Wow ! Not only is the food amazing, the views are breathtaking! The owner was welcoming and staff were attentive! Everything was perfect !

Booked the terrace for our anniversary. Showed up, got told the terrace was "closed," and were informed we'd be charged if we rescheduled to a night it was open. Then spent our entire anniversary dinner watching a private party of "preferential" guests enjoy the terrace we'd reserved. Nothing says "special occasion" like being visibly deprioritized in favor of another party where there were at least 5-8 tables open on the terrace. A heads-up email would have gone a long way. The food was fine, but I've had this exact meal in New York without being treated like a second-class guest. If you're coming for the view, know that "confirmed" apparently means "unless someone better shows up. read more

Where do I even start. I guess this place got really popular from TikTok and a friend wanted to go based on that. Little did we realize TikTok folks have sense of taste. The beef tartare was off putting and gave me an impression of what dog food would be like. The special zucchini flower was way too watery and overpriced for what it was. The flambé was just over powered by the mustard flavors and was cooked unevenly. For the price point you'd think it would be more refined. The saving grace for this review and only reason I gave it a 2 stars was that service was not bad and the sautéed mushrooms. We should have gotten that as a risotto or pasta. We could have eaten that all night. Overall for the price point of this place we do not recommend unless you're trying your hand at influencer life who have no taste buds. read more

I have very mixed feelings about the restaurant and suite experience: Positives: 1. THE VIEW - amazing, gorgeous during sunset, the wow factor is there 2. The room - luxurious room, very homey, loved the bathroom especially the shower 3. The owner - saved our trip by ordering a last minute taxi and helping us retrieve a forgotten phone, very accommodating, ensured we were satisfied with everything 4. The food - the food was good! (not great) but good Negatives: 1. Room was aired out and filled with bugs, I mean spiders like 10-15 spiders (some were daddy long legs which don't bother me but we had 2 fat huge brown spiders that were above our bed that we had to kill before sleeping to rest easy) 2. Expensive - we got charged 34 euros for 4 zucchini flowers that were off the menu felt very taken advantage of 3. Al Veluu came as a highly recommended restaurant and it was such a disappointment. My bf and I came here for our first night of vacation dinner, it's important to note, we're 26. When we first arrived the server gave us our menus and quickly took our orders, I found it strange that they didn't offer specials with such a limited menu, but no big deal. We ordered filet for dinner for 2, "cooked table-side" (according to the menu) for $100. About 20 minutes after we were sat another older American couple (probably late 40s) was sat next to us and we overheard the waiter listing a round of specials. Initially just disappointed we didn't hear them, we assumed the server forgot (happens!). They also ordered the steak dinner for two. When our steaks came out, i was surprised they weren't cooked tableside as the menu said, but they were decent and we were modestly happy with them. However, when the older American couples steaks began to be actually cooked table side, we were VERY confused. For one, why were theirs cooked table side and ours weren't? And then we saw their steaks. The size and quality difference in the cuts of meat we were served was night and day. While we were served small/thinner (4-6oz) serlions, they were served HUGE thick filets (8-10oz). At this point we were SO CONFUSED and should have said something but we had finished our meal, been there for 2 hours and wanted dessert and to leave. The tiramisu was fantastic. Finally, they offered to call us a cab which we accepted, except we wouldn't have if we knew it would take over an hour to arrive and we watched 4 other tables get priority and their cabs were called after ours, picked them up first. Again, could have been down to situation except we were all staying in the same hotel .5 a mile away. My bf and I felt like the staff saw a young couple and assumed we either didn't have money or didn't know what to expect of a high class restaurant experience. I don't do business with people who lie or steal. Dishonesty ruined an otherwise nice evening. My meal was reasonably good, my wife was a little less happy with her food. But, the view was truly spectacular, and the owner was charming. As I have learned many times in life, charm does not mean honest. After an excellent local red wine with dinner, we thought we might have a glass of white wine with dessert. Marina asked for "the best." The waiter said that there was a wonderful Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Grigio, so we said we would try a taste of each. Instead of pouring a taste, he poured us a glass of each. We didn't like them and returned them. No big deal. The first peculiarity was that they said my Amex was declined; I later learned that they had not tried charging the bill on my Amex. Anyway, I offered my Visa; the owner said, "much better ... we don't like Amex." More honest would be to simply not accept Amex. At that point I wasn't aware he had already lied to me once. After paying the bill and leaving a tip, my wife suggested that I look at the bill. I discovered that the wine was charged, even though that we were not offered a taste first, and didn't like the wines once they were poured. The charge was only €20. No wonder the wine wasn't particularly nice. Anyway, I was still in a good mood, and told the waiter that had charged us for the wine that we hadn't consumed, and asked him to please refund the €20. As the full bill was over €600 for the two of us, it never even occurred to me that they would say no. But, the waiter said this was not possible. I then asked to speak to the owner, who told me that the charge had already been processed and that altering it was impossible. Total rubbish ... it takes a few seconds to run through a credit. I said that if they did not want to credit the wine, I would like a refund on my tip. Again, he said that was impossible. As I was becoming angry, he said he could refund the €20 for the wine. So, a refund was obviously possible; he knew he'd been lying. I said that, at this stage, he'd decided that I had to pay for the wine, and that he was entitled to do so. But, under the circumstance, no tip was justified, and that I'd be happy to have the tip refunded. Again, he said that was impossible. The tip was far larger that the price of the wine, which was his real reason for refusing. Refusing to refund a tip, when the service has become unpleasant, is a form of stealing (refusing to credit the wine is not stealing, though it's a stupid business decision). I said I would contest the charge with the credit card company. He said I could do whatever I wanted, he didn't care. Anyway, a stupid decision to not cancel a small charge for mediocre wine, followed by a series of lies and refusal to refund the tip ruined an otherwise lovely evening. I'm sure the owner thinks I'm being petty, which on one level I am, but I don't tolerate lying, and certainly don't tolerate stealing. read more

