This was my first time back at this theater since cabaret! I loved the way the theater is transformed into this paranormal, spooky, eerie wonder for the paranormal activity play. I was seated on the second to last row, which surprisingly had a few empty seats despite it being a popular production. The merch items were plentiful. Trust me when I say this. I thought that act 1 was incredibly slow paced with a very confusing plot. Act 2 blew me away completely. I had roughly 2-3 jump scares but aside from that, this played out more like a psychological thriller with only a subtle scare factor. read more

The acting performance was phenomenal from a small cast of actors and actresses. Will elaborate on further details via the play itself in a separate review. Mesmerized by the theater space inside as it thoroughly reminded me of the inside of a cave especially the texture of the walls. I had searched up to find that this type of architecture is called a Tuscan villa which was very popular back then during the 15th Century. The dim lighting created the look and sense of a more intimate venue to the audience as they walked up and down the stairs trying to find their seat. I was really excited to watch Paranormal Activity until picking up my ticket from the box office and seeing where I was actually sitting. My seat was in Row Q, the last row on the balcony level of the entire theater. I cannot lie but my mood was instantly brought down like books crashing from a bookcase. I guess I technically couldn't be too upset either since I didn't buy the ticket at full price. That also meant I had no control over my seating arrangement situation. The possibility of getting seated anywhere in the theater, but why did it have to be in the freaking last row? My seat neighbors on the left and right couldn't have agreed more about the almost non-existent, cramped up leg space that it had supposedly provided. Every time the person in front of me had decided to lean back in her seat, my knees would get this tightened feeling of being pressed. Not fun. Trust me, it was definitely annoying and uncomfortable to say the least. During the 15-min intermission, I was able to stand up to stretch my legs and hips. My left seat neighbor wanted to go to the restroom. Oh great. So, everyone in my row had to stand up + move their stuff out of the way to steel clear from the already tight space. Had the pleasure of seeing the closing show of Dog Day Afternoon starring my favorite actor, Jon Bernthal. I got my ticket just 2 days before and totally lucked out getting a seat on the second row. This was a huge plus for me cos I've never been a fan of the first row. And my seat was in the middle which is my preference. I made sure to use the bathroom before the show because I didn't want to wait until intermission. This theater is beautiful. The seat is comfortable and is fairly spacious. The show was amazing. I was so impressed with the set direction. And the sound was bangin. There's a bit at the end where a helicopter is supposed to land and it got pretty loud in there. It was realistic enough that I really turned away cos I really thought a copter was going to land. Lol Kudos to the staff for handling business. I got to the theater about 20 minutes before the show and the line was bonkers. Legitimately took over both ends of the street. I was at the back. Some dude asked us what we were in line for. Haha The line moved so quick. There were folks reminding everyone to have their bags ready to be checked and ticket ready so that entrance could be a breeze. The usher by the bar assisted with directing folks which way to go. Everyone was super nice. Exiting was a breeze. Someone reminded people to mind their steps. read more

One thing I really liked about the August Wilson Theatre in Midtown is that it's not too big or too small- it's the perfect size. You don't even feel lost in here. When you get here, you'll see a line outside, but don't worry- it moves fast. You go through a security scanner, they'll check your purse and before you know it, you're inside. The ushers were friendly and super helpful too. Hubs and I haven't been to Broadway in eons and the best part when you're buying your tickets online, the theater lets you preview the view from almost every seat before you buy. Again- I forgot the lay of the land of Broadway. I clicked around just to see what the mezzanine looked like and I knew right away it wasn't for us. Then I checked out orchestra seats. It doesn't even matter that they're the expensive ones, but honestly- being that close to the stage isn't my thing and I really don't want to spend 2 hrs with my neck so far back looking up at the stage. I kept playing around with the seating chart and landed on Q aisle seats when I treated hubs to 'Dog Day Afternoon' with Jon Bernthaland Eboni Moss-Bachrach. PERFECT. We had an amazing view of the entire stage. We could see the actors' energy, plus everything happening around them. For me, those seats were worth it. read more

Checking "Playbill" I realized I'd never been to this theater, despite having seen scores of Broadway productions in my lifetime. I like this venue. Like many others, the building is a century old but designed a bit differently. The orchestra is one story above ground level allowing for a spacious entrance lounge. Apparently, there's a lift making it wheelchair accessible. We climbed steps. Like most of my theater reviews, I mention the women's restroom. It's ground level, with fifteen or more numbered stalls. (I said I like this venue!) Through one of my theater groups I snagged inexpensive orchestra seats for "Dog Day Afternoon." I thought there was okay legroom ... but granted, I'm short. And sitting at the end, I took full advantage of stretching out in the aisle. As far as the production: talented cast, innovative set, but really -- the movie is better. read more

