It was our last…read moreday in Rome and since we wanted seafood, we thought that a Sardinian restaurant would be a good choice. Lucky us to have chosen Eleonora d'Arborea. Located in an outer neighborhood (you can take a bus from Pizazza Venezia to within a couple of blocks of the restaurant), we had a late reservation but entered to find the comfortable main rooms still active and lively. When our waiter realized we spoke English, he sought out the owner who helped us navigate the large menu of choices and with his encouragement, we made a meal of primarily the restaurant's starters. We had crudos and tartares, raw clams, and plates of fish and vegetables. The food was extraordinary. Probably the best seafood I've ever had, and I grew up on the New England coast and now live in NYC -- I think I know fish. We also enjoyed a delicious Sardinian wine and ended the meal with the owner's treat of two small glasses of a strawberry liqueur, house-made. Our only regret was that it was our last day in Rome and couldn't return to try more things on the menu. We appreciated the restaurant's friendliness, helpful service, and most of all, the superb fish and shellfish. If I can't travel to Sardinia, I can only hope to return soon to Rome so we can eat at Eleonara d'Arborea again.

Gone was the Sardinian family, the raffish atmoshere, and the extensive and superb seafood menu. Through the gracious staff tried to accommodate us, and assure us that the now weighty menu would satisfy, and indeed some dishes were quite delicious, especially the Insalata di Mare and the Spaghetti alla Vernaccia. The Rombo con Patate of last year (see photo) was nothing short of a disaster. I will not describe it further. We left the plate, got our bill and took our car back to our hotel. The people I was with got lobster linguini (which was pretty good!) and the trout with potatoes which was yummy. They definitely have some heavy dishes but it's very easy to eat lighter here and still feel satisfied which is always good! I also got some fruit for dessert which was so fresh and sweet! After the Focaccia I decided to stay on theme and went with the Fettuccine al tartufo nero e porcini (fettuccine black truffle & porcini mushrooms). Holy cow, a delicious culinary delight. Some other hits of the table included the beef fillet with green pepper sauce & Digione mustard. Astice grigliato, verdure al vapore e maionese alla curcuma (Grilled lobster with steamed veggies in a mayonnaise turmeric sauce and a Lasagna, tartufo nero, funghi, mozzarella e grana (lasagna with blach truffle, mushrooms, mozzarella and Parmesan cheese) All were just amazing. My friend ordered a pork dish and she said it was the best pork she had. My sister and another friend ordered the mussels and again the best! She also had pawns on some type of alcohol (spacing on type) and phenomenal. I had calamari and shrimp and a seafood pasta and enjoyed both. Honestly I dream about their calamari and shrimp dish.
