We engaged Green American Builders to carry out some basic work in June 2025 that they estimated…read morewould take around seven to ten days. It ended up taking several weeks including a second attempt at the work due to poor work and other issues. The company was engaged to plaster, paint and do basic repair work in a laundry area and to paint (woodwork, walls and ceilings) in a hallway, two bathrooms and two bedrooms. The quote was $8,650. Basic work such as covering surfaces started on the laundry area and the hallway ahead of the July 4th weekend. The team then took and a new team arrived Monday - that was when things started to go off the rails. Among the issues were the addition of an item not included in the original quote due to a misunderstanding and the wrong paint being used which led to increased costs of $1,600. They then started work in multiple rooms at the same time which left us with several rooms out of action. Around the midweek mark we also started to notice quality slipping, more mistakes being made, and more misunderstandings about what needed to be done e.g. marble being painted over, closet interiors that were not on the brief were being painted etc. and new faces continued to appear but didn't seem to have been briefed on the job. By the end of the second week issues continued so we stopped the work entirely. One of the owners came in to see the job for themselves and admitted it wasn't up to standard and asked for the crew to be allowed back in correct the issues. We agreed. After that second attempt at the job, we told them that we wanted to have a few days to sit with what had been done and inspect it thoroughly. In order to release the crew, we were asked to sign a document saying that were "100% satisfied" with the work. However, after inspection, it quickly became clear again the work was not up to standard - this included paint peeling off woodwork as water-based paint had been applied over oil-based paint without sufficient prep. Also, the ceiling in the laundry area remained unpainted, so we reached out again to raise the issues. This was met with hostility from the same owner who had originally come out to inspect the work. The company's other owner than reached out, apologized for that experience, and came out to inspect the work. They agreed it was not to the acceptable standard. They offered for the team to either come out a third time to correct the issues or a nominal partial refund ($2,800). We declined the offer to have the team do a third attempt at the work and began the process of negotiating what we considered to be a fair refund that would partially cover the cost of having the work redone. After months, we were offered a refund ($3,900) but with conditions attached including not writing a review. When the offer was eventually increased ($5,000), it was requested that the payment be made in installments (five equal installments of $1,000, disbursed every two weeks) "due to the financial impact on the company" and then as the company was "restructuring" I was asked to "provide a written statement" describing the previous incident, specifically outlining how we were "threatened and disrespected" by the other owner. Not wanting to be bound by those conditions, we refused. What should have been a simple job became a world of drama, back and forth, and, a year later, we are having to engage a new company to rectify and redo the work done by Green American Builders.

The communication was disrespectful from David, he threaten and used foul language , the behavior was unacceptable, and the service was far from what was promised. There were issues with inaccurate project estimates, poor communication, and even inappropriate language directed toward the client. No customer should have to deal with that level of disrespect. Save yourself the time, money, and unnecessary stress. I would not recommend this contractor and will not be using their services again. He's literally a horrible human to interact with.

In terms of improvement, I think timelines slipped by a few weeks because of various reasons and there were some minor miss understandings along the way which could have been handled better. But this could come up with any 2 parties working together for your first time. The good thing with Ben is that he was open to feedback, was eager to improve and win my future business.
