From what I could tell on my limited experience here, it's efficiently run. The gates are split between two areas, so you have to go through the security to group of gates, and can't access the other side without exiting and going through the other security section. The planes are boarded and deboarded with stairs directly outside, rather than through a jet bridge. Luckily coming and going, the weather was nice, if it were rainy or stormy, it would be a bad time to get on or off plane for sure. My gate area had a Dunkin, a Hudson News and bar with a small kitchen. There was plenty of seating by the gates, mainly because they only have a plane leaving every few hours, so not to overfilled with other travelers. Overall, good experience and I'm sure I'll be back, though their flight destination list is pretty limited, luckily PTI/GSO is one of them.

The tickets felt a little expensive at $36 per person given the brevity of the experience and the infrequency of the pickups and dropoffs. We rode the river route up to Armature/Ulele, and the tour was an entertaining (albeit short) 15 minute ride. We ended up exploring the fantastic river walk down to the gorgeous U of Tampa campus before catching a returning taxi about an hour later. During one of the dockings, there was an unfortunate incident that almost tanked the evening. Something went awry, and the fire hose next to me started spraying at a high volume. I ended up soaking wet from head to toe on a cool winter evening. The captain and staff were apologetic, and I ended up with a couple of beers on the house, so we went ahead with the longer Island loop route. This trip was a pleasant cruise. It's a lot longer than the river route, but there are not a ton of points of interest (mainly some mansions and heavy industrial areas). The vibes were good - what's not to like about a cruising on the water with a cold drink and an entertaining tour guide. Ultimately, my sons ended up enjoying the water taxi and telling me it was a highlight of our trip. We loved the Armature and Ulele stop and ended up going back there for dinner and dessert. I didn't love the price and the incident that happened on board, but this was a good experience overall.

Most people never really knows what they did apart from protecting our shores from drug smuggling, etc. but imagine my surprise when I was at the Mohammed Al-Ahmad Kuwait Naval Base one day and looked up and saw a U.S. Coast Guard military police...I was like what you guys doing here LOL :) The Coast Guard is one of our nation's five military services. (yes yes 5 because we have to include the Air Force LOL) my brothers and sisters in arms will get that joke. The Coast Guard is the only military branch that falls within the Department of Homeland Security. On an average day, the Coast Guard: Conducts 45 search and rescue cases; saves 10 lives; seizes 874 pounds of cocaine and 214 pounds of marijuana; conducts 57 waterborne patrols of critical maritime infrastructure; interdicts 17 illegal migrants; screens 360 merchant vessels for potential security threats prior to arrival in U.S. ports. This past week our group had the incredible opportunity to take a behind-the-scenes tour of the US Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater military base, and learn about the services provided by these amazing people. First of all the air station is located adjacent to the St. Petersburg - Clearwater International Airport. Those of you who live and work in the vicinity will certainly be familiar with the large orange and white military cargo planes and helicopters that take off and land on this corner of the airfield. Air Station Clearwater is the largest and busiest Air Station for the entire US Coast Guard. In addition to their local area of responsibility along the west coast of Florida, their Area of Operations includes the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean basin, and the Bahamas. The pilots of Air Station Clearwater also have coverage overlay for the entire 7th District of the Coast Guard, and have supported many missions including assistance for Hurricane Katrina, the BP oil spill, and Super Storm Sandy. We started our tour with an overview discussion of the Coast Guard, and learned that the U.S. Coast Guard is one of the five armed forces of the United States and the only military organization within the Department of Homeland Security. Since 1790 the Coast Guard has safeguarded our Nation's maritime interests and environment around the world. In addition to the traditional Search and Rescue missions of the Coast Guard, Air Station Clearwater is also involved with anti-drug and migrant smuggling operations, and provides air support for joint military functions throughout the Caribbean basin. Our tour guide for the afternoon was Lt. DeAngelo who is a veteran USCG C-130 pilot; and he shared a tremendous number of stories and fun anecdotes with our group as we moved from the briefing room out onto the actual air field. We started inside the hanger where the C-130 planes receive their regular maintenance, and he walked us around one of the planes to point out specific features of these big beasts. At the end of the walk-around we were standing at the tail end of the plane, where the cargo ramp was down. "Would we like to climb aboard and sit in the cockpit?" This would be the point where we all started bouncing around like excited school children.... Sure enough he marched us up the cargo ramp into the belly of the plane and showed us how they strap down search and rescue gear and pallets of supplies, and then allowed us to move up into the cockpit where he explained the controls and talked about many of his past missions. From there we moved into the Flight Operations office to have a better understanding of the logistical efforts involved in managing their daily operations, and then it was on to meet with some of the helicopter rescue swimmers. These are the guys that jump out of perfectly good helicopters to assist stranded boaters. Some truly amazing stories from these guys! Our last stop was the hanger where they perform maintenance on the MH-60 medium-range recovery helicopters, better known as the Jayhawks. These rotary wing aircraft are about 65 feet long, and carry a crew of four (including the rescue swimmer / EMT). Once again we were allowed to climb around on the aircraft, and get a first-hand feel for sitting in the rear with the hoist basket and all of the medical supplies. Truly an amazing experience to see the aircraft and talk with the people that protect our coastlines.
