Visiting Cueva Ventana & the other surrounding caves was a really cool experience in Arecibo,PR. It's def something you want to come prepared for. Make sure you bring comfortable walking shoes or trainers because it is a bit of a hike & there are rocky areas/stairs you have to climb through. It can be challenging in spots so you really do need to be ready for uneven terrain. The tour was very informative, especially learning about the bats that live in the caves & the surrounding ecosystem. The guide shared a lot of interesting facts that made the experience engaging & easy to follow. She threw in mad jokes as well. I needed those laughs. We explored multiple caves, not just Cueva Ventana,& each one had its own feel & character, which made the tour even more interesting. Once inside, the views were absolutely stunning. Seeing the ocean framed through the opening of Cueva Ventana was def a highlight, but the other caves added to the sense of adventure & made the whole experience feel like a real exploration. I left feeling like I had gotten a real mix of nature, history, and adventure all in 1 visit. It was worth taking the time & all the walking to see all of it. As a bonus,the tour guide gave me a ripe mamey sapote fruit which I enjoyed @ my Airbnb(b/c I needed to clean & cut it). It tasted somewhat like a mango but less sweet/juicy & more dense. This was a really cool experience! We booked tickets for a group of 9 on the same day, and glad we opted for this experience. Our guide was Maria, and she was so knowledgeable about the caves, plants and wildlife. You have to be able to hike up and down really steep steps into and out of the caves- and they are slippery so wear good closed-toe shoes with tread. If you were a hat, you'll have to take it off to wear the hard hat throughout the tour. Most of the experience in the caves had high ceilings- they weren't tight spaces except one little portion of the second cave. If you do this- you must be ok with being in a cave with bats. There are also roaches in cave 2 that are the "janitors" for the bat feces. They don't bother you at all- and it's actually really cool to witness them all in their habitat. This was one of the highlights to our PR trip! admission process was simple, and after getting our helmets and flashlights, we followed our guide (whom was great btw) through a fascinating cave system filled with bats, rock formations, and ancient Taíno petroglyphs. (Plus one large water bug by the entrance/exit, luckily for me that didn't fly) The short hike was manageable and packed with info about the area's history and wildlife. This was an interesting guided exploration experience. We took a short hike to meet our guides and when we arrived we were given hard hats and some lights for when we arrive at the caves. Our guides explained a few rules such as not to take off your hard hat at any time and when in the cave not to use your flash to take pictures. Also had to be fairly quiet when navigating inside. The last thing you want todo is disturb the bats and have them flying around pooping all over the place lol. There are also alot of roaches. We were also told there are alot of roaches Crawling around but to not be afraid because they dont fly! That was kind of a relief lol. The cave its self is dark in some parts and slightly visible in others. It was a really nice experience to be shown ancient drawings within the cave walls and have the history of the cave itself explained and how people believed they were reincarnated as bats. The tour wasn't long but when we got to the end of it we had a incredible view! We were so high up in the cave and the opening was beautiful. It looked like a portrait if I had to describe it. Kind of place i would go and sit for hours and just meditate in. I enjoyed it and i would love to explore more places like this on my next visit to Puerto Rico. read more

Great tour with Jesus! He is friendly and very knowledgeable about the caves and other facts about Puerto Rico in general. The tour lasted a little over 90 minutes and was given in both English and Spanish. The handrails were well maintained and very useful and necessary in a lot of the areas. Good, sturdy shoes are a must with tread. Some of the steps going down into the cave are steep and one of our group had a bad knee and didn't want to chance the stairs down. This is a fun short outing for the family. We did a private UTV tour with Jesus, and he was so nice! My FIL, hubby and I really wanted to go see the beautiful views here of the Rio Grande Valley of Arecibo. We were ready to get our hard hats on, get some guidance and burn some calories hiking to the first cave. The pre-Columbian Taino petroglyphs would have been a fun site as well as the stalactites and stalagmites. Not sure the bats and caves would be so welcoming, but to be expected in a cave, right? It would have been about a 90 minute tour for us today. I called and checked online and verified with the hotel concierge as well, as it's a over an hour and a half away. They supply hard hats for everyone. best if you wear sneakers, though I did see some girls wearing sandals, it is not recommended and the tour guide can deny you entrance (pretty sure I saw it in their rules). The tour guide provides lots of history throughout the entire trip. There was plenty of opportunity to take pictures and ask questions. Loved visiting this tourist spot. If you are a local you pay a different amount than a tourist. Regardless it is still worth the admission. For the price of admission you get to visit two caves but to be quite honest the second cave is really why you go there. The guides are very knowledgeable and are ready to answer all your questions. I suggest you travel with comfortable footwear because you are walking up and down some tough uneven terrain. Definitely leave the flip flops at home. The guides speak both Spanish and English so you will understand what is going on. Once you get to the second cave you are able to take some amazing pics of the scenery beyond the cave entrance. Looks like price varies by day. I don't know what factors determine the price for the hour/day/week/season. In May of 2016 (rainy season), we paid $17 per person for a short, fully guided tour. This is a fully guided tour for several reasons, I assume. 1) Our safety. As you can see in the photos, we're all given helmets. 2) Preservation of ancient Taino grounds. Nuff' said. 3) Preservation of wildlife and the ecosystem. Having small, guided groups does ensure that we stay together and no trample or vandalize anything. The tour briefed us on the ecosystem of the area and of the island, as well as a bit of history of the Taino people. My group had both locals and tourists, so our guide gave the tour in both Spanish and English. We were taken through two larger caves, including the infamous Window Cave. Taino descendants flanked the entry and exit points of the Window Cave. They were pointed out, for us to go speak to them "later", if we chose to. That was pretty much it. Super short tour. Super small area of coverage. If safety and preservation is the intent, then I understand it, totally! I think...I just hoped to get a bit more out of it; more history, more time, more land to explore...I don't know. I would have loved to just sit there and soak in the view, but of course, they had to keep us moving to start the next tour, understandably. Not worth a repeat visit, but I still highly recommend it for anyone who hasn't done it before. The view with the frame of the cave is truly breathtaking. $20 for non-Puerto Ricans. Park at either the gas station or go up the hill and park in the vast dirt parking lot, but the table to buy the tickets is at the bottom by the gas station. Also beside the table are stairs that pass a bathroom and lead you to where you meet the tour guide and get your helmets. My boyfriend and I got there around 10am on a Sunday. They had us wait about 20 minutes until there were 15 people in our group before we started on the tour. The guy working there told us that it gets busy around 11-12, to a point where there are about 25 people per group The guided part of the tour was boring. You basically walk 15 minutes to and inside the cave with the tour guide before he leaves you be at the window. He spent most of the time speaking Spanish and once in a while translated to English (my boyfriend and I were the only non-Spanish speakers there. At the window cave, the tour guide doesn't let you get very close to the edge even though he most popular photo of Cueva Ventana depicts a man literally standing at the very edge of it. However, he left and a few people walked down to take pictures there anyway. 2 stars because it was an amazing sight. Not more because the tour sucked and was pricey for what you got. read more

