So much fun!!!! We were vendors for BK2022. Lots of traffic and patrons shopping even though it rained. Felt safe selling and was confident in security to keep our stand safe overnight.

This was my 3rd Afropunk and it was my least favorite. This yr I earned tickets by doing community service and boy am I glad I didn't spill coins. The overall setup was very different and it failed in my opinion. There weren't that many big ticket artists so to speak. Cee Lo Green, Ice Cube and Janelle Monae were pretty much it. Well and George Clinton. The times alloted didn't work. You had to run from one to catch a piece of the other. The Green and Red stages were so close you heard both all night at the same damn time. Clinton and Cube had mic issues which delayed their schedules and they put Ms. Monae on the worse stage. DJ Moma did his things on the ones and twos and I probably enjoyed him more than the featured acts. The shops were cool as usual. Bought a couple dope ass sweatshirts for the fall. I'll go back next yr because I know I'm ot buying tickets and I pray that they'll make changes to have things be better. P.S. the lines to get in were ridiculous. Almost an hr this yr. No bueno!

Omg I've gone to Afropunk Atlanta before, but I have to say that this was the best time I've had thus far. Just the people, and the vibes were amazing. Everyone of all backgrounds, ages, and nationalities coming together for the love of music with Brooklyn in the background was awesome! All weekend I felt the love from everyone. The variety of food, the events, and the different stages were amazing too. I could see the effort put into this event-and it showed. I could also definitely tell a difference in the crowd from day one vs day two. Day one was way more crowded, and day two was much more chill and relaxed. I enjoyed my time regardless though. If you come be prepared to show out, and have fun. I did both, and I'll definitely be back again next year!

Sorry I'm so ugly. Apparently that gives afropunk the right to verbally assault me.....

It claims to be a safe space but the staff at one of the food stands called me a "slut" for no reason. Now I could see if I was twerking on her grampa, or something that was actually slutty. I literally did nothing but order food Also there's absolutely no straight men at afropunk. There's female after female trying to make you feel bad if you are ugly. It was honestly a waste of time. If I wanted to be bullied about being ugly (things I can't control) I could have stayed home

Way too packed with no space to move your arms. People cutting in line. Others smoking weed and cigarettes. The Afropunk Festival was fun, but just be prepared for all of the above. The crowd were for the most part friendly and there to have a good time. I would come back here.

GO TO AP, BUT DO NOT BUY VIP. It is not worth it; they underdelivered on so much of what was promised. No charging stations. The marketing suggests there are enough seats so you don't need a blanket like those in general admin. There were about 10 seats in each VIP section; yet they probably sell 100, 200 (maybe more) VIP tickets. The bathrooms were not well monitored for upkeep: people were using maxi pads as toilet paper because there were none. VIP viewing area should mean that your view will be better; it is not and in some cases it is worse. The red stage VIP, you couldn't even see the stage at all. You could see the side and I don't mean a side view of the performers because there's equipment and stuff that won't allow a view. You have to leave VIP to see anything. That being said, I still had a great time. The VIP ticket didn't elevate my experience because I spent more of the time outside of VIP. I mean I had to if I actually wanted to see the artists and enjoy. I recommend going to AP Brooklyn because it is such chill, black hippy type vibes. I think in the early days I wouldn't have enjoyed it because it was probably heavy on the punk, but now it has something for everyone. There's punk, soul, rap, alternative, house music, DJ's, etc. There's a thrift shop to buy your outfit for the next Black Panther premiere or some beautiful art. There is a chance to learn about activism in the local community. In a large crowd, I never felt like my space was invaded. An atmosphere of respect & love is cultivated and you can feel it. The people are beautiful both inside and out during AP. You should go at least once in your life. Also don't put pressure on yourself to dress up extravagantly. Yes many people wear glorious costumes, but many people also come in regular outfits. Be you beautiful & wear whatever makes you comfortable.

