this rest area is on the north side of the interstate about halfway from the Triangle and the Triad heading south on I-85 and provides an opportunity to attend to life's indignities with some dignity. there's plenty of spots for cars and trucks to park plus a twisty bit after the car park that makes it easy for even the novice to get her trailer out of harm's way. in time a few bulbs over the parking lot may fade or burn out entirely, meanwhile continue to deploy your windshield screens when napping but do not stay overnight. facilities are clean and the potties abundant, the grounds and buildings are similarly tidy as is the vending area so please help keep it that way. be advised that the actual map at this rest area incorrectly indicates the northbound rest area as seen in Ann H.'s picture from Sep 2022 and it's the other way around on the map over there -- probably the work of an aspiring Yelp fact checker because, well, you'll see for yourself soon enough read more

Traveling through on the i40 and had to make a stop. There is plenty of parking even with a lot others resting. The facilities were immaculate! Super clean. Large capacity bathrooms for both genders. There is a vending machine as well. Lots of picnic tables and some beautiful trees where some beautiful birds were "singing". Trash and recycling cans available. read more

The Alamance County Rest Stop is one of the nicer rest areas. The design is a little smaller than the others but still plenty of areas to walk around with all of the trees. We stopped at this rest area to take a restroom break during our drive from Asheville to Chapel Hill. Compared to other North Carolina rest areas I've been to in recent years, this one on I-85 north / I-40 east in Alamance County has been the most memorable because of its landscaping and water elements. There's a rock waterfall - which I believe is a relatively recent addition (within the last couple years) - and a small courtyard fountain. Up to this point, I haven't been to another rest area that's as well-decorated. I'm not sure if the corresponding rest area on the other side (I-85 south / I-40 west) is as nice. Overall, the grounds and facilities were clean and appeared properly maintained. The men's room was clean and the area felt safe. This is a good rest area. This is the only rest area between the Piedmont Triad (Greensboro, High Point, Winston-Salem) and the Research Triangle (Chapel Hill, Durham, Raleigh). It's located between exits 138 (NC 61 - Gibsonville) and 140 (University Drive - Elon), on the west side of Burlington. On this overlapped stretch of I-85 and I-40, the I-85 exit numbers prevail. This location has vending machines. I saw at least one uniformed employee on-site. According to the NC DOT's website (https://www.ncdot.gov/travel-maps/traffic-travel/rest-areas/Pages/default.aspx), this rest area is located at milepost 139. It has parking spaces for 75 cars, 10 car/trailers, and 22 trucks. It opened in 1983 and was renovated in 2005. read more

This is specifically for the Alamance County Rest Area for Interstate 40 East / Interstate 85 North. This is separate from the other rest area for the opposite direction as they are two distinct rest areas. My most recent visit here was on July 30, 2021. While making my way home back to Virginia Beach, it was time to take a break. Those are definitely needed when on the road for a long period of time. When you first come into the rest area, there are separate directions to go in for trucks and cars. Of course, I was in a car. The rest area looked really nice at first glance and it wasn't that busy at the time of the stop too. Ultimately, the first stop was to use the restroom. Generally, all of the NC rest areas are really good about keeping them clean and well maintained, and this was no different here. After taking care of that business, some time was taken to look around the rest area and move a bit before getting back in the car again. It was nice to move around the grounds of the rest area and take in some of the sights that they have at this location. They have a rock fountain not too far outside the main building where the restrooms are located. There are plenty of picnic tables, both covered and uncovered, along with lots of trees and greenery. Another thing that I like is that they have both trash cans and recycling cans to use. Not too far from the main building you will find a separate building for vending to get drinks and snacks to take along the road as well. Overall, this was a great rest area. It was well maintained and managed. There is plenty of open space to stretch those legs and take a break. Restrooms and buildings were clean. What more could you really ask for at a rest area? If your travels take you this way, you should definitely take a break here, even if it's just for a little bit. read more

Perfectly adequate rest area in North Carolina where things are clean and you can have a nap and it's pretty safe. It can get a little busy but then so can your mother's bedroom. Stopped there traveling by myself. Of course there was a rude attendant there who didn't care that yes although there was a sign, I didn't notice it and didn't want to leave my dog in the hot car while I used the restroom. So taking my dog in with me is frowned upon, but leaving a dog in the hot car is frowned upon. What are people to do. Some people need to get a life! read more

A good spot to rest from a couple of hours of intense highway driving. I had to relax my middle finger after flipping off so many highway morons. That little stalk on your steering wheel column? It's not going to bite you, I promise. Do your highway neighbors a favor and SIGNAL when you're changing lanes. Ugh! Anyway, I stopped here and managed to get a half hour nap. Very few parking spaces are in any sort of dark area away from the overhead lights. I suppose this is intentional, but when you want to be out of the light for sleepy time, it's a bummer. read more

After several stops at other rest areas missing these basic necessities it makes one appreciate these when available. No complaints here. NC's rest areas are really quite lovely! I've seen a lot of rest areas, from simple pull outs to entire history museums, and the ones in NC are top notch! I think I've seen only one other rest area with a water feature. There are separate buildings for the bathrooms and the vending machines here, and everything is clean and well maintained. There's lots of grassy areas for stretching human and dog legs, and picnic tables and benches aplenty! Very well done! read more

A separate, enclosed vending area with hot and cold drinks, sandwiches, and other dietary/food items.