Great place to see a show. Can be a little chaotic with one entrance into the theater. They do have a QR code so you can get delivery to your seat instead of waiting in line at the bar. We sat in Orchestra left and still had a great view of the show. Outside the actors will stop briefly to sign autographs. read more

Brrrrrrr! It's cold in here- there must be some Bernthal in the atmosphere! Its true. The theatre was cold and Bernthal was in the house. As soon as Dog Day started advertising it was on my radar. Why would I not want to see Bernthal and Cuz in a Btoadway play?! Tickets went on sale, happily impressed with orchestra seating pricing. Day of, easy entrance. Plenty of ushers. Better seats, comfort wise, than the theatre we were in the night before. More leg room and space! Amazing set design and usage of the stage! The show was wonderful and every seat is a good seat with a great view and you can ear clearly. The theater is beautiful. The chairs are awful if you're tall and if you're thick and tall I would imagine very uncomfortable, do pick a seat with legroom if possible. I would see another show there for sure. The August Wilson Theatre was expertly transformed into the Kit Kat Club for the Broadway performance of Cabaret. I saw the performance with Adam Lambert in the role of the Emcee in February 2025. While this is a review of the theater, I must say that Adam Lambert's performance was superb. The theater gives beautiful Italian vibes with opulent decor including arches and columns, beautiful chandeliers and a disco ball. They ushered us in through a semi dark hallway to keep the vibe of the cabaret. I couldn't take many pictures because it was a theater, after all. I definitely recommend checking out the play and the theater both were fantastic. read more

Came here for a Saturday matinee for "A Dog Day Afternoon", which was a show that I highly recommend! The theater also helped to make sure the viewing experience was ideal. Although it is a bit on the smaller side of the theaters I've been, it uses its size well and doesn't make you feel overly cramped like a lot of other venues do. Layout and staffing are very good and efficient about making sure everything is runs smoothly, I've never seen a bathroom line move so steadily! Location is also easy to get to from most of the subway lines nearby. read more

The way this theater was transformed into the Kit Kat Club as part of an immersive "Cabaret" -- just astounding! I splurged last-minute on a ticket, and I'm so glad I did! Everyone was quickly ushered into a side door and down a long walkway. We were given stickers to place over our phone cameras. And then once inside, several bars and performers were spaced throughout. Come to find out, we entered through the second floor, I think, and the basement, which featured a small stage and larger bar, is really the theater's lobby. The main stage area and seating has been transformed into a round stage with seating all around, including cocktail seating closest to the stage. This transformation is especially stark when you see photos from when it was a more traditional stage for "Funny Girl." The actors used the full space, entering the stage through the audience. And even with all of these changes, it was never hard to hear the performance, even from my seat in the balcony. This was a theater experience I will always cherish! read more

Saw Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club located at August Wilson Theater, and it was a totally different kind of Broadway experience. The theater setup was great, with a round stage and unique seating that made you feel like part of the show. They placed stickers over the phone cameras, so no pics--which was a shame because the lounge downstairs and stage design were beautiful. Some folks must've been photo ninjas in order for them to take the pics that they did. I finally won the lottery after trying for a while and got a great seat. I saw Cabaret here and it was a phenomenal experience. I thought everything was great from the show to the theater, and I really think the theater was made for this show! They had the whole thing set up at the Kit Kat Club and it felt very immersive which I loved. It truly felt like we were at a cabaret. It is a smaller theater and we were on the first level in the back row but our view was perfect. The stage is in the center of the room and the seating goes all around, I truly don't think there is a bad seat in the house. They also had a few different bars and performance areas set up outside of the theater to buy cocktails and watch acts prior to the show. It was truly a full experience that utilized the space so well! For this show we had to cover our cameras inside so I don't have many photos of the experience but there are still a couple weeks to check it out! read more