I can't express enough how informative and welcoming this tour company was. The caves (of which there are 4) are funded by the government for archaeological research as well as bat research. They are extremely beautiful and well preserved, with carvings on the walls and paintings that date back to ancient societies on the island. I won't spoil the fun (and surprising) facts, but I learned a significant amount regarding those that settled this land over the past thousands of years. They were aware that we were the only people in the group that did not speak English, yet they gave the tour in BOTH Spanish and English and made us feel welcome. The tour itself was about 90 minutes long and included a jungle hike (which was of moderate intensity), travel through two caves, and the fantastic window at the end--with a view that is unlike anything I have ever seen before. Hard hats and flashlights are provided for all tour participants for the trek. There are numerous stops on the way to the window where they discuss the various findings, as well as explanations of animals and other wildlife. While in the cave there was a massive boa-constrictor on the ceiling directly above us. Unfortunately, one woman in our group was frightened and screamed extremely loud while having a panic attack. It was beyond loud and echoing, for those with sensitive ears. Not for the faint of heart. The window itself had some damage from the recent hurricanes and we were not able to walk close to the edge, as opposed to previous tours. The view was still amazing and photography with an iPhoneX was incredibly clear and vibrant. The view is great on either a rainy or sunny day. Be careful when hiking and make sure to wear tennis shoes or sandals with good grip! This is a must! For $17, this was the highlight of our trip to PR. We are wildlife and adventure enthusiasts and our experience was once in a lifetime. Compared to other cave hikes we have experienced, this was superb. For reference it is in same parking lot as gas station and you drive up the hill to the top. The entrance fee of $19 per person was steep compared to the cueva del indio at $5. The hike was not strenuous by any means and very easy. I would have preferred to be at our own pace and not the show. The helmets were a little overkill. They are not necessary. The cave is dark and if not paying attention you may hit your head. Not very likely. Juan was our tour guide and delightful. Very nice guy and caring for those on the tour. Cueva Ventana provides you a really great, beautiful view of the surrounding valley. Just an FYI, it's located in an unexpected location. The entrance is right off a gas station and it's super easy to miss. We missed it on our way there, and had to drive probably 7-8 miles before there was a place to turn around and come back the opposite way. The entrance is $10 + tax per person, so $10.70 total per person. When there's a group that's big enough, you leave with a guide (which isn't usually a problem, my boyfriend and I were the first people there around 10:30 am, and then another group of 3 joined 5 minutes later so then we left). We had a really good guide who pointed out many things in the cave and along the way, i.e. bats, snakes, cockroaches (don't worry -- you don't have to get close if you don't want to, and it really depends on the time of day if they are out and about). He also spent some time discussing the history of the cave and the surrounding region. The hike itself is really not strenuous, perhaps 15 minutes of very leisurely walking on a dirt trail, plus maybe 30-40 minutes of again, very leisurely walking throughout the cave. The end of the tour is Cueva Ventana, which, as the name implies, is basically when the cave forms a window overlook to the surrounding valley. What a gorgeous view with the river, luscious green landscape, etc. You are provided as much time as you like to take pictures, explore around, etc. Afterwards, you are given the option to explore Cueva de la Luz, which was basically a small adjacent cave, not really too much to see there. The route back is the same as the way there. Overall, had a great, relaxing experience here at Cueva Ventana! read more

It was an informative tour, I'll warn you that you have to be ready to do some climbing so wear comfortable shoes that won't slip. My sister and I almost brought our Mom here and we were so glad we didn't she couldn't have done the climbing. If your claustrophobic it also may be an issue for you. I admit I had a moment in the dark being surrounded by the other tourists and I felt I had to get out of the cave quickly. It was definitely a little adventure.
