I can summarize my review of Mr. Lal in five words; this guy is a quack. I will refrain from referring to him as a doctor as he has not earned that title with me. I first met with Mr. Lal for a vitiligo study back in 2023. My first visit was an absolute disorganized mess. I reported to the address I was given, but the receptionist had no idea who I was, who Mr. Lal was, or even vaguely familiar of a vitiligo study that was literally happening in that office. It turns out Mr. Lal was using a back room of affiliated dermatology to conduct this study. I assume he did not have permission. I worked primarily with his two medical assistance, who likely never attended medical school, as they were also the most disorganized "medical professionals" I have ever encountered. Mr. Lal was late to every one of my visits, which were at least weekly, sometimes more frequent. I waited for up to an hour at times, at his mercy, and he never made an apology once. Part of the study required using the Excimer laser to burn off layers of skin in the affected areas. It was obvious Mr. Lal had never used an Eximer before. He literally caused the third-degree burns on my hands. I have had previous experience with the laser, and in trained hands, it is not as destructive as it was in Mr. Lal's hands. I did not complete the study. I drove over two hours every week to be treated by imbeciles who had no business involving themselves in such a complex study. I bailed before the study was complete. I hope it caused a financial loss for Mr. Lal, as he deserves nothing for his incompetence. read more

Affiliated Dermatology in Scottsdale has been incredible for me, and Dr. Lal is truly the best. After a nurse at a medical spa in San Diego burned my face with an IPL treatment, I spent nine months healing from second-degree burns. I was left with hypopigmentation on my cheeks and scarring on my chin and nose. I found Dr. Lal through a recommendation, and he has been the one guiding me through the remediation and healing process. He travels often for speaking engagements and he sees a lot of patients, so there can be a wait, but he is absolutely worth it. He knows exactly what he's doing, explains everything clearly, and will never recommend anything harmful or unnecessary. You can tell he genuinely has your best interest in mind. On top of that, he's funny, personable, and just has a great heart. They have billed my insurance and i have self paid without issue. I do book in advance because i want to keep things on schedule. On a rare occasion they have had to reschedule they have made every effort to accommodate. I rarely wait long to be seen but when there is a delay i don't mind. He is incredibly busy and takes such good care of me and my skin. Its because when he sees a patient he is 100% present and sometimes things take longer than expected. The staff is amazing mianni and yossana are the best medical assistants I have ever met in my entire life and I'm not exaggerating. I've gone to Morgan for injectable's and would highly recommend her. They are definitely the assets. The front desk people are really friendly and do a great job accommodating all the requests. I see Nikki the most and her efficiency - I'm sure its not easy being the main point of contact at such a busy practice but they do a great job The lobby is pleasant and parking is easy. I take the stairs but there is an elevate if mobility is a challenge. If you're looking for a dermatologist or need help with difficult skin issues, I highly recommend getting a consultation with Dr. Lal. read more

Grateful for Thoughtful, Patient-Centered Care I was seen on Thursday, August 7, 2025, at 3:00 PM by Nicole Surman, PA-C, and Christine Lin, M.D. Both providers took the time to truly listen to my concerns and addressed them with care and professionalism. I came in for acne treatment and was prescribed three pregnancy-safe medications, each with clear instructions. One of the prescriptions wasn't covered by my insurance, but the team immediately began the prior authorization process. I called the office on the day of my appointment and again the next day, and they reassured me that they had detailed notes and were actively working on getting approval. They even tried calling my insurance the same day, but unfortunately, the office was closed. Despite that hiccup, I was able to pick up two of my prescriptions the same day, and I'm still waiting on the clindamycin 1% and benzoyl peroxide 5% gel mixture--but I'm hopeful it'll be ready soon. The front desk staff were kind, attentive, and made me feel heard. Nicole was especially thoughtful--when I asked about combining clindamycin and benzoyl peroxide, she didn't dismiss me like my previous provider did. Instead, she looked it up right there and confirmed it was a valid treatment option. She prescribed it along with azelaic acid 15%, and I felt genuinely supported. I used to go to Affiliated Dermatology in Tempe and was seen by Dr. Jonathan Lavian, MD. Unfortunately, that experience was uncomfortable--he didn't listen to my preferences and made me feel dismissed. Nicole was the complete opposite: respectful, curious, and collaborative. I'm so thankful to have found this provider. She helped me feel confident in my treatment plan and cared for as a patient. Thank you to the entire team! ***UPDATE*** I'm so impressed with how quickly Affiliated Dermatology handled the prior authorization for my prescription! My insurance initially didn't cover the clindamycin and benzoyl peroxide 5% gel, which costs over $107--but thanks to their prompt action, it was approved in no time. This is the first negative review I have ever written, and I believe it is important to share my experience to help others make informed decisions. Unfortunately, my experience with Scottsdale Affiliated Dermatology was disappointing. I found that scheduling process was disorganized, wait times were excessively long, staff communication was unprofessional, billing lacked transparency, or the quality of care did not meet expectations. Despite my attempts, I was treated like another number compared to a human being. Contacting the office was not handled in a way that reflected the level of professionalism I expect from a medical practice. Dermatology is a field where patient trust and clear communication are essential, and in my case, I did not feel that standard was met. I did not receive a confirmation for my appointment, so I called the office to verify. After 30 minutes on hold-- including trying the "urgent" option in the phone tree -- I was never able to reach anyone. When I arrived, I learned that while my appointment was on the schedule, no provider had been assigned to it, meaning no one could actually see me. The front desk staff member was as professional and kind as possible while trying to sort out the situation, and I truly appreciate his effort. However, when he contacted the manager, the manager did not have the courtesy to speak with me or even acknowledge me, and simply told him to reschedule my appointment. If you want a band-aid fix and quick fix with medication, come here. If you truly want to heal and find the root cause, go elsewhere. I have come here multiple times for eczema/skin/hives issues and they don't offer any real solutions other than drugs and creams and are not interested or don't know how to help you find the root cause and say it's "just genetics" or "don't know why". I went to a naturopath and functional medicine doctor and got the help I needed and I am on the path to actual healing. Also during one of my visits, one of the PA's I saw barely looked at me and prescribed me a fungal cream for an alleged fungal rash I didn't even actually have. They also have the worst phone system and it takes forever for them to answer the phone or call you back for an appointment. read more

