My son usually attends the Tuesday and Thursday class at 5pm. It usually runs past the hour and continues into kid friendly games. I love that. Like right now I'm watching and they've finished promotions and on to games at 6:12pm. Adult classes start at 6:30 so they're never pressured on time like most other gyms/classes. read more

I love these guys. I've been training with Professor Ricardo and his great group of coaches since NOV 2019. During that time I went from being a white belt that didn't know jack to a blue belt that was competent enough to handle nearly any white belt, regardless of size. All the students and teachers at this school are incredibly patient and they are like a family to me. They make for a great learning environment -- no one is going full blast trying to rip your arm off. I've called this business repeatedly over the last month or two. I have also emailed them several times. They refuse to return my calls, give me pricing via email or answer any general questions via email. It seems like an incredibly poor business practice to not be straightforward with your plans/pricing to potential clients. GBNA lack of basic business etiquette makes it extremely easy for me to go with another gym. You should really consider dropping your car salesman tactic of getting people to sign up for a intro class so you can put on the hard sell. Just be upfront and everyone will be much happier. read more

It is awesome that more Gracie Barra Schools are opening up in the TX area. Gracie Barra Austin has to be one of the best Brazilian Jiu Jitsu schools around. They have a great atmosphere and their classes are perfect for any age. They are very family oriented. It is already uncomfortable enough to try and learn a new skill but there you feel like a part of the team the moment you walk in. It's the best BJJ Training you will find. Stay clear of this place! They have been charging my credit card since May, even after having an agreement to not use this credit card. They also canceled classes multiple times 15 minutes prior to class due to air conditioning problems and still charge you. I'm giving them a one star because the guy that taught the class was kind and patient. It's a shame because unfortunately they have some crooked management. read more

I'm a grad student who visited Austin for a month of dissertation research. I've been training for about 5 years and wanted to find a place to train while I was away from home. GB North Austin is a fantastic place and I'm glad I had the chance to train there. Prof Rodrigo de Moraes is incredibly knowledgeable and demonstrates techniques with great detail (even highlighting points on familiar techniques that I never noticed before). The facilities are kept clean. The group that trains there is a kind and welcoming community that definitely represents the 'BJJ for all" mentality. I reached out to GB North Austin by email a few weeks ago to see about training with them while I was in town on business. They returned my email promptly and invited me to visit their school. I attended class tonight and had a fantastic time. Professor Moraes provides great instruction and all the team members were welcoming and great to train with. The school is clean and professional. The Staff was super nice and my Daughter was super excited to start taking classes in January of this year. We signed her up and she had a good time till she got grounded so we took her out of the classes. That is where my HUGE issue with them starts we took her out within the 30 days of her starting as our contract stated and we have been billed every month since. When I call and ask for help with this I am told to email a "Carla" who never gets back to me. NOT OK!! To make matters worse I then had to report this to my credit card and they stopped the payments to them, and this month they billed my bank account " I had used the bank card there once to buy gear" that I never gave them permission to bill.......... that is called fraud and I'm going to take action against them! The instructors here are fantastic, enthusiastic and supportive. Classes are a mix of levels and ages, and involve a mix of conditioning, technique and sparring. I love the class schedule, which is easy to fit into my work/life/school schedule. Classes are offered at 6 am, noon, evenings and Sat mornings. This was NOT the first BJJ school in Austin I tried, and what led me here was the supportive, family-like atmosphere they cultivate. Other places had kind of a macho feel, which made me uncomfortable. But here, I walked in for my first class, and everyone here was bending over backwards to work with me and help me. Diverse group of people who work hard but also have fun. I'm in the best shape of my life, and I feel constantly challenged here. read more

Some background: I took a 10 year break from Brazilian jiujitsu shortly after receiving my blue belt due to an injury. As such, I was really looking for a safe and friendly place to train and grow, and Gracie Barra North Austin is the perfect place for that. After being very disappointed in the other Gracie's classes offering I decided to give this place a chance.When you walk in it's super clean and smells nice. The lady behind the front desk was super nice and helpful. Although they have been doing this for like 60 years they make you feel at home.No superstar or I'm better than you bs here. Matts are clean and the head professor Marcelo is very nice and good at what he does(duh he's a blackbelt!). Prices are a bit higher than the other gracie place but worth even to pay 3x that amount for the environment you work in.No pushing you into signing up. They have currently no shower here,but they just opened this facility. read more

My 6 year old daughter has been attending since March of 2013. In that time, I have seen her confidence explode into something extraordinary. Coach Andrew has been an amazing teacher and coach. I have seen him work with kids from all abilities and attention levels over this time period, and he handles each child with such patience that it is truly awe-inspiring. His instruction is very detailed and thorough. The other coaches, currently Coach Kyle and Coach Norma, are just as amazing. I attribute all of the awesomeness to these coaches to the awesomeness of Professor Ricardo Moraes. Professor Ricardo's passion for BJJ exudes him pretty much every moment he's there. He is amazing with the kids. All of these factors have now worn in on my 7 year old daughter and she has finally decided to try. She is the opposite of my other daughter in demeanor, very shy and delicate. She just started and is already in love with it. Now... dad and I are considering joining in as well! The studio is clean, organized and smoothly managed. The highlight of my week is getting to watch all the kids in class. It is extremely entertaining and I love that we can hang around and watch. I actually think this helps kids in the confidence department, too - having their parents there, constantly praising them. I was saddened to see the low reviews here regarding the contracts. It is definitely non-issue. If you are looking for a place that runs a little deeper than just a class, this is it. First, let me just state that I have no affiliation with this school, and I stand to gain nothing by posting this review. I am new to BJJ, but I am not new to martial arts. I grew up learning Kung-Fu, and have dabbled in Muay Thai, Jun Fan, Kali and Boxing. Anyway, on to the specifics about this school. First off, this school is the cleanest, nicest school in Austin. Period. It's clear Prof. Marcelo takes pride in his school. The mats are cleaned regularly with disinfectant. When ringworm and staph are considered, cleanliness is very, very important. Another thing to note is that the place doesn't smell like a gym. I've walked into other BJJ schools and have been KO'd by the stink. The school has a very warming, welcoming atmosphere. When I first walked in I was greeted with smiles and waves from everybody. It's a very different mentality compared to the tough-guy feel I got from other schools. Students are always very helpful, polite, and generally good people. No one is looking to hurt you. The aim is to train. When Prof. Marcelo isn't in. One of his students, Shane steps up to the plate. Shane is very knowledgeable and always gives little details on how to fix your technique. If you're thinking about trying out BJJ, you should definitely give this location a chance at earning your business. You stand to gain a lot. read more

They have nice teachers but the company is horrid and doesn't care about their students. My son was being bullied in class so I spoke to one of the teachers and we took a week break. When we returned the same kid was bullying my son again- I brought again to their attention and nothing was ever done- I decided to take a break over the summer and then stop all together for the sake of my child. They continued to charge me for 3 months for us not attending- this is after we had already been going for a year. I would not recommend this place at all. read more
