I'm not a small guy. One of the few things I know in Hindi is "ati maha" (really big) which describes my midsection pretty well. Many traditional Indian garments do not fit me without some work. My wife and I had 9 different outfits tailored for a wedding, and Alankar did a superb job with all of them. One piece was not ready when we arrived, and he got on the phone to his other seamstress and had it delivered within 15 minutes. He made sure everything fit well, and his sewing work in moving trim, buttons and re-hemming pieces was first rate. His cost is about 1/4 of getting this done elsewhere. You have to be patient but he does good work for the time and money. read more

The measurement guy barely looked at the hem without even marking off or writing down anything and as predicted tailor took off 1 in instead of 3in off the bottom of my dress. There are so many different tailors one can find in Edison but there was one I was recommended. Driving down Laguardia Ave, parallel to Oak Tree Road, I was able to find the tiny parking lot leading to the entrance of Alankar. Inside you'll find someone to take your order and measurements, while three people inside sew. There are pre-stitched blouses that are gorgeous but you'll pay close to ~$100 for them. When you go in with your materials (i.e. fabric), a man behind the counter to go over the design you want and then take your measurements. He'll give you a piece of paper afterwards that corresponds to your ticket number. Although paper signs inside suggest a cash payment prior to your order, you can come back and pay with cash when you come to pick up. Depending on your order, I was able to pick up my blouses after two weeks. When I went in, I handed him my ticket number for him to find my order, paid the cash and tried on the blouses. If there are any minor adjustments to make, a seamstress is right there to take in the bust a few inches so you're ready to walk out the door with your items. I found the measurements are a bit generic so that when I did go to pick up my items, there were quite a few areas they had to go back and tighten (i.e. the bust area and the arms) which seemed to be a pattern since I went with three other people. The owner lies about completion dates. Brought in items over a month ago. Asked about getting the completed date moved up by one day. He said not a problem, that it would likely be ready long before that. Here we are, a month later and now he's telling us the completion date is being pushed back again. He's missed the deadlines he's set for himself. He just promised to send the items overnight to us in a couple days, and we will be calling every hour until he sends us the tracking number. I had multiple Indian events coming up (weddings, anniversary parties, etc) and needed to alter a sari blouse and "pre-stitch" or "pre-pleat" a couple of saris. When a sari is pre-stitched, there is no wrapping and pleating of the yards of cloth; Just clip and go. Deceivingly proper and traditional for all you lazy bums out there. With no luck finding a reviewed South Asian tailor online or on Yelp (post them, Yelpers!), I ventured into Oak Tree Road to fully embrace my brownness. I was immediately directed to Alankar Tailor by a nearby store owner. Alankar Tailor specializes in alterating or custom-making South Asian outfits (saris, lehngas, sari blouses, salwar kameez, etc). The mailing address is on Oak Tree Road, but it's actually only approachable from Laguardia Avenue (I would put "44 Laguardia Ave" on my GPS). There is a tiny white hut in the back of a small parking lot with almost unnoticeable signs indicating "tailor" or "alterations". Ashok at Alankar Tailor got the job done. He is fluent in Hindi, Gujurati, and English, for those of you who can be intimidated by language barriers. But having been spoiled by inexpensive and fabulous tailors in the motherland, I was not completely impressed. I would advise you to check your blouses or saris before you take them home (I noticed one of the clips missing on a pre-pleated sari) and to make sure the outfit is fit/adjusted to your taste (my altered blouse was a little bit looser than I liked). They take anywhere from 1-2 weeks. Pre-stitching costs $25. A blouse adjustment was $5 for me (depends on how much is altered). It does beat booking a 2-week $1100 trip to India to get your clothing taken care of, though. read more