Wow! I hadn't been planning to go to a musical during our NYC trip, but Facebook knew I would LOVE to see Orville Peck in Cabaret. Our tickets were $77 (I had been looking at seats online a couple times and then it dropped 30% off the price suddenly, that was cool). The theater is AMAZING with a rotating round stage. Beautiful theater, built in the 1920s. There's probably not a bad seat in the house in this 1,225-seat theater. But some of the expensive seats would have been spectacular. The performance was great, it felt very special and intimate. The stage rotates during the performance, and there were minimal props so we could always see the characters. Drinks and bathrooms are downstairs. There's a winding path with lots of up and down stairs though I'm sure there must be a workaround for people with mobility issues (I would call in advance though). Staff is super helpful and friendly. Parking and traffic are probably a huge problem there. We took the subway and that was super easy. They put a sticker over your phone camera to remind you that you can't take pictures. Totally amazing experience that really added a lot to our vacation (though was reasonably priced IMO). "Cabaret" has a long production history in NYC, and this latest revival at the August Wilson Theatre is spectacular. Set in Berlin during the early 1930s, the musical focuses on the hedonistic nightlife at the seedy Kit Kat Klub where "life is beautiful" even as the Nazis rise to power and the outside world crumbles into violence, racism and chaos. The August Wilson Theatre has been transformed into a gorgeous replica of the Kit Kat Club with a circular stage in the middle of the venue flanked by tables where patrons can order food/drinks, as well as regular orchestra and mezzanine seats. One enters the theatre through a dim cement alley to set the tawdry mood. We had orchestra seats with good legroom and great sight lines. Eddie Redmayne was perfect as the debauched emcee, and Gayle Rankin sang her heart out as dissipated showgirl Sally Bowles. I guess it's inevitable to make comparisons of this production with prior ones. I saw "Cabaret" in 1998 at Studio 54 with Alan Cummings as emcee and Natasha Richardson (RIP) playing a more vulnerable Sally Bowles. That was a darker production with more pathos and less razzle dazzle. Which was better? It's all a matter of taste, each version wonderful in its own way. Pro Tips: Tickets must be purchased through the SeatGeek app. No pictures/videos of the production are allowed. (Staff placed stickers on everyone's phone to prevent any verboten photography). The bartender on the upper level made us mocktails off menu & the merch cabinet clerk was friendly. I've seen a handful of different Broadway shows at this theatre! The aesthetic alone is so eye catching. It was redone to look like the imagined Kit Kat club. A Saturday matinee, the day was warming up and the line was shaping up with only a few people in the shade. One if the employees said the VIP lounge was pretty empty and if we wanted to get inside, buy and enjoy some drinks and snacks without the VIP price tag for lounge they would escort us up to it. We ordered some wine, a soda and enjoyed a few minutes of a great theater staff. Time for the show, we walked out a door that led us straight out to the Mezzanine section, where our seats were. Another great theater staff moment and a few steps and we were sitting down, the seats were comfortable but a little narrow as the person's shoulders on either side of me touched my shoulders. The sound sounds was awesome, the lighting was great. Intermission bathroom break and a second drink in the VIP lounge made intermission painless and another great interaction with theater staff. After the show, the staff jumped into action and yelled and pointed out faster exits for the crowds. While the staff wears black to blend in and be invisible for the show we attended (which was awesome) they are what makes this theater experience truly great. read more

One, I can only speak for the theater setup for Kit Kat Club at Cabaret, as the theater has been totally transformed and rebuilt for this production. Two, they put stickers over your camera as soon as you enter, so no photos. Anyone who does have photos was breaking the rules (not like I'm some prude, but I do think it's great to go in blind and preserve the magic of this place). The new setup for the theater is arena style, with a large round stage in the middle, surrounded by a few rows of club style tables, then orchestra, then mezzanine and upper levels. Some people have said whether you sit on the east or the west side of the theater affects how often the players face you. I don't think this is true. I think the players spent an equal amount of time facing each part of the audience. I wanted to have a table, but they would ONLY allow you to buy two seats at a time, which would be like buying two tickets for a single person. Kind of a jerk move. The orchestra seats right behind the tables were decent views, but they weren't built on a slant, so a very tall guy two rows in front of me blocked half of the performer's bodies. I kept having to look around his head on either side. But the seats are not tiny, you actually have room to sit and not be pressed up against the person next to you. And they have a small table/bar in front of you where you can place your drinks. And the isle has plenty of legroom. The staff was nice, professional, helpful. Decent theater setup for what it is. And below, my review of the play itself, Cabaret: This place is like a magical circus. You can pick up a shot of schnapps at the door. Then they have different "clubs" or "bars" on all levels, all with different menus and themes. The lower level is the vault bar, which has restrooms and coat check. I got a light and tasty gin drink from a very nice and dramatic bartender. A very nice attendant told me where to stand to have the best view of the show, as there is a prologue and dance/muscial show before the play. And he kept everyone from standing in the way and blocking that great view! I also had reservations to the Pineapple room, which is a private lounge. You could choose a vegan or charcuterie option for food and purchase half a bottle of champagne. There were also three private bathrooms, which was great. It was a nice oasis, but it was far away from our orchestra seats. See my prior comment about not being able to purchase a single seat at the front tables (to get a front table, I would have had to have purchased two seats, so twice the price, over a grand). My orchestra seat and Pineapple room ticket was still around 500 bucks. It wasn't necessarily my style of play/musical, but the talent was great, and it was awesome to see Eddie Redmayne (by the time you read this, it will probably be changed over to Adam Lambert). There was so much drama and fanfare, colorful, glittery makeup. And the love story was so happy, then tragic. This production is brash and bawdy. I watched Lea Michele in Funny Girl! It was so enjoyable watching her actually play Barbra Streisand's character, whom her character from Glee adored. Of course the crowd went wild for "Don't Rain On My Parade". This theater is small. I'm just going to say it. I got row L seats, and I felt I was pretty close to the stage. I have short legs, and I felt there was barely any leg room. Don't recommend coming here for comfort. I didn't feel stuffy. I just couldn't really stretch my legs or bring my hands up to fix my hair without bumping the people next to me. Another issue is I couldn't see the center of the stage. I just saw the back of a guy's head! The second floor (mezzanine) starts above orchestra's row M. Both gender restrooms are on the same side of the theater. Security and check in process was very easy. They kept people moving. read more