Most awesome thing ever! Live music - art- great people - great scene- great weekend. 2 stages with 2 different styles of rock and close contact with the acts I feel it was pretty well ran and organized. They had EVERYTHING from free nutrition bars and water while on line. A yoga program/opening + mini dance jam.So many different types of vendors ( food, clothing, indie films), and array of well known leading rock acts.No pretention. Just fun The people that moshed were respectful and stayed in their area, unlike how at other Rock venues - I've seen people get taken out bloody from wild over zealous crowd surf accidents, & moshing accidents, drugged out of thier mind, vomiting anywhere. You could have been close to the stage, or off laying in the grass relaxing. Its a really big park with different sections. Harley Davidson exhibits , bmx bike trickers, & showmen, as well as a wall for rock climbing, hearty restaurant on wheels food trucks Check out thier instagram, & those of people who went, it was awesome.! Yes by night fall I realized some people had smoked cigarettes. It is so big with so much going on, its hard to regulate or catch that. I didn't mind the marijuana smell though. the VMAs were up the block, so Afro punk had cool unexpected guests Cant believe this was all free

The one and only D'Angelo. Had to get a tall sista to get this shot for me

This is my second time attending AP fest. The first time I went was incredible, and I got to see Chuck D. along with some local bands. This time around it was the 10th anniversary of Afropunk fest. So many artists across 4 stages, so it was virtually impossible to see every single one. I did get to see Lianne La Havas, Valerie June, Alice Smith, plus a few local acts on day one. The atmosphere was quite different this year throughout the venue because of the events in Ferguson. Example of that was when Ice T was performing with his band Body Count and he did f*** the pigs. It was on everybody's mind but regardless there was fun to be had in a safe environment. Day two was even more live, DJs were doing sets, old school house and hip hop blasting all around, the greenery burning, and people dancing. I got to see SZA, The Internet(odd future), even Zoe Kravitz band Lolawolf came to perform. I wish I could've told Zoe I love her, but security would've crushed me. The main event was D'Angelo!!!!! The one name legend himself was the main headliner and best believe when 8pm came around there was a army waiting for him to bless us with his presence. Since it's well documented that he's a recluse and a no show to events both free and paid, people became upset when he took too long to hit the stage. Then alas relief when Questlove came out with other members of The Roots getting the crowd ready. Then HE came!!!! He came out!! I was hyped. He didn't do any of his more commercial hits, but who cares. The songs he did do were appropriate for the mood and he killed the Sly and the Family Stone's "Thankful and Thoughtful" and Prince's "She's in My Hair" It was a experience, and I went home happy and satisfied, not to mention high as hell from the 7 hour contact high and drunk off the nutcrackers being sold.

This year was my first time attending this event and I was super excited. The atmosphere was full of colorful spirits with amazing souls. I got to the venue a bit early because I got a ride and I wasn't turning down a ride. Lol..Since I was early I asked if anyone needed my assistance before I headed to my booth LivOnNY, which advocates for organ donation. I met some awesome people while I helped set up the cafeteria with food, snacks and beverages. Everyone was so nice and polite. At 12pm I headed to my booth to help spread the importance of Organ Donation. I thank those who opened their heart and took the time to register to become an organ donor. The gift that saves many lives is awesome. I am also happy that I had the chance to see such great artist perform especially Celo Green! Despite the extreme heat of the weather, I had an awesome time and I can't wait for next year's event.

Nyc 2015 was good. There are a variety of artists to listen to. The phone app was very helpful in knowing who was performing and where. Should organize entry into park better. Day 1 line was winding around the corner and took 1hr+ to get in. Food truck lines are obnoxiously long (I'm talking 1 hr long lines for food! ). I didn't really notice any improvements from last year to this year even though this year wasn't free. The performers are great. Overall it's good time with new artists and chill vibe.

Ask the Community - Afropunk Festival

Hello! Two Canadians attending AP this year in Brooklyn and wondering if VIP is worth the splurge? Definitely want to be there for Saturday, but maybe both days is the way to go? If someone could tell me about VIP, if it's worth it (faster lines?)

I don't think its really worth it. I got VIP last year and the only thing different I noticed was that I got a gift bag with a few items in it.

Are kids permitted? Is it a good idea? Is there a cost for them? Mine range from 4-15. Thanks!

Our tickets have instructions that say kids 10 and under are free.

