As tour busing goes, the most important thing is the tour guide. It's his or her knowledge and expertise that you're really paying for. With Carlos of E & B Tours, I really lucked out. He was one of the best, most charming, friendly and knowledgeable tour guides ever, and a darn good tour van driver to boot. I took the E & B Tour of the El Yunque Rainforest located in Luquillo, Puerto Rico, and couldn't have been more delighted. I've visited plenty of rainforests and have even lived in one outside of Manaus, Brazil, for about 6 months and know that though they are all called rainforests, there are no two alike. Carlos seemed to have a knowledge of everything about El Yunque, the name and type of every plant, flower, animal, bird and even the medicinal, food uses or habitats of each. If on my own, even with my extensive knowledge of rainforests, I would have pretty much missed out on everything of importance and wouldn't have had a clue of what I was looking at. So, as far as tours go, E & B Tours, especially with Carlos as a tour guide is a definite Five Stars; as good as it gets.

Great time! Highly recommend it!…read more It was every bit as good as their website and yelp reviews made it look. If you're in PR and physically-fit enough to climb the trails, this is a must-see! I read the other reviews here, but I have some more to add. First of all, our driver was exactly on-time (unlike others who were surprised by early arrivals). Can't beat punctuality! We had to make several stops (obviously, we had purchased the package that included transportation from one of the San Juan hotels). But it wasn't bad and the ride from the beach to the park was 45 minutes, including stops at two other hotels. Once there, you'll get to use the restrooms (bano's) if you want before being directed down to a trailer to sign a waiver and pay (if you didn't bother to pay in advance.) Compared to what I paid for the in-advance-internet price, the walk-up rate was $7/person more. There was some more waiting around before getting fitted for a harness and then some MORE as we waited for a large enough group to assemble before heading down the trail. I really want to stress this part, as there were several older guests in the group and they struggled with the trails. At the beginning, you descend some ragged/un-improved trails down to the first line. There WERE some thin ropes to show you the trail and I guess you could hold them, although I think if you really put your weight on them, the poles would have just fallen over. There were a lot of loose rocks and dirt, but eventually everyone got down the trail to the briefing area. I don't think my mom, or anyone not "sure-of-foot" would have made this descent... There was a briefing given in both Spanish and English and they made the final adjustments to our harnesses (which had been left loose to allow us to hike down the trail). About photos: I REALLY appreciated that they weren't trying to squeeze more money out of us at every turn with compulsory pictures or "add-ons". Hell, they don't even sell souvenirs, so if you're thinking of getting a memento, you can forget about it. So, better bring a camera that is either small enough to go in your (zippered/buttoned) pants pocket, or you had better have one that has a strap to put around your neck. YOU WILL NOT be taking pictures while ziplining!!!!! You MUST wear heavy raw-hide gloves on both hands throughout the trip, although there are someplaces where you can step aside and remove your gloves to snap a picture or quick video. The alternative is a "Go-Pro" or other helmet-mounted camera. The helmets they make you wear have places to connect your Go-Pro straps. DO NOT be like the jackass in front of us who thought he could ignore the safety instructions and take his hands off the harness and line. He immediately flipped upside down and easily could have dropped his equipment or injured himself. Use a helmet-cam or take pictures when safely stopped. 'nuf said! As mentioned in other reviews, there is NO PLACE to securely store your valuables, so don't bring any! If you don't have a zippered pocket or pouch that you can put around your neck, just leave stuff at home/hotel/car. And now the staff: They couldn't have been any nicer! What a great group of young people. There is staff at EVERY point in your journey. There's at least one person (highly trained) at EVERY platform, at the beginning and the end. And of course, back at the base station to help you with your equipment. Most are completely bi-lingual, but a few aren't fluent enough to carry-on a casual conversation. Even those folks spoke enough English to guide you thru safety procedures or changing from one line to another. Seriously, nothing but praise for these men and women. They were great. We put a $20 in the tip-box to thank them. Bottom line, we've ridden a number of (much) smaller ziplines, but nothing like this. 8 lines!!!! Awesome views, easy procedures, friendly staff! Loved it! We would do this again on a future trip.

He picked us & another couple up at the hotel and the trip was about 20-25 min to get there. He even met our Beyonce playlist requests :) haha! There were 8 lines and the staff was great. I think this is a good spot for first timers. It's not overwhelming, but still high up with beautiful views. It was also cool because we stopped at a butterfly/tropical bird garden on our way before we hiked down (only 10 min hike) to the zip lines. We got some beautiful pictures. After we were done Sam recommended a great authentic little food stand that we stopped at on the way back to the hotel. It was so good! Overall, it was worth every penny. Manuel was also awesome, but so was all of the staff that helped really. They really put us at ease and were great with safety. A 9 year old girl was even in our big group and was totally fine. Had a great time!