Honestly I really liked this theater. It's smaller than others I have been it but that means that there are really no bad seats. I was in the mezzanine but still felt like I could actually see the actors and their facial expressions. We got there after doors opened. Around 7:40 and show time was at 8. This felt perfect because there was no line and we just zipped right through security and had time to stop at the bathroom before going to our seats. The seats are a little small and if you have long legs you will probably feel cramped against the seat in front of you but I feel like that's expected of an old broadway theater. The temperature was comfortable and the sound was great. Funny girl was amazing! I feel like this is the perfect theater for this show. read more

Not a great theater for viewing a show...IMO. In the 5th row Left Mezz, that is. Incredibly small stage. We saw Funny Girl and the Follie dancers had absolutely no room to spread out. One of the smallest stages that I recall taking notice of (even if the sq footage isn't "small", it appeared cramped) The mezzanine seats are positioned in a way that you see the head in front of you, and not the stage. While I require no leg room, the folks behind us seemed to be squished with their knees hitting the backs of our seats. Very steep steps up up up with no accessibility for those not avid mountaineers or sheep herders. No way my active but 80 year old parents could have comfortably made it up those stairs. Staff was friendly. Show wasn't great, we left at intermission. read more

Didn't know what to expect from this play, but boy was I pleasantly surprised at how much I loved it. Definitely a much needed pick me upper that everyone can use in the current times. The show was amazing--so uplifting and motivating. Actors were fantastic, the stage and set were shiny and glamorous, the plot was engaging and entertaining. The performance started at 8:05pm, had a 20 minute intermission, and ended at 10:47pm. The cast deserved that standing ovation. Highly recommend! A solid 3 for the August Wilson Theatre due to the incredibly cramped seats, clean theatre, and great views even from the back. The leg room situation is absolutely terrible. I'm 5'10", and my hips and knees hurt after the performance from scrunching up for so long. The only other theatre I've been more miserable at was the Ambassador for Chicago. That being said, there are no bad seats in this theatre. My boyfriend and I saw Funny Girl with Lea Michele last night from the center mezzanine, row N, and had a full view of the stage and characters' expressions (to our satisfaction anyway). Since Funny Girl is wrapping up September 3, I hope a show I don't want to see occupies this theatre next, as I really don't want to sit in those seats again. read more

August Wilson is a smaller theater with a more intimate feel. The seats are really tight. We had front row center seats for a recent performance of Funny Girl. There's not the additional legroom you might expect. In a regular row, at least you can put your feet a little under the seat in front of you, but the stage is a hard stop. It's not a high stage, but is a little higher than eye height, so you miss a little of the stage floor, but it's well made up being able to really see all the detail, the facial expressions, etc. Several short flights of stairs up to the orchestra level. Bathrooms are at the street level. Nothing that would give you pause to attend a show playing there (and Lea Michele in Funny Girl is an excellent choice). Just not the nicest or most comfortable broadway theater. read more

This theatre is a great space. Saw Funny Girl here. It is really well maintained, features two bars (mezzanine and lobby level), and uses the physical space really well to move people in and out. It is not, however, very accessible so if you have limited mobility you may want to call ahead to arrange assistance. read more
