been an impressive endeavor, with the most successful outcomes possible under the circumstances. The staff has had safety training and oversight and the residents have been kept comfortable, protected, and as anxiety-free as possible, at all times. The staff remained flexible and learned and innovated as they dealt with the roller-coaster of changes: State mandates, families' requests, and residents' adjustments to confinement. They have been as accommodating as possible, always aware of the pain family members and friends must feel not being able to hold, comfort, or just pass time with their loved ones. They have learned new technology themselves and have also taken on the enormous task of working to explain the new and different routines to the memory residents, until they sensed they felt secure and could get some pleasure from this new experience. I will forever remember my husband looking up with trust at Allison or Mike as they helped him respond to a FaceTime call. I have had many chances to see my husband safely during these eleven months, either via FaceTime or through a plexiglass shield, and I owe my thanks to everybody who helped facilitate these visits. Scheduling visits and juggling staff time has to be a Herculean job. The vigilance of the Wellness staff during Covid restrictions - supervising the health of every person in and out of Aegis - has to have been a responsibility unlike anything they could have expected. Everyone who offers kindness and care to my beloved husband fills my heart with gratitude. I know each one is constantly adapting to the changes that any Alzheimer's sufferer will go through. The work they do is an enormous job and I have only seen them be unrushed and gentle. I know that approach comes from Lorena's leadership and training of the care staff, which she reinforces frequently, and it succeeds: The staff acts as a caring family, allowing actual family to have the confidence that any suggestions, questions or concerns of theirs will always be heard and addressed. I'd like to mention people specifically. Bill, the manager, is cordial and approachable and has kept us up to date with regular honest communication and a professional, reassuring tone during the quarantine; Molly, a friend forever, with her sincere guidance, personal interest and artistic contributions; Lorena, whose ear is always open to concerns and who attends to those concerns immediately, and whose experience is tuned to offering the finest of care to those in her trust; Tender-hearted Tina, who is always working with enthusiasm, creativity and energy - she must spend every spare hour innovating ways to engage memory care residents; Gabby, who with kindness, takes care of everything with competence, coordinating every schedule as well as every unexpected task; Blanca, who pulled off the great coup of providing the vaccines quickly, as well as all the nurses; mostly, the dear caregivers, whom my husband can turn to and whom I rely on with fond gratitude. My Grandmother has lived at Aegis Care Home now over 3 years. She has always had an elegant, comfortable home and Aegis Moraga is just that. My mother was struggling with Alzheimer's and needed to find the best place for her. So, I found a perfect care facility for her at Aegis of Moraga. Let's be honest, looking for a special spot for your parent is so important. My mom lived there almost a year before she passed away from a long journey of Alzheimer's. Then my dad started having similar concerns that my mother had too. Lucky for me, Aegis took great care of my mother and my father already had spent so much time visiting her there it was the best place for him. My dad started out in the Assisted living area on the second floor but now resides in the memory care wing. Throughout my journey Molly, the amazing Marketing director has been very involved. She helped me so much from arranging the entire move for my Dad from home with professional organizers and guided him and us through the process to help make him settled in and comfortable. When things have been tough for my father, Bill, the director has even stepped in and provided the extra personal touch to assisting me with my father. Knowing that I can track my father on my app on my phone has been a great way to see how he is doing especially since I live out of state. I am much more at peace knowing that he is in a safe and caring place with so many kind staff members. The staff is always very helpful and calm with the residents. I can highly recommend Aegis of Moraga to any family who needs assisted living or memory care for their loved ones. My father died in Aegis of Moraga but it was the best experience of passing I could imagine. He started out in another assisted living facility in Oakland which was TERRIBLE. When we were struggling to decide what to do and where he should move, Molly from marketing looked me in the eye and said, "They don't care about him there (at the other facility). Bring him here and we will look after him." It was the best decision I could have made for dad. He wasn't at Aegis very long (3 1/2 months) but he was made to feel like family from the very beginning. Molly would say when we approached her with an issue, "You are NEVER bothering me." After dad moved in, Ric, the director, was always available to help with any issues which arose with his care. Someone from our large, extended family was visiting him nearly every day and we all saw first hand how everyone (from the housekeepers to the laundry guy to the medical techs to the caregivers) took a personal interest in his comfort. No one ever rushed and, before they left the room, they always asked, "Is there anything else I can do for you or that you need?" Blanca, the facility nurse, was on top of his medications and seeing that he got all the help he needed. I got a call every time there was a change in his status. He was on Hospice as he declined and the Aegis staff coordinated nearly seamlessly with Suncrest Hospice (which was also wonderful, by the way). It is sad to have to say goodbye to dad but the experiences of his last days were filled with caring, compassionate caregivers who kept him safe and as comfortable as possible. I could leave each time I visited knowing everything would be ok while I was gone and that, if something did happen, he would have all the help he needed until I could return. Mom has been at Aegis in Moraga now for almost 4 years. We have had a good experience at Moraga over that time frame. The last year has been quite different. While it is a hard at times to maintain "safe distance" from Mom the tradeoff was been worthwhile. From March, Aegis has been very proactive in making sure it was doing all if could to protect its residents and staff while being creative to allow some engagement, while distanced, with residents. This has resulted in, to my knowledge, only one resident getting Covid. While I was reading terrible stories about mass infections and deaths at many other assisted living facilities I had the piece of mind knowing mom was as safe as possible. They were also proactive in getting residents and staff vaccinated and I believe by the end of this month almost all of the residents and staff will have received 2 vaccinations. While looking forward to having more engagement with my Mom I can look back and be thankful that she was weathered 2020 in good hands at Aegis. read more