Food is just okay, would suggest going to other places... feeling very mixed about this as I saw people raving about it online and was sadly so disappointed. We went quite out of our way to get up the hill and have dinner here just to have poor service, unflavorful food (don't get the steak) and a steep bill. While the food was good, the service was horrible and the prices we paid that evening for the level of service was just wrong. My main complaint is that the server was rude when we brought up the issues we had with our meal. His service overall that evening was not good, but when we voiced our frustrations when the bill came, he was extremely rude. I regret booking a reservation here. We ordered two appetizers and four entrees. The appetizers came out and were delicious. An older woman brought our entrees out and she only brought three of the four entrees. This is where the entire meal fell apart. When we finally got the server over to the table, he pointed to the food and said "this isn't right" and walked away, so we assumed all the food was not right and we didn't eat it. My husband never got his meal, so we let the 3 incorrect dishes just sit on the table and eventually let another server take them away as we waited for the food we ordered to come out. About 30 minutes later my husband's fish finally came to the table and one other pasta dish arrived as well. The waiter never came to the table to check on us to make sure everything was okay. We were so confused as to where the other two dishes were and why our food wouldn't come out at the same time as the other guests we were dining with. We were frustrated to find out that we had allowed a server to take away dishes that were indeed ours but we thought were incorrect due to the server saying "this isn't right." It was honestly a mess. We didn't eat together with our guests. We were confused and left our meal hungry. We had thought that the server was offering us a free burrata dish to help make up for the mistake, but he indeed charged us for it instead. It felt as though we were upsold, and did not get the service or meal we paid for or planned for! I am so frustrated by the entire experience. read more

Ignore bad reviews ! If you don't love this place, there is something wrong with you, not the restaurant. This is as good as Italy will ever get! The views are heaven on earth. If all I ate was bread and olive oil, I would still be happy here. Amazing, Romantic, once in a lifetime. The food magnificent. We had the Zucchini Flower Appetizer, the Veal chop for 2 (Amazing), side salad, dessert, coffees. Wonderful place. $200.00 bill was low compared to US restaurants of this caliber. TERRIBLE experience. Been to Italy multiple times with fantastic food experiences every single time. We've been out in NYC to some of the best restaurants and know good service. This is NOT it. Experience started with owner taking my wife's water bottle from her hands and saying we don't do plastic here and poured it in the plants. We sit down and order asparagus soup and he comes out with asparagus plate instead. We told him that's not what he ordered and he just put the plate down and didn't even ask to exchange it. Let's not forget there was one waiter for four tables. His name is Luca. He is an an ASSHOLE. Wouldn't touch this place with a ten foot pole. We had a driver that he set up and he said the driver was outside and that everything was fine. An hour goes by where we have to force him to give us the check. We walk outside and the driver said he was there for an hour and a half and that Luca said we were holding him up. Meanwhile we were trying to leave and this guy wouldn't let us leave. To sum things up, food and view good, but service doesn't make it worth it. Service was equivalent to someone spitting on your face upon walking in the door. Ate here for a wedding rehearsal dinner, the food and service was great! The fig was memorable, the triffle tiramisu was delicious, the wines were good, the Fish Al veluu was good. Everything that was served was delicious. The views were incredible, especially at night. Highly recommend eating outside if you can get a table on the rim. read more