This office is located in the second building of the Grayhawk Medical Plaza. There is an elevator to take going upstairs. Staff are very efficient and helpful. Masks are required for employees and customers in the office and throughout the building. The office has large waiting area with aquarium. A few years ago, the office recently added medical aesthetics to their menu of services. Waiting time is not long unless you come in as a emergency walk in. Bring some reading materials or something to do and time will pass quickly. Clean and quiet waiting area. Shared outdoor parking and free WiFi in the building. read more

I have nothing but nice things to say about the Nurse and Nurse Practitioner that helped me today. However, today I went in for my yearly skin exam and was told at the front desk that it would be a $60 copay. I responded saying that I have a HDHP and don't have a copay and that my visit is preventative. He then responded by saying that they don't bill it that way and preventative is only with primary care. Then I saw the following flyer in the exam room. Please get on the same page and if a patient says it's a covered appointment to not lie and say that you don't bill it as preventative. So I had an appointment with this company today. When I scheduled the appointment, I was given an address I wrote down that address then repeated typed it in my phones calender and repeated it back to the lady on the phone. She said yes mam that's is correct. Well turns out the address was incorrect, she had given me an address in Scottsdale like 14 minutes away from the correct address. I called them and while on hold I drive around looking for the place. I drove 55 minutes out of my way. To get to my appointment then when hey finally get on the phone I told her what happened and what gave me the correct address but by the time I'd get there it's be just out side of the late window. So they would have to reschedule me me. Now I drive like I said 55 minutes to get to the appointment, to not only be taken to the wrong address but then to not even be seen. So I called back to set up another appointment and to speak with corporate to see if there was possibly anything they could do. I was put on hold, matter of fact an still on hold while typing this and it has been 56 minutes and counting and still no one has gotten back to me. I took a screenshot of the call. I have been going to Affiliated Dermatology for at least 3+ years. Honestly, I am not pleased overall with my experience there. Just an FYI- I will not mention here what my condition to why I am going to a dermatology. I originally started going to the Deer Valley location, and initially not thrilled with the atmosphere. Luckily the Dr. I saw prescribed me with meds that were working to a certain extent, but did not help completely. I then, started going to the Anthem location, my initial reaction to the front office staff was positive. I saw my doctor (forgot who it was), was great, but they moved her to the Scottsdale location. I then saw Jacqueline. Her medical assistance, I was not a big fan off. There was a medicine, that was an injection in my leg to help with my skin, and it was painful, and the medical assistant had no empathy at all the pain I was in as she was injecting it into my leg. Still today, 3+ years later, the Dr.'s are unable to find medication to treat my condition. Frustrating, right? As I was seeing Jacqueline, she was providing me cosmetic treatments, and I went back to the deer valley location(2022). This time around my experience was absolutely terrible. The counsel with the aesthetics kept making excusing to not to proceed with any treatments. She basically said to me that there was nothing that she could do. I walked out furious. I called the dermatology the following day and filed a complaint: and they mentioned I could go to two other locations that were not near me. At the time, I was like no, if the deer valley location is able to do this, then they should be able to treat me. I then mentioned this to Jacqueline, she then suggested me to go to the Scottsdale location where they have the resources to do what I need. I was like okay fine. I scheduled an appointment at the Scottsdale location for a BBL. That treatment did not do anything for my skin. That Dr. was great! However, she suggested me using Color Science with my BBL. However, I had an allergic reaction to that, so I was able to return the product (color Science). At this point, trying to treat my skin condition has been going on for at least a year and the Dr.'s still can't figure out what to do. I find this frustrating. I had booked a follow up with Jacqueline back in October 2024, and the next available time slot was January 27th, 2025. I said fine. I get a text a week and a half prior to my appointment date with Jacqueline letting me know that they were canceling my appointment because she was leaving. I understood that she was leaving, but I was furious because whoever schedules, did not call to see if they could get me in the same day that I had scheduled (again, I had this appointment booked for 2 months). I