I believe few consistently provide this as their highest value. A family member moved to Aegis in Moraga just before COVID and the subsequent lockdown of the facility. My mom is 85 and lived alone with her dog until she needed a triple bypass in October 2019. After two weeks in skilled nursing, her cardiac surgeon wanted her to go to an assisted living facility for a "respite" stay to finish recovering. My mom had also been diagnosed with early stage dementia. Post surgery, it became clear she could not live alone anymore. However, she was not ready for memory care. I am thankful every day that my mom is a resident at Aegis of Moraga. I am grateful to all the staff that care for the residents and treat them like their own family. It is in a beautiful location, is spacious with high ceilings and art on the walls. It feels more like a grand hotel than assisted living (you can see that from the pictures online). There are spacious outdoor "gardens", even for the memory care residents. For residents with dementia that do not need memory care, the front doors will prevent them from wandering out while letting them have full access to the facility, all the activities and the spacious back garden (complete with fountain and wisteria). Aegis is also pet friendly! I have been particularly impressed with how seriously they took the COVID-19 outbreak, even in the very early stages. Before California went on lockdown, Aegis started taking precautions. They implemented special cleanings of surfaces during the day. When visitors checked in, they had to answer questions about their travel. Once it became clear that congregate care facilities and seniors were particularly at risk, Aegis stopped allowing visitors. All staff wear masks and gloves and are screened before their shift. All residents are screened daily for not only temperature but blood pressure and oxygen levels. Meals are brought to their rooms. In the beginning, residents were not allowed out of their rooms as they wanted to be sure no one was infected. Now, residents are allowed to go to the garden wearing masks and must physically distance. For more details, read on.... What has impressed me the most is the care that all the teams put into the residents' life at Aegis. The caregivers are all kind and attentive. My mom adores them and always praises how patient they are. Before COVID-19, I visited my mom daily and often interacted with the custodians and maintenance staff. They were always friendly, happy, took time to get to know my mom (and me) and were willing to help in any way. Everyone stopped to pet my mom's dog when I brought her. Pre-Covid, there were always activities, concerts (I went to several concerts and they were very good!) and a nightly movie. Activities staff would check with my mom about what she would want to participate in and encouraged her to get out of her room. I would get monthly updates about her participation. Now, during our shelter in place order, they tape and stream concerts on their own You Tube channel for residents. They provide tablets, if needed, so residents can watch and so they can video call family members. They check with my mom each morning with an activity packet. I have been incredibly impressed with their attention to not only the residents' physical health but also their need for physical activity and mental stimulation. I FaceTime my mom every day so, she gives me regular updates on how well they are taking care of her and keeping her busy. I want my mom to have healthy food. Sal, the chef, and his team are outstanding! I never expected menu options like Pork Remoulade, Chicken Cordon Blue or old fashioned Pot Roast. Sal uses fresh and seasonal produce, no added salt and they make all the soups themselves. There are also more standard options such as burgers and sandwiches. There are always several options at each meal and the dining room is, once again, like a grand hotel (they decorate for all holidays). I had excess lemons on my tree this spring. I gave them to Sal and he told me he made fresh lemonade for the residents. Before COVID-19, there would be snack and drink options in the "living room". There was a bread machine out there as well and I would frequently smell fresh baked bread. Since my mom has early dementia, I am interested in the memory care. From the primary garden, I could see they had their own "back yards" complete with a car they could wash, a bench on which to wait for the bus and a mail box. Frequently, I would be at Aegis when the memory care residents were being led to the activities room so, I knew they were not shut away. One time, I came when Molly, Marketing Director, was making "memory boards" to put outside each memory care resident's room. It was a scrapbook style page (complete with 3D stickers and photos) that gave insight to the resident's history! She took me back to see the other ones she had done so, I was able to see the memory care area. It was charming! It was decorated like a country house and felt comfortable, not institutional. They too are treated like family. read more

My experience with her over the past several years has been remarkable. From the earliest conversations she and I had about what is involved with moving a loved one from home to assisted living through to the move-in of my mom, Molly has been a wonderful, warm, calming, helpful, all-around extraordinary resource. She truly cares and comes from a position of significant education and experience with respect to gerontology and dementia.
