I fully admit this review is being written in my honeymoon period of getting into the gym. But…read morehere goes anyway. Two weeks ago, I was out running errands and saw the sign for Tactical Arts Academy. I also saw that it was almost exactly halfway between my office and home. So, I went to their website to see what they could do for me -- someone who's never been able to commit to exercise and who hasn't ever been able to find a fitness program they could tolerate enough. Leslie replied to my web inquiry quickly and we met the next day to discuss my situation. I told him my big fear was that I am massively out of shape. He explained that's why I was there. We discussed CrossFit and how the workouts can be scaled to meet someone's level. I decided to give it a try. My first three sessions have been one-on-one to learn how to do CrossFit safely. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't sore. Ibuprofen can fix that. But after each session, I come away feeling that I've accomplished something. Here's what I can tell you though. Leslie and Sergio, the two instructors, are beyond supportive. I feel encouraged and like I'm making headway. They're patient with newbies like me. And there's virtually no pressure. You're encouraged and pushed, but it's not boot camp. There's no drill instructor yelling at you. It's more like being mentored. And it's pushing me into fitness. There's no pressure to buy stuff. There's no long term contracts either. And heck, the gym is climate controlled and out of the elements so weather isn't an excuse. They offer CrossFit classes both at lunch and after work. Martial arts and self defense are in the evening if that's something you want to pursue as well. For once, I honestly feel I can keep up a commitment to being fit. If that keeps up, I'm going to have to ask Yelp for a one time exception to allow for a six star review.

I made sure to wait before writing a review to make sure it wasn't just the "i'm getting back in…read moreshape" craze of starting at a new gym. I've been working out here for the strength training classes since March, and it's been simply amazing. Bottom line up front: I've made amazing improvements in skill and strength and have lost around 18 lbs so far. TAA didn't do all of that, but Leslie and Sergio make this place a fun and engaging environment where you can achieve realistic goals. It's a great space with an open floor plan. The format of the work outs take off a lot of the pressure of trying to squeeze a bunch of work into an hour. Everyone who works out there is just like you: just trying to get back in shape - not some yelling raging meat head. I highly recommend Tactical Arts Academy for anyone who is looking for a low stress workout to get into their weekly routine.

A great convenience for us. 3) The kids not only learn karate, but discipline and responsibility: they clean the dojo together for instance. 4) The younger kids get to see the older kids lead classes. 5) Convenient location. Would highly recommend!

Austin Kenpo Karate ROCKS!!!…read more Sifu Schroeder is such a wonderful person & an excellent teacher. I enrolled my son just over a year ago & he absolutely loves it there. His confidence & self esteem has blossomed & I am amazed at his discipline. Sifu goes out of his way to develop close relationships with his students & their families. We love the school gatherings... pumpkin carving contests at Halloween & the Christmas party is always tons of fun. I have had the pleasure of working closely with Sifu in his after school program this year, helping out with the kids & website issues & I can tell you that the time & attention he gives to these kids after school is just unmatched in any program I have seen. He is definitely a wonderful role model & I would trust him 100% with my son in any situation... & that is not something I take lightly.

Master Blankenship has over 50 years of training experience and is still an exceptional athlete. He and his instructors teach an incredible comprehensive and rich system which includes 8 complete styles - hung gar kung fu, pekua kung fu, tae kwondo, karate, okinawa te, hapkido, jujitsu, yang style tai chi, and chi gong. You can choose which days you want to train and which styles you like best and design your own program from the classes that go on 6 days a week. I was in an environment of exceptional people that were practicing martial arts to do more than just get in shape. There we were learning how to use martial arts to challenge ourselves to find and live into our full potential. And the concepts we learned were generalizable to the board room, our relationships, our families, our relationship with ourselves. What I found most exceptional was that Master Blankenship and the instructors not only understand, practice, and live their lives as martial artists (which is rare) but they have an advanced understanding of the mechanics of the body and the science of learning so the level of instruction is top notch and not just a bunch like what I've been seeing everywhere else where the instructor got his black belt and thought that's all that was needed to open a studio and teach. If I could transport this studio to where I live now I would be a lifelong student of the arts. I highly recommend a visit if you are curious about Martial Arts. See the incredible environment, meet the exceptional instructors, experience what martial arts can be.

I came here yesterday. I am a old guy, broken down from a great life of being a musician,…read moremotorcycle wrecks, race car wrecks, skiing disasters, playing Army for many years and basically burned the candle at five ends. Add the tum tum, and you would think this is the last place I would end up. The different orthopedic doctors and Physical Therapists all basically said go to something like this and see what makes you hurt :-( . I called and talked to the business and it turns out that they have many different types of classes, including rehab and recovery. They would make adjustments for me if needed. The business was spotless and organized to a T. Then came the class. The instructor, Jennifer, was quite charming as was the staff. The attendees were all ages, shapes, sizes, and I was not the only man there. Jennifer said she could adjust the instruction if needed due to all my damage and I said no way, go full blast and if I had problems I would adjust myself. So, full of confidence, I started immediately with the class which was a "grace", or something like that, for newbies. Jennifer was enthusiastic, and kept the tempo going. I had some problems at first following the instructions as I was new to this, but with the mirrors and her assistants, I started getting the idea. Yeah! I heard "shake it off and rest" but I could never see where "rest" was in the picture. I realized that if I totally stopped I would never be able to start up again, so I did the best I could. Then I learned to hate the words "bar and barre". When you are told to grab or lean on the bar, you are really going to get it. All in all, it was wonderful. Jennifer or one of her assistants would come and help with advice, and there was only 2 moves I could not do. When we were finally finished, my muscles were shaking so bad from lack of use in the past few years, I asked my wife to drive home, much to her glee. Fast forward 1 day and I am worn out and sore, but in a good way. I am definitely more flexible, I don't have pain where I used to have pain, so this event probably saved me a lot of money to doctors and therapists as I know now where to target and to what extent I can handle and still live.

Walking into the studio you feel like you're in a trendy little boutique. Cute furniture, modern furnishings. The receptionist immediately greeted my friend and I and gave us a quick tour around. I felt very comfortable there for it being my first time. The instructor, Emily, met with us before class to explain what we were in for and reassure us that it was ok to work out within our own limits and take breaks as needed. We did the Shape class which encompasses strength training and toning. You might think a class loosely based on ballet sounds kind of like an easy work out, but it was definitely not! I work out at least a few times a week and this class really put me in my place. My arms were aching 5 minutes in and my butt was burning pretty much the whole time. I can't see how you wouldn't get in shape if you do this class regularly! There's a special right now where you get 2 classes for $22 as a new client and it was totally worth it. I have felt healthy and energized all day. It's nice to work out in such a clean and pretty environment. I really hope to make this a regular part of my week.

The classes I've attended the most are the morning classes Professor Davis definitely has a lot of high level moves and concepts but breaks it down so that it's scaffolded to all levels. He's literally said 'you can stop here if you're comfortable.' He's also very accessible, both as an instructor and just as a human being. There isn't a rigid formality here so if you have a question or are frankly, lost like I frequently am you can just stop and ask for help without being afraid of being 'that guy.' I had to pause due to surgery/recuperating and it was as easy pausing my billing and being told if I needed more time to just let them know. I'm looking forward to get back on the mats and start training again-where I'm definitely going to have to ask a lot of questions.