booked my appointment online over a week ago and clocked out of work early, drove faster than I have ever driven in my life and arrived on time to an empty office With zero patients waiting, and I was told that I did not have an appointment at the specific time. I requested for an accommodation given the fact that there Only one man behind me that needed a shot that would take a matter of minutes that he even offered to hurry up his appointment. Christina love denied staying a mirror 10 to 15 minutes past closing time to accommodate seeing me, even though I was physically standing there And the man behind me confirmed that he received a phone call for the 230 cancellation appointment yesterday, which is the one that I specifically scheduled for Myself online a week ago. The receptionist was completely checked out and had zero compassion. She would not provide her name. I work in Healthcare involving patients and customer service on a daily basis in which I bend over backwards to accommodate and treat other Would like to be treated. This is a prime example of the issue with healthcare in the US. Dr was with me for 5 mins and said nothing he can do for sun damage to my arms. I asked if he was planning to look at any other areas of my body and he said no time. I paid my co pay and left. I have tried to get ahold of the company on five occassions about a special they are running. I began seeing Dr. Lal in January. The first time I could schedule a BBL treatment was May. Now the office has a special on BBL Laser only for April, however it is not possible to schedule for this month. This place is absolutely fraudulent. Stay away! I had a 1pm meeting with Dr Karan Lul. I sat in the waiting room until 1:47. I had to wave him down while he was giggling with the staff in the hallway and ask when I would be seen. He saw me from 1:50-1:57 and charged me $150 USD for a "cosmetic" appt. I left frustrated and untreated and did not engage with them again. 2 months later, I got a text that I have an outstanding balance of $250 USD? I called them stating I have my receipt and paid for the appointment already. They are claiming I sought 2 treatments that day, a 1pm and a 1:45pm and had only paid for the 1:45. I've encouraged them to check the cameras to corroborate my experience of sitting in the waiting room until 1:47 and leaving by 1:58. My husband took our daughter in for an initial visit at the beginning of the year to see Dr. Karan Lal. First impressions were not good even though he was a recommendation. Walking in there were patients complaining of the exam rooms not being cleaned up. The MAs left the rooms messy and didn't sanitize. Same thing happened with our daughter's appointment when brought back to a room. Dr. Lal's presence was rushed and short. He had made a comment about one of our daughter's hemangeol spots looking like it was "going to explode". Just seemed a bit insensitive to say instead of being sympathetic. The follow up visit wasn't any better. He had a warmer approach but wasn't good enough for a return follow up. The last straw was trying to get a refill on our daughter's prescription. Apparently, Maxor Pharmacy has been trying to reach him MULTIPLE times for refills but has chosen not to respond. We chose not to bring our daughter back for another poor visit. We chose Phoenix Children's Hospital and are so glad we did so. read more

I have been a long time patient of this office for many years, I arrived at my appointment today to be told that I did not have an appointment, that my account was deactivated and that I had a outstanding balance and had been sent to collections. The front office staff was so rude and couldnt give me any information as to what my balance was. When I told them I had received a confirmation text, confirmed my appointment, checked in online the day before, how is it that they are telling me I dont have an appointment and my account was suspended. They told me to call collections and take care of my balance and my account would be reactivated. The only transaction I was aware of was when I paid my balance of $297.73 on 7/17/2025 which is what the online portal showed me and I paid the full balance I was given. Billing told me I had a balance of $22....... they told me I had not been sent to collections. I am shocked that as a long time patient who has always taken care of my accounts I have been treated this way for $22 which I was unaware of. I was also shocked that they would have no regard for my time and the fact that I showed up to my appointment 15 mins early and nobody bothered to tell me my appointment had been cancelled or that I needed to take care of the balance prior to the appointment. Shocking. I will never return to the office. I usually have a bill of around $1000-$1200 per visist for skin cancers and biopsies and they turned me away for $22 which had I been aware I would have happily paid. Affiliated Dermatology should really teach their front office some customer service and manners. Dont go to this practice, find a office that values you as a patient and treats you with compassion and respect. read more

