It's always a good sign when you pull up to a restaurant and the parking lot is full. The Honey Bee Cafe is definitely a local favorite! Even though they were packed on a Tuesday at noon we were immediately greeted with a friend smile and we were seated right away. Just as soon as the tables cleared out, they were filling up again! Service was fast, friendly and attentive. Their menu is quite large and includes breakfast, lunch and dinner items. I enjoyed the country fried steak with country gravy. While the outside of this restaurant appears quite plain and unassuming. The inside is clean, cozy farmhouse atmosphere with comfortable booths and table options. We read about this cafe being rated an excellent place to dine chosen from other diners across the country so we thought we'd give it a try on our way to Springfield. It was lunchtime when we arrived, but my spouse opted for breakfast and it did not disappoint. The bacon was crispy, the eggs cooked perfectly, and the hash browns perfectly crisp to her liking. This was our second visit in a row with awful service by the pink-haired waitress. The first time our food went to the wrong table and they ate it. It took her 20 minutes to notice. This time we sat for 15 minutes without being greeted. Our food was wrong but she never came back to check on us so we didn't get the opportunity to let her know. Even when it's busy, we always feel welcome here! The food is delicious every time. The french toast is always a winner, and the eggs are consistently delicious! What a great surprise in Mattoon, IL. We are not from here and had no idea where to eat after a visit to the local hospital. Read all the good reviews and they hit the mark. That's peanut butter pie. Here's the deal... I will now rate all my future inter-personal relationships on whether or not you like this pie. I have no use for those who do not like this pie. We came to visit our son at EIU. It is family weekend and all of the popular chain restaurants were packed with a wait. We came here based on reviews. I will be honest that when we pulled in the parking lot we almost left because it looked empty. As soon as we walked it we knew it had potential. It is clean and modern inside and smelled delicious. We ordered hot wings as an appetizer and they were great! We also had pancakes, French toast ( best I ever had), fried chicken, brunch burgers, salads and soups. Everything was really good! Stopped in here for a late breakfast because of the excellent YELP reviews. We were not disappointed. They were fairly busy with several large groups (I know that kills the kitchen!), so our food took a bit longer than expected but it was really good. I had the Western Eggs Benedict that was very good. The bacon and hollandaise was especially delish. The tomato and avocado were under-fire, which for tomatoes this time of year is a sin. DH had the meat lovers omelet and he enjoyed it very much. He prefers his hash browns very crispy but he didn't order them that way so that's on him. Our friend ordered the waffle and eggs with some of their fresh squeezed orange juice and he said it was perfect. We are through Mattoon every few months so we will definitely go back!! read more

For about 2-3 years the Honey Bee has been my go to place every time we are in Mattoon, at least once a week. The service has been traffic and very fast. Plus very tasty. But the last 3 times we ate there we were eextremely disappointed. The service was extremely slow. 15 minutes before a waitress showed up. Then about another 15 minutes Another waitress 1showed up and said they lost our order. It was almost an hour from the time we got there until our food was brought to us. The girl with a the short short blonde hair was not only rude but inpatient. We walked in and immediately were not welcomed. There people at the register so we waited. the lady with short blonde hair looked into my soul and stated "what do you need" in a rude tone, not a singular other word to show that we welcomed. they stated that our foot would ready in five minutes. we stood there for 10-15 minutes.