I absolutely love this restaurant, no matter what I eat. The steaks are the best you'll ever taste, but I love the fish, as well. The WORST SERVICE I've ever had, truly. We spent almost $300 euro on a meal where they never came to refill our wine or water - we had a bottle and kept having to ask for more when our glasses had been empty for 10+ minutes. But probably the worst part about the meal was ordering the risotto Al Veluu where they bring it out in the pot and serve you a little bit and say we'll heat it up for you when you want more... only they never came back to ask if we wanted more so when we eventually asked for more they gaslighted us by saying, "you already finished it." How have I not reviewed Al Veluu?! I have had the pleasure of dining here 3 times now. Once, when planning my wedding, the second was the welcome dinner for my wedding and the third was last night. Views of the lake are astounding. The hosts Cheryl and Luca, welcome you as if it is their own home. Food is spectacular. The following is the menu I had for my welcome dinner and again last night: -Bresaola air dried beef with sliced celery, Parmesan shavings and mixed leafs salad from our kitchen garden, -Bis of pasta, penne al Veluu and trofie -Involtini don Antonio beef parcels cooked on the grill stuffed with mozzarella and herbs -fried zucchini as side order -tiramisu with fresh fruit berries It's worth noting they have their own garden where they grow fruits and vegetables used in the cooking. We had local wines that were superb. Service is perfectly paced. Do not miss this fabulous restaurant if you come to Lake Como! read more

I went for the Asparagus and I'm glad I did. The restaurant is a bit up the hill but the view is a worthwhile reward. It started off with assorted salami and each was tasty, some hot. Next was blanched asparagus with a balsamic- basic and delicious. After was polenta -which I never like- but I enjoyed toasted chips inside. Fourth was asparagus hollandaise- the best part of my meal. Finally cheese and then a strawberry desert. The Prix included an aperitif, white and red wine, a cappuccino and a grapa. read more

