Decent food. Not mind-blowing but good and very reasonably priced. I had the hand cut breaded mushrooms and the elephant ear tenderloin, the two things they claim to be known for. Both were good. I have had better mushrooms, but they were solid. The tenderloin was so huge, some bites were great others were merely ok. Fun atmosphere with airplanes hung from the ceiling. Very small, not private at all. Very friendly staff who answered questions and chatted a bit. I'd go back if I'm in the area and try some other menu items. read more

Who would've guessed? The Airport Steakhouse is actually a popular eatery in Mattoon despite the fact that this is not a commercial airport. Prices are cheap and selections from the menu are plenty but if you have to choose, go for the deep fried mushroom appetizer. This could easily be my next guilty pleasure because I could not stop munching them. Their famous elephant ear pork tenderloin sandwich deserves an honorable mention. It is pork tenderloin patty flattened to a disc the size of a rather large elephant ear and then deep fried, in between two hamburger bun. It sure is nice and crunchy but it could use a little salt. I ordered the shrimp dinner with hash browns but it's nothing great. But definitely try the fried mushrooms! read more

3 stars is the middle of both mine and my husband opinion of this place, i say 2 and he says 4 only because of the size of the tenderloin. I ordered the two piece chicken dinner all white meat which was a breast in a wing with your side of potato I got French fries a salad and a dinner roll the salad was much to be desired just plain old salad mix Iceberg simple dressing no other toppings included very bland.then my chicken came the breading tasted kind of funny almost like it was not an actual coding but maybe like a box chicken that they had just thrown in the deep fryer I did not even finish my chicken the french fries were mediocre again taste like they came out of the bag nothing special again just french fries ,the roll though was very delicious. My husbands tenderloin was very good and big, the onion rings were much to be desired as well. Over all for $23 plus a .95 conv charge for using credit card not a bad flight for a easy lunch. I generally don't give 5 stars, but this place is an exception. We both had the tenderloin with a shared basket of onion rings. After that, we washed it all down with pie. All the food was quite good and the service/hospitality was great. Others have complained about the decor and other supposed issues at Airport Steakhouse, but I'll have none of that. This place is straight-forward hospitality with good food, period. read more

I'm amazed by people criticizing this place for bland food and old-time decor. Come on folks, it's a country airport with good ole country people serving plentiful country food, and they've been doing it for decades. Airport restaurants don't make it unless the locals support them, and this place really packs them in. The big picture windows looking out on the visiting airplanes is just fine with most of us. We like the airplanes hanging from the ceiling, after all, it's an airport. I was based at O'Hare for twenty-five years, and if you think you'll find better decor and cuisine up there, then I've got some bad news for you. Oh, did I mention there's breakfast all day, and the homemade pies are spectacular? The staff is always friendly and accommodating. I've never left there hungry or unhappy. read more

