We all know Michael's is almost the home for some painting supplies, needlework tools, seasonal…read moreitems, faux branches, picture frames, ribbons- which I've gotten plenty of, scrapbooking- you name it, these folks have almost any crafty item imaginable. And as a result of that, Michael's has been a one-stop shop for such things when I want to do something at home or work. The Sunday I came to this Kingston, NY location at Kings Mall, I picked up a glass+black frame for a deckle edge art piece my daughter had gotten hubs. The layout here is bigger than most Michael's I've been to, prices of course, are reasonable and I can use my educator's discount on top of what I buy.

Merchandise changes with the seasons, so you can always find fresh gifts and goods. A standard item includes Beam watercolor paints, one of my favorite addictions. They also do screen printing lessons and other analog adventures so you can harness your creative vision in a way that is rare to find these days. It's well worth the 5-minute walk off of Broadway. It's a not-so-hidden gem.

But then, after they framed it (beautifully) Renee noticed that the yellow in the frame was off from the yellow we'd been shown. It was a greener yellow. Many of Renee's clients are professionals in the arts, including curators who bring their work to her from Manhattan as do many non professionals. When Joann's in Kingston, NY shut down, two of the longtime employees put their heads and hearts together and opened Frugal Fabrics on Ulster Avenue. This isn't your typical fabric store- big box or otherwise. What sets Frugal apart is that these ladies accept some fabrics as donations and sell. But don't mistake that for low quality. The fabric selection here is impressive AND affordable. While my home leans neutral with rustic woods, concrete and stone, I love to funktify it with pops of color. I don't sew, but I do love beautiful fabric and walking into Frugal F. felt like heaven. The colors, the heft, the textures- especially the pieces I picked up, were delicious. It's a hidden gem for crafters and quilters- neither of which I am, but I'm so glad I came here- plus these ladies know their stuff.