This was a great time! My only complaints / reason I'm giving it 4 stars and not 5 are that 1. why…read morethe heck is this event on a Monday night?, 2. Love their commitment to not canceling an event but would have loved if there was a rain date rather than rain or shine, and 3. I wish they let you buy individual tickets (not in increments of 5). Yes it was rainy and yes it was crowded (c'mon, it's times square after all) but still worth the trip on a work night into the city for a good time with friends and good eats (Lolz @ my friend holding my umbrella while I scarfed down food). They sell in increments of 5, so I got 10 tickets for $10 which is what they advertised for and later went back for another 5 tickets. Most foods cost between 2-3 tickets each... to me, 10 was too few tickets and 15 was too much (thus why I would have liked to buy 10 and then get single tickets from there). If you really want to make the trip worthwhile and sample enough, go for 15. Restaurant vendors I sampled from: 1. Patzeria Perfect Pizza - Tortellini with prosciuutto in the sauce (3 tickets) 2. Schnipper's - Mac 'n Joe (3 tickets) 3. Carmine's - meatball (2 tickets) 4. The View - Swiss chard Ravioli with truffle sauce (3 tickets) 5. Crossroads - Pretzel with "gooey cheese" (3 tickets) 6. Bubba Gump Shrimp - Birthday cake dessert (1 ticket) Of all of them, I was most excited for the ravioli based on presentation but somehow ended up being my least favorite... too creamy (though I'd still want to visit that restaurant as it looks gorgeous, just would order something else). My friend and I thought the mac n joe was amazing (mac n cheese with sloppy joe) and that the pretzel w/ cheese was a great snack (mmm warm pretzel). Tortellini is one of my favorite foods in general so knew I'd like that especially with that sauce. Glad I got to finally try Carmine's- I've never made it there due to it being pricey but at least this event let me have a sample for a grand total of only 2 tickets! Hope to return next year, on a sunnier day!!

The place was jam packed and I was supposed to meet some friends and was never ever to catch up with them. It's best to get their early because it was so crowded we could hardly walk in the narrow street to check out what each vendor had to offer. Since I didn't wait to catch up with my friends I just checked out the longest lines and figured the samples had to be good. I was able to sample some tacos, chicken wings, sliders and water for $15. The food was good but hard to manipulate and eat with the crowds. I wound up standing in a corner to eat my food or sitting on the sidewalk to devour my chicken wings. There were different areas of live entertainment and New Yorkers and tourists seemed to be having a great time. Next time I will come prepared and wear a small bag and get there early to check out more vendors and get more food items..

Macarons! Baguettes! Crepes!…read more I have attended this street festival honoring Bastille Day here in NYC for many years now. The food is always terrific. The weather was sunny and beautiful out. The macarons were amazing as always. And, as always, the crowd was overbearing and annoying. Whoa! Talk about inconsiderate tourists who don't understand how to move aside or what personal space is! This street fair is always packed, and if you are the type that can't stand crowds this is not the place for you. You literally have to fight and push aside people to get from one food stand to the other. Too many people gawking at everything and taking pictures, blocking your way, but not buying anything. For the love of God, would people with kids in baby carriages please stop coming to these festivals? All they do is block up the pathways strolling along at a snails pace, or running into the back of your ankles with these over-sized rolling baby cribs. Take it onto the sidewalks already people. The rest of us would like to get by. Stop insisting on shoving your kids down our throats! Now that my rant is over, I can say I did enjoy the festival for the most part. Live music, waiter race contests, and yummy food. The crepes were awesome - I had a banana and nutella which I scarfed down instantly. Also had a steak sandwich from Bistro Chat Noir that for only $6 was a great deal, and along with a beet salad for $4 made for a nice lunch. Had the most amazing macarons from Macaron Cafe. There was a little bit of everything French here. Baquette stands, macarons, desserts and pastries, crepes, sandwiches, drinks, you name it. If you are willing to fight through the crowd and be patient you can sample some wonderful foods. Spent a few hours there and then bailed out. All in all, it is a decent festival to go to for a few hours on a nice day, sample some tasty treats, but not to spend that much more time there. Many more options on a weekend day in the city away from annoying touristy crowds.

And yes, there were plenty of fine French Pastries!! Crepes looked so delicious. To me the portion sizes were reasonably priced at most of the stands. Some high end names had stands with their usual offerings. They were overpriced as usual. I was really tempted on several occasions. I already had my carbs for the day. No food for me this year. A couple free samples filled me up. The only place I had trouble navigating the crowd was by the stage. Other than that area you could get around pretty easy. Later today it may be thick with people. My point is, this is ALWAYS A GREAT TASTING BBQ. So, try to attend, you'll be glad you did . AND--There is GREAT LIVE MUSIC, TOO!!! Free live music. Please check out the big Apple bbq website for more info. This is a fun, happy, yummy event & you should be there if you love great food & great live music. Mark your calendar....now, for next year...so you don't forget.
