We love the food and the teams at the restaurants take very good care of all the details. Yesterday, we had a few spa treatments ... and today, we will get a salt scrub and massage. The spa is beautiful and very special too. I recommend their unique spa experience for everyone staying here ... plan on a few treatments in advance. It's worth it. Thankfully a friend told us to come here or we never would have known about it. It took a few hours by train to get here from Rome and we stayed four days which is a nice amount of time to explore and enjoy the property. I love it! From the minute we were scooped up at the train station in our little golf cart ... the team here has really made every part of our visit something special to remember. PS: NOTE - Do not use the location - directions of this property from this Yelp page ... whomever added it to Yelp was nearly six miles away from the property so the address and location is incorrect. The whole city is fascinating, especially its history, which is worth exploring to better understand. The most famous part of Matera is called the Sassi, which means "stones." This area is made of two old neighborhoods, Sasso Caveoso and Sasso Barisano, where people carved their homes and churches directly into the soft rock of the mountains. It's one of the oldest continuously inhabited places in the world, with a history dating back 7,000 to 9,000 years! You can now walk through these neighborhoods and get a feel for what they might have looked like back then. The architecture is very interesting because the houses are stacked on top of each other, with some roofs serving as streets for the houses above. It's hard to believe that people lived there under very difficult conditions up until the 1950s; at one point, it was even referred to as the "shame of Italy." This was due to the very poor conditions of living. Some people even lived with their livestock under the same roof! However, things have changed significantly since the Sassi became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993. Today, you can walk through the narrow alleys, explore the restored cave homes, and find restaurants and hotels built into the caves. It has become a major cultural treasure. Our group of six agreed that it was a fantastic visit, well worth the time and effort. I highly recommend taking the opportunity to see Matera's ancient Sassi.

Prices here are very reasonable and there are hundreds of hotels and B&B to choose from. I recommend coming on the shoulder months as it was super pleasant to walk around and not be crushed with people. Matera is filled with history and is the 3rd oldest in the world. Amazing tours to be taken. Transportation is available if walking the steps is a bit much for you. If you come to Southern Italy Matera is a must see.

First let me tell you this place is NOT a resort in anyway, so don't expect it. Secondly they do get high marks for converting a convent to a hotel. However, the negatives outweigh the positives. First the rooms are as small as the rooms in most Paris hotels. The toilet is so small you can go to the toilet, take a shower and brush your teeth at the same time. We were the only ones there last week. The staff suggested that its better for them to deliver our breakfast each morning instead of setting up the breakfast room just for us. We agree. Well low and behold when we checked out they charged us 20Euros for room service. We argued with the owner on checkout and he finally caved in and gave us the 20Euro credit. We then wanted to have dinner at the hotel. We were the only ones there. On checkout they ripped us off for 52Euros for one plate of pasta and a salad. Had I known this I would have driven to town! I goofed and should have asked the price before! JP Morgan said "If you have to ask the price you can't afford it". I am amending this quote and stating if you don't ask the price you are a fool! The owner should not be in this business. He "pissed" us off royally! I can only imagine how he treats other guests. Would not stay here again or recommend. Too many other place where they don't abuse you!