Speechless... and this never happens. In town for xmas, and the family wanted to go eat at the Airport, I had never been, but was told the food was good and the portions big. I was in. First up, Fried Breaded Mushrooms. Could these have been better.. NO. They were perfect, lightly salted, and served with some ranch. Deep fried battered goodness. 7 people ate 2 larger baskets. 2nd app was onion rings... now I'm not a fan of having these as a app, but I'd order and eat these alone in the dark. That's how good they were. Crip, hot, string and onion-ness. The apps alone sealed this place into my heart. I'll be back. Dinner - Now I can only write about mine, but from looking at everyone's dishes, there food was just as tasty. I ordered the Fried Chicken and why not... It was seriously the most moist, juicy crispy fried chicken I've had in a long time. It was served with a side, but the chicken was the star on my meal. I ate it all and didn't look back. That bird died for a good cause. My belly and taste buds thank you. The others in the party got elephants ears; which is the largest pork tenderloin I've ever seen breaded on a small hamburger bun. It looked amazing, and guessing tasted the same because they all ate it, a few had left overs, but with its size it's fully understandable. Hello leftovers sandwiches. Other than the building, being in the middle of nowhere, and the décor this place hits the nail on the head of one of the best places to get some grub in east central IL. This is a small place, tucked into the corner of a building at a small airport. It's not well marked on the outside of the building so you have to watch closely. The only reference I can give is that the restaurant is in the building just West of the beacon tower. (the light which goes round and round). I must admit, I was expecting something a little better when it comes to the seating, which is really nothing more than old, simple banquet tables and chairs spread around a small room. The decor is air flight related with perhaps a good tilt towards WW-II era and military craft. The wait staff are very nice, helpful and willing to accommodate your requests. As this is supposedly a steak house, I came here for just that, but I must admit I was surprised that the menu was a bit thin when it came to steak options. The menu covers the typical American food items and by the menu alone there really isn't any item listed which would make this place unique. However, as a few fellow Yelpers mentioned, the pork tenderloin (the Elephant Ear) seems to be a local favorite. Anyway, on this visit I ordered a salad, steak with shrimp and a loaded baked potato. The salad was simple, nothing special, but it was fresh. When the main meal came out, I must admit I was disappointed on several fronts. First, I thought the steak to be small and of a thin cut. The taste of the steak was okay, but nothing special. The other disappointment were the shrimp. First, I was thinking they were going to be grilled, but they ended up being battered and deep fried and I'm guessing probably out of a box and simply dumped into the fryer. They were not good and I didn't eat more than a few. The potato was also a disappointment. It wasn't that warm, and the sour cream came in a packet which I had to open and get onto the potato and same with the butter. Real, classy. The only saving grace for this meal was the chocolate pie I had for dessert. The crust was nice and flakey, and the chocolate was very creamy with just the right rich taste. For now I'm giving this establishment a 3 star rating, but they are not too far from a 2 star rating. I'm going to go back and give the elephant ear a try and then update my review and rating. read more

I can honestly say I've never had a bad meal here. And that's in roughly 40 years of eating When I was a kid this place was kind of a big deal. It's a real kick to get a take my kids there now. My oldest daughter and I used to do Saturday breakfast here. It was a lot of fun to eat and watch the planes take off and land. My last trip here was on a Sunday. I've always tried to avoid the airport on Sundays since they're usually pretty busy. However, it was just a short wait and we were seated quickly. I had two friends with me from out of town who would never eaten here. The husband had to try the breaded tenderloin of course, and the wife had the walleye platter. Both of them were amazed at how good it was and how much food they got. I really need to try to stop in here more often. Their weekday lunch specials are really good. Yep, been here. Chasing a rumor, a whim,a story in a local small town newspaper, friends and I decided to check this place out. See, I'm a sucker for local color and regional favorites. I'll try anything once. And I had to try the famous delicacy from this part of rural Illinois, the "elephant ear." Now they have them in Iowa I understand, but I've never been to Iowa. Great concept small town restaurant overlooking the local airport runway. Poor execution food was below average at best. Had their signature item, the Elephant ear pork tenderloin sandwich. It was extremely dry and had little flavor. The decor is mid 70's and not in a cute quaint way. This place needs some serious updating. As for the service, my waitress was friendly enough but not very attentive. I'm not one to give bad reviews very often. But I won't be back and suggest you bypass this place. read more

Beautiful flight over on a clear, record setting warm day in October. So many farmers out bringing in their crops that they looked like boats on a sea of various grains. Our group got a steak, the all-you-can-eat catfish, and one of the tenderloins. We also had two baskets of mushrooms. Everything was just fine been there before and I will go there again. read more

Passing through town and found this on our way home for lunch. It's not well marked outside but is on a tall sign down the street. It's an older ma and pop type establishment. Not very big but friendly. I agree with the bland reviews. Food is very much so. However with that said it's still good. We had to the famous "elephant ear pork tenderloin" it's huge but bland. However with some salt and pepper and an additional side of brown gravy it was good! We also ordered the turkey dinner special. The turkey and gravy was good with a little more flavor and complimented with yummy canned green beans that takes me back to my childhood. With a salad that was literally just a plate of lettuce. But ranch dressing was good! The clientele was more senior in age. Service was friendly and it didn't take very long to get our food. Had the Dutch apple pie with vanilla ice cream and I think that had the best flavor honestly! So good! I don't prefer bland food so that's my reason for the 3 stars. Pie is really good though! It's a very cute older ma and pop place. All that Food for $23! No bathrooms in the actual restaurant they are located right outside the front door though in the small airport building. read more