Island Venture is the one and only ferry that takes the public to and from Caja de Muertos. Only…read moreone ferry sets sail each day. The only other way to get there is by private boat. Launching from La Guancha, the dock was easy to get to and there was plenty of parking. For $28 roundtrip (as of 12/16), it was a value excursion! On this uninhabited island, there are no stores or vendors. Bring your own food, drinks, and beach comfort items. The ferry does sell drinks, some alcoholic beverages, snacks, and food (hot dogs and kebabs). You have to preorder the food in the morning and they'll cook it up fresh while you go play on the island, serving lunch at noon. For $60, you get roundtrip transportation and twelve meal and drink tickets (two tickets for food items, one ticket for snacks and drinks, including beer). The prices onboard are actually quite reasonable, so the meal tickets really aren't that much of a deal, in my opinion. You can also rent beach chairs and snorkeling gear from Island Ventures at very affordable prices. On this gorgeous island, we wanted to do it all! We wanted to hike to the lighthouse, explore the caves, play at the beach...everything! But we somehow couldn't get away from the water. We played at the beach, snorkeled, and then beached again. Snorkeling gear was only ten bucks to rent (as of 12/16), but because I can't swim and needed a life vest, I paid another two bucks for the whole shebang. While we were close to coral along the shore, it wasn't the best snorkeling environment. Not a lot of wildlife around all those human types that lined the shores. There were many fish under the dock, so we carefully explored that area. The water is a brilliant turquoise, but not very clear (it wasn't dirty, it just wasn't crystal clear), so it was often times difficult to see, even from a short distance away. Ferry leaves La Guancha at 8:30 AM on the dot, so get there early to check in and grab a seat. The forty-five minute ride each way is pretty smooth. Ferry leaves the island at 3:30 PM. That's almost six hours on the island! For us, it was just right. A perfect day on a gorgeous island with an attentive ferry staff.

The Island itself is 5 + stars, but one of the only ways to get there (Island Ventures) knocks it down a star. Island Venture Ferry Basics -- $25 per person which includes two drink tickets (can be claimed for Medalla Light, Coors Light, or soda). You can also upgrade your ticket for $10 and get 15 drink tickets (!) --Boat leaves from La Guancha at 8:30am (but you must arrive by 7:40am) and from the island at 3:30 (boards at 3). Ride takes about 45 minutes and has a lower level with shade. --They also sell hot dogs and kebabs and rent umbrellas on the ship and the ship stays docked there so you can continue to purchase drinks/food while you're on the island. Caveats: --The company holds weird hours and are hard to get a hold of, especially if you don't speak Spanish. --Their online booking system can be glitchy, my friend's reservation got mixed up for the wrong day. --Spots book up fast, book early! --They charge a fee for coolers (although we had soft/bag style coolers and were not charged). --We shared the boat with a school trip...so yea, there's that. ISLAND --AWESOME. --Walk up (down? into?) the cave. --Walk up to the lighthouse for some AMAZING views (30 minutes, bring water, we did it in flip flops but prob shouldn't have). --Love life on the beach. Watch out for jellyfish though! --Snorkel! (Not the best I've seen, but still cool). --Admire cacti and wildlife (hermit crabs and lizards everywhere!) During some seasons there are apparently sea turtles nesting! --Pack a picnic and enjoy it on the picnic tables! They also have compost "bathrooms." They smell and don't have soap, but there's TP! --Avoid the small beach to the left of the dock (if you're facing the island)-loaded with bugs! --Perfect day trip and one of my favorite activities from our Puerto Rico trip! We took our time walking through the rivers, looking in caves, kayaking, and hiking. It was a quiet and calm adventure. So beautiful! The tour guide was also awesome! He found unique plants, flowers, bugs, and birds to highlight. The offered a ride to the location, life vests, and helmets. Everything else is up to you to bring- water, snacks. If we come back for vacay we may do this again!

Make sure you bring comfortable walking shoes or trainers because it is a bit of a hike & there are rocky areas/stairs you have to climb through. It can be challenging in spots so you really do need to be ready for uneven terrain. The tour was very informative, especially learning about the bats that live in the caves & the surrounding ecosystem. The guide shared a lot of interesting facts that made the experience engaging & easy to follow. She threw in mad jokes as well. I needed those laughs. We explored multiple caves, not just Cueva Ventana,& each one had its own feel & character, which made the tour even more interesting. Once inside, the views were absolutely stunning. Seeing the ocean framed through the opening of Cueva Ventana was def a highlight, but the other caves added to the sense of adventure & made the whole experience feel like a real exploration. I left feeling like I had gotten a real mix of nature, history, and adventure all in 1 visit. It was worth taking the time & all the walking to see all of it. As a bonus,the tour guide gave me a ripe mamey sapote fruit which I enjoyed @ my Airbnb(b/c I needed to clean & cut it). It tasted somewhat like a mango but less sweet/juicy & more dense. You have to be able to hike up and down really steep steps into and out of the caves- and they are slippery so wear good closed-toe shoes with tread. If you were a hat, you'll have to take it off to wear the hard hat throughout the tour. Most of the experience in the caves had high ceilings- they weren't tight spaces except one little portion of the second cave. If you do this- you must be ok with being in a cave with bats. There are also roaches in cave 2 that are the "janitors" for the bat feces. They don't bother you at all- and it's actually really cool to witness them all in their habitat. The photo opps are great- and the window at the end is beautiful!