I rarely write reviews -- Generally not worth my time or energy. Here is an unfortunate aberration. I am writing this because I feel compelled to let others know how completely upsetting this dinner experience was. I made reservations for Al Veluu over a month in advance, speaking to the "son of the former owners" who said I secured the terrace for dinner. The same manager called me to confirm the reservation the day of, and oddly asked me what hotel I was staying at. I did not think much of the question until we arrived at the restaurant and had been placed in a canopied room far from the terrace, next to a wood-burning oven on a 85 degree evening with no view. Racking my brain to try to figure what had happened after speaking to the hostess and the manager about how I made specific arrangements several weeks before, it finally dawned on me: Foolishly, I made the mistake of letting the owner know I was staying at not the most expensive/best hotel at Lake Como when he called to confirm the reservation. And he, in turn, downgraded the experience for us thinking we would not have enough money to spend on the meal, and be deserving of the "good seats." I know this because I was at the Grand Tremezzo hotel before dining at Al Veluu for drinks and saw three separate couples from that hotel be sat on the terrace after we had arrived. I highly doubt they had tried to make the same arrangements I did prior to the visit, but the perceived wealth seemed to be the deciding factor. I have never felt so judged or shamed in my life -- sounds dramatic but the owner of this restaurant seriously leveled me and I do not wish this type of experience on anyone else visiting Lake Como. Other notes: the food was mediocre. The best dish was the pesto and meat pasta. The server tried to sneak in a 2017 vintage of wine when we ordered a 2016 thinking we would not see the label (just to add some insult-to-injury icing on top). The steak tartare tasted ranked, semi masked by a massive amount of luke warm grey poupon mustard. I give it a D minus. The cut of the meat we received for one of our main courses was so fatty and tendoiny, half of it was inedible. Let's give it a C plus. Net net, I would not come here unless you are hoping to spend your evening with rude people and eating below average food. If you are however, looking for your ego to get knocked through fairly antiquated, though generously performed executions of marginalization, this is definitely your spot. Seriously this was such a Julia Robert's moment from the movie Pretty Woman. At the end of the day, there is a ton of bad stuff happening in the world and a bad meal pales in comparison to a lot that is going on. That said, having lived in Manhattan for 12 years, I always thought food and hospitality to be the great equalizers. It saddens me that the owner of Al Veluu would not allow me, and probably others, to take part in what could have been a better experience. I wish he had told me that were no reservations available when I called over a month ago instead of smothering my face in his disheartening bias and subpar food. Do not come here. I was fortunate enough to check this place out when my husband and I vacationed in Italy. The hotel where we were visiting recommended this place and it did not disappoint. The owner was very kind and accommodating. Everything served here is prepared on site. The vegetables are grown by the owner in his garden. We had zucchini fries and roasted asparagus. Both the zucchini and asparagus were plucked from the garden that day. The pastas are made by hand. The view from our table was absolutely breathtaking. We were able to watch an incredible sunset while eating one of the most authentic and thoughtfully prepared Italian meals. Also, I noticed that many locals dine here as well, proving that it is not a tourist trap. I highly recommend having a reservation and asking for a table with a window view. Also, if you are from out of town and are not renting a car, you will need to arrange for transportation, as this place is not accessible by foot. A++++++++ to this spot. We all came here for a welcome dinner for a wedding in Lake Como and the view was SPECTACULAR. You can see all of Lenno and the surrounding cities. The food was amazing. We had the pasta and the steak which was very good. There is indoor and outdoor seating at the restaurant. I strongly suggest coming here if you are in the area. I don't know if they are open for lunch but check it out and call in advance. There is parking at the bottom of the restaurant so no need to worry about that. read more

This is our favorite restaurant in Lake Como. We had been there many times in past but hadn't been there in quite some time. We were so excited to get back, and the hosts, Luca and his wife, were as gracious as ever and remembered us. The food was amazing and the zucchini flowers were to die for. We've been to Al Veluu twice before, and with fond anticipation, we chose it for my birthday. We took the short ferry trip from Bellagio, and Luca the owner picked us up in his BMW. (Make sure, you have advance arrangements.) The view of Lago Como is world beating, even on a cloudy late September day. But so is the food. We sat on the terrace, and took Luca's suggestions: First, lightly fried zucchini flowers were delicious. Our main course was veal medallions in porcini mushrooms and a sauce -- possibly the best of this kind of dish as we've ever had. Had a nice half-bottle of Gavi white wine, with a pleasant astringency. A light panna cotta was a perfect ending. All of the vegetables come from Al Veluu's own gardens. This is a very lovely restaurant high up in the hills overlooking the lake. The food is all freshly prepared and quite tasty. However, I would not return. The portions are extremely small and if you are hungry when you enter, you will remain hungry when you leave. The portions are all very small, even smaller than a child's portions. Because the portions are small, I believe the prices are far too expensive. In addition, while it is nice that it is a family run establishment, that means the service is poor. It takes a very long time to get your food and even longer to get the check. My personal opinion, as you're better off with a small, bustling local place and skip the view. read more

They have an excellent wine list, topped only by a fabulous menu. It was all fresh, like farm to table, and we loved our dinner as well as the wonderful selection of desserts. Nightmare! SCAM! We called in advance and made a reservation for two nights later. They asked for a credit card to confirm. Happy to do so as we knew we would be present for the reservation. When we showed up for the reservation Luca, the gentleman we made the reservation with, had mistakenly misunderstood the reservation and put it down for the previous night. He had charged us $40pp for 6 people when we didn't show on the night he had written down in error, when our reservation had only been for 4 people all along!!! We looked at the reservation sheet which showed us as the only group that had a credit card number written down next to the reservation. Scam! He had our phone number and never called to ask where we were. He then proceeded to say he wouldn't seat us for the time we actually made the reservation for and sent us away. Luca was beyond rude and defensive. A simple mistake/miscommunication which could have easily been discussed and resolved amicably. Never had this experience before in my life. I would highly suggest NEVER visiting this restaurant- one of the worst experiences. No way to treat people! read more
