I paid all I could manage financially, since he allowed via the judge to order that I pay my child's full private school tuition. The day he signed off on my case, Chris told me specifically that I could leave, "there's no court today, you're home-free." Which resulted in the judge ordering me to pay the ex back $400.00 a month and up to a total of close beyond $14,000.00 for criminal attorney fees and the crooked, court ordered monitor that my P.I. Caught breaking the rules of supervised visitation and carrying on a relationship. Not only did judge Cheryl Kersey order that I pay the ex back, but Chris nor the office notified me of this court order therefore, I didn't fight it within the allotted 30 day timeframe given and wasn't able to appeal the decision. Chris should've fought harder in court for my child and I. Mr. Carter could've told the judge that we didn't want supervised visitation lifted, but that the judge look at the P.I. Evidence against the NCP (non custodial parent/respondent) and the crooked, court ordered visitation supervisor, but he did not. The money I've been ordered by the court to pay the ex, could've gone to paying Mr. Carter however, I'm now only able to afford a lesser payment than what I had been paying him initially. Mr. Carter's office stopped sending me statements for payments and I had so much going on at that time that I'd forget to make a payment, he ended up suing me for around $7,000 - $8,000, he won by default, because the judgement was made in my absence. After approximately eight months of representation and about $20,000+ in legal fees, she informed me that she would no longer represent me. Looking back, I believe the breakdown was largely caused by a serious communication disconnect that could likely have been resolved through one meaningful conversation. Most communication during my case occurred by email. Although email was convenient for routine matters, I spoke with Brittany by phone only two or three times during the entire eight months. As someone going through a divorce for the first time, I did not understand every possible legal scenario, procedural limitation, or consequence. I had certain expectations about what could be completed in order to finalize the divorce quickly, and those expectations turned out to be incorrect. I was frustrated, but I needed my attorney to explain the process, ask questions about my goals, and help identify where the misunderstanding had occurred. Instead, I felt that the communication breakdown was placed entirely on me. I was sent paperwork ending the representation rather than being given an opportunity to have a genuine conversation and repair the attorney-client relationship. The following day, while representing myself, I contacted my former spouse's attorney directly, and we were able to resolve the remaining issues within approximately two days. One of my deepest regrets is that I gave up the opportunity to pursue spousal support because I believed doing so would help bring the divorce to a faster conclusion. I now understand that my expectations were not aligned with the actual process, but that was precisely why I had retained experienced legal counsel. A client hires a divorce attorney because the attorney understands the courts, filings, legal strategy, and consequences that the client does not.
