I had a million inane questions and concerns; he answered all of them. We narrowed the list to three 5-ton options. The most expensive one was of my choosing, an American Standard unit, and the other two were a Rheem and a GrandAire (which I hadn't heard of before, it's a subsidiary of Carrier). He recommended strongly that I go with the cheapest one, the GrandAire. He was absolutely correct! It saved thousands of dollars, and it works extremely well. He added a new Nest thermostat, as well. I couldn't be happier. The [minimum 2-year] warranty that he backs up his work with has to be one of the best. The guy that came to my house the first time, whose name was Ricky, looked at the coils of the air handler and told me that they needed cleaning. But, when he went to see the condenser and noted that the motor wasn't running, he gave me a quote for that. When I asked him about the dirty coils he would not give me a quote. He said that cleaning the coils was very expensive. I even told him to give me a quote and that I would consider it. But, he still didn't give me a quote. I told Rafael (the owner) that I did not understand why Ricky would tell me that the coils were very dirty and needed cleaning and later he said that cleaning the coils was very expensive and he refused to give me a quote for it. I explained to Rafael that I had told Ricky that I wanted the quote in order to determine whether or not I wanted to authorize the work because if it was necessary as he had told me that it was, then, I wanted to consider doing it even if it was not the direct cause of the air conditioner not working. Rafael only said that Ricky talked too much, which by itself means nothing, and he did not expand on his remark. I now realize that Ricky just had a trace of conscience and did not want to charge me for cleaning coils that didn't need cleaning and that, as he stated, was a very expensive job. But, if he had not found the real cause of the problem, he would have charged me for cleaning the coils, even though it wasn't necessary, and he would not have had any qualms about it. I told Rafael that Ricky had first said that replacing the broken motor would cost me $400.00 for the labor (my air conditioner is still under warranty for parts) and that, later, he raised it to $495.00. I, also, told Rafael that when I asked Ricky why he increased the quote by $95.00, he said that his boss (a.k.a., Rafael) had increased it. (I was with Ricky the entire time and I did not see him in communication with anyone by phone or text.) I asked Rafael if he would accept a payment of $450.00 and he said that I could pay $450.00 if I paid in cash or with Zelle. I almost agreed. But, I decided that I did not like that because I could not defend myself if the job was not done properly. So, I told him that I would do it with him for the $450.00 and that I would pay with a credit card. He agreed. Rafael sent a different guy to do the work. I do not recall his name so I will refer to him as the tech. The tech removed the motor with the encasing attached to it and off he went, supposedly, to the distributor. In the meantime, I called Rafael and asked him if the tech could give me a photo of the receipt. He said that he could give me a photo of what they give him, but, it's not a receipt. I said that it would be fine if he gave me a photo of whatever they give him. Then, when the tech gets back, he asked me if Rafael hadn't called me and I told him that I had called Rafael about getting a photo of the receipt. At this point, the tech tells me that the Rheem distributor was out of my motor but that he had an identical one in his van that he could give me. I said that I did not want the motor in his van and besides that, I would have to pay him for it and I did not want to do that when my motor was still under the manufacturer's warranty. I asked him how he got the motor in his van and he said that he got it from another customer that decided not to do the work. A minute or so later, as he was putting the motor back in its place, I said that I didn't understand how someone can agree to do the work with a company and after the part is bought change his mind. At this point, the tech did a 180° degree turn and said that the customer did do the work with him and that "as a matter of fact, he had replaced all of the parts." I couldn't believe my ears. I told him that he had just said that he had the motor in his van because the customer had changed his mind about doing the work. The tech did not back down from his new response even though he had just contradicted himself in a matter of a minute. I felt like I was in the twilight zone and I also felt quite disgusted. The ease with which this tech shamelessly lied to my face was not only insulting but it was also repugnant. I did not say anything else. He put my motor back in its place and left. I know that asking for a photo of the receipt given by the distributor saved me the headaches that I would have had if I had let the lying tech install the "motor that he had in his van," which probably would have been a cheap and refurbished piece of junk. In turn, they could have used the stats of my condenser, which they had, to get a brand new motor from the distributor at my expense. Rafael and his company, "Freezing Point Air Conditioning," totally wasted my time with his and his goons skimming and conniving.

What started as a routine AC maintenance visit turned into a nightmare. The original techs who came out seemed competent and told us our unit needed to be replaced, which we accepted. The office then quoted us $7,600 for a new unit, and we agreed. During scheduling with Victor, we were very clear about two things: we wanted the same techs back, and we needed them to bring plastic and tarping to protect our apartment. We reminded them about this multiple times. On install day, none of that happened, thanks to Victor's lack of communication. Different techs showed up with no plastic or tarping and had to leave to get it. Then, partway through the install, we noticed the new compressor looked drastically smaller than every other unit in our building. We flagged it to the tech, and only then did he realize it was the wrong type of unit entirely. The office had misquoted us on a unit that wouldn't even work for our apartment. Their fix? A new quote of $12,000. After a lot of pushing back on our end, they brought it down to $8,600 -- still more than we originally agreed to, for a mistake that was entirely theirs. Julie, the office manager, told us we were the ones who provided the incorrect information on the unit needed (not true), despite their tech servicing our unit and communicating the type of new unit to the office. We are not professionals in HVAC. They are supposed to be. Julie also refused to let us speak with anyone above her. Meanwhile, they had already drained the freon from our existing unit and refused to put it back while we waited for the correct unit to come in (we had to call and tell them they left us with no freon -- why would they bother to communicate any solution to us?). We were left without AC for an entire day. Their solution was to either come after business hours for our building (not possible) or give us a portable AC unit that couldn't come close to cooling our apartment. The next day, the correct unit arrived -- but of course, they didn't bring the thermostat we had specifically requested during scheduling (where they told us we could have any thermostat we wanted). When we offered to go buy the thermostat we actually wanted, the office refused to install anything we provided, despite never telling us they didn't have ours and just giving us whatever they had in stock. Again, zero communication. After haggling, they eventually agreed to install ours at no additional cost. Throughout all of this, the office repeatedly told us they'd "make it right" and "make us happy," all while telling us things that weren't true at every turn. This is a deeply untrustworthy company. Save yourself the money, the time, and the stress. Go anywhere else.