I have been going to Affiliated Dermatology for 4 years now. I do not go for cosmetic reasons, I have had melanoma skin cancer and basal cell carcinoma in the past. Over the past 4 years I have witnessed the decline in service, attitudes and care. I never used to have to wait more than 15 minutes for my biopsy results or to schedule an appointment. Now it is 24-48 hours for a return call. Unacceptable! Do not blame covid or people not wanting to work. Fair pay brings employees, and restrictions have been lifted for some time. I am tire of waiting for results and having to schedule 6+ weeks out to have excisions!!! Go somewhere that acts like you are important and wants your business. read more

The front office staff, needs work with customer service skills. I walk in to a gas station and im greeted. Not at this medical office and I would assume that a medical office should be more professional and friendly. There's no smiles. There's no hi. How are you? How's your day? They gave my daughter one insurance card back and kept the other one and then I went up to ask what's going on and she was and then she's like I need the other card so then I had to have my daughter come back up to bring the card you know and checking out just because it says I don't need to follow up doesn't mean I don't need a follow up. I had an appointment that I had to cancel and I never rescheduled it and that's why I was trying to tell her that I had to cancel appointment on Thursday, but she kept saying there is nothing to schedule and I raise my voice because I'm like, I'm trying to tell you that I canceled an appointment you know and then the lady that was yawning when I walked in the door she said well that's our manager right there and it Why isn't the helping to resolve this issue? You know what I'm saying like dude come on, what difference if that's the sitting there like come mean the lady wasn't giving me a chance to talk. She was just saying there's nothing to schedule. There's nothing to schedule and then she knows that I need back to back appointments and she's trying to give me an appointment on one day, but doesn't even know if she can give it to me for the next person on the same day, so like dude come on I would assume that's the first thing you do before you pick a day is find a day where you can get two people in back to back. The back office is so friendly they smile I have no problems whatsoever with the back office. If I didn't have issues that I was being seen for then I would probably not go back. Maybe this is acceptable or maybe I have high expectations because I worked in customer service, I always worked on the but I was trained to wear my smile where the customers could hear it. And I mean, like the first person you see when you walk into a business is the person or people that represent the business. Also the office isn't very accessible for making appointments. I have a basal cell cancer on my face that i need surgery on. since I am 1 of 1 programmers at my work I needed a weekend/weeknight appointment. I waited 1 month for the first available Saturday appointment with this office. I confirmed the appointment the friday before at 8am... they sent a text cancelling the appointment because they didn't have enough clients coming in saturday. I re-scheduled and again waited another month. I confirmed the appointment yesterday (friday) via text. I woke up early today... was at their office 10 mins early. They never showed. Was recommended to this group. When I called to make an appointment, I had to listen to their automated recording for quite a while before ever getting to the make an app part. However, during this process they stated about how the Dr was on a DEI board/panel, and how proud they were of that. That's when I hung up before even making the app. I would rather hear about the Dr's MEDICAL accomplishments than their/the company's DEI standings. I'm all for equality but DEI is different and it's my personal opinion that DEI does not serve as a marker for how good a Dr or company is. If they want to practice DEI hiring, ethics, etc in their practice, great, that's their choice. But the only reason to put it on your automated recording is to virtue signal and try to seem progressive. Again just my opinion. read more

STAY AWAY. They went way overkill on my husbands back and took off several moles unnecessarily (as confirmed by a second opinion after the fact. Ugh) They left him with huge scars that took weeks (and in one case MONTHS) to heal. Didn't practice best medicine and instead seemed to be filling some sort of quota. As an absolute icing on the cake, they also charged us incorrectly and have shady billing practices. I work in healthcare and know how to review charts. What they did here was nothing short of billing FRAUD. The charting was incorrect and made it seem that they could bill us for services that were not performed. They "beefed up" the chart so we were stuck with an almost $2000 bill. After trying to get answers and confront them about this, we got brushed off, the office did not care and did not clarify any of the mistakes. I will continue to tell my peers (healthcare workers/providers) and my patients to avoid this place at all costs. You have been warned. read more

If you're going to set business hours, I believe you should adhere to them. They have my belongings and I would like to get them back. I was given a referral to this office from my doctor at Banner. She has the soft touch I've been seeking and I never leave with bruise/s...other places so many bruises and obvious "hits" from the needle! So glad I met her and easy to ascertain appointments! I met with Dr. Jonathan Lavian earlier in June 2024. I have never been so disappointed with a new physician. I waited in the room for almost an hour then when finally met the doctor he had 2 additional students shadowing him, very impersonal. Further more, he quickly looked my area of concern, wrote a script and sent me on my way. Although I did have to wait an unreasonable amount of time, the doctor was good and did help. Also, when I communicated my upset about the delay, he personally called me and apologized, which goes a long way. read more