2 stars because these guys are good tailors. My sari blouses came out well. On the other hand, they are a disaster to deal with - impossibly disorganized. The last time I was here, a customer was REALLY upset after these guys lost a very expensive sari of hers. The woman working behind the counter - their tailor, I think - barely spoke a word of English and just smiled at her very unhappy customer. My personal experiences - I almost left behind a very expensive sari because they didn't include it with the blouses I was picking up (why would it be held separately?). I literally had to go behind the counter myself to find the sari as the woman (the tailor) could not find it. That does not inspire confidence in a customer. I could probably have dealt with that level of incompetence because I am too lazy to find another tailor, but then this second experience occurred. Today, I called them to ask where my bridesmaids' blouses were for my wedding. Turns out, they hadn't mailed me the blouses (my wedding is TWO WEEKS AWAY) because they had forgotten to get payment from me while I was in the store. I asked if I could mail a check - he said no, "just cash or money order." Dude, make it easy for your customers to do business with you. If you'll only accept cash, then ask me for cash when I tell you to MAIL me my blouses - because clearly I cannot give you cash from hundreds of miles away. Now, my MIL has to go down to the store to pick up my blouses, and my bridesmaids have to get their blouses from her. Irritating for all parties involved. Overall, not happy with this tailor. I went to Binny's down the street for another blouse and the experience was 100% easy - paid cash up front, it was $5 cheaper, blouse came out perfectly and was ready on the scheduled day. We gave the owner fabric to make a simple blouse associated with a very expensive lenga I bought for my Mom for my Wedding coming up in a few weeks, he completely butchered the job! Extremely, extremely rude and unprofessional. Has the audacity to ask the customer to pay the entire amount upfront without finishing the work. And on top of that has no decency to have a simple conversation. We had got the length of a few pairs of jeans...once it was done we asked him to check if he had done it as per the agreed measurements, he screamed at us and said 'he did not to waste his time in checking'. a) he's not charging less. At a rate of $8, the kind of customer service he's offering is pathetic. b) he chooses when to be professional and when not to. This is my second time coming to this place and this is the second time I've been highly disappointed. I will never be coming back here and really don't recommend anyone else coming here either. 1- the staff is really rude. When I was not happy with what they gave me they told me I gave them the measurements and that's how they sewed it. When in reality, I told them the design i wanted... And THEY took my measurements. Instead of asking how they could fix it suddenly it was all my fault. 2 - overpriced for shitty work. I was charged 55 dollars. 45 for the blouse, 5 dollars for the asthar and 5 for cups. The cups they put in the blouse were not only lopsided - But placed incredibly low. If i am paying 55 dollars i should get the design that I asked for and it should be really good work. I had to open up the blouse and cut the cups out because it was lopsided and did not even sit at my bust line 3 - I did not get the design I asked for. My design was so simple I do not know how it did not come out how I wanted it. I had no ties in my design yet I was returned a blouse with ties. I asked for the arm holes to be bigger and was given a blouse that was so tight I had to cut it Midway thru the wedding ceremony (I was a bridesmaid) I have bruises and scratches all over my shoulders and underarms because of this. I know that sequins is not the most comfortable fabric but there were 10 other girls in the bridal party with the same blouse (stitched from other places) I paid the most for my blouse and I was the ONLY one who was so irritated by the Blouse. The other tailors did a really good job at working with the material and trying to do things to make it more comfortable to wear. It is the day after the wedding and my arms are still in pain from wearing this blouse it was an absolute nightmare additionally, where the closure is they folded the sequins in! A huge one inch strip of bare sequins scratching up against my skin. Luckily I had enough time to sew a piece of fabric over the strip myself. 4- I attribute alot of these issues to the fact that the person who takes ur measurements and design is not even a tailor. So the tailor only gets what that man writes and draws and things get lost in translation. It is very unprofessional. 5- they take the money upfront, so it doesn't seem like they care about the quality of their work. They don't care if the customer is happy with the finish product. They've already been paid. If you don't like it basically it's your problem to deal with I normally don't write reviews on yelp. Or such terrible reviews for places but I am just so disgusted with the level of rudeness and unprofessional work that I had to warn others to stay away from this place. read more

He charged me $40 for a regular blouse with no cups and nothing extra I even gave him my own lining and no basically a no frills blouse. He was super rude when I picked it up when I stated that he over charges because I usually pay 30-35 at the other place and he has a very "i don't care" attitude. Terrible customer service. He charges a lot of money for sloppy work. Everyone walks you over to him as the tailor of the town but little do they know they have inexperienced seamstresses there that barely know what they are doing! Avoid at all costs they didn't sew any of my clothes the way I asked them to. I even needed a little opening on one and He charged me $20. They have a tie up with the stores around and can bluff anything to help them sell. For example I bought this very expensive outfit from a store. They walked me to this tailor . He said yes he would be able to make the blouse for lehenga. Then every time i went to stitch the blouse he would say , I am very busy now why dont you come after a day or two. One fine day he decided to work on my blouse. He made an invoice which was twice what he had quoted. Then to my surprise he goes "this material is defective does not have proper tucks margins. So I asked why did he help the store guys to sell it to me? So hesitantly agreed to make a blouse for me . Next to my surprise he goes you are very late, i wont be able to stitch it in time. I had no option but to find another tailor nearby who turned out to be really outstanding and I still regret why did I go to Alankar at first place. All my bridesmaids and my family chose to go with the new tailor because of Alankar's unprofessional behavior. This was not my first experience at Alankar. But, they have consistently been rude and unprofessional. May be because there are a very few Indian stylists, tailors and people have no choice. And they care the least...!! read more

This place is not good at all. We went there two times. The first time was for my blouses. The man took my measurements and we specifically told them to not add any cups into the blouse as they don't look good usually. It took them 3 weeks to tailor them! And then when I went to go pick them up, and of course they didn't fit. I told the lady in the front and she didn't believe me! Why would I lie? Also I told her I didn't want the cup and she told me that girls had to wear cups! Whose business is that? She continues to tell me to bring my mom because I "just am too young to understand". I am 23! So I brought back my mother the same day and the man in the front got fussy with my mom and kept told her he would charge extra for the removal of the cups. Then he told her "what will she wear without cups?!" in such a rude way. I was beyond upset. Then they took another week to fix my blouses which were also too tight. The second time my mother wanted 4 blouses fixed. It took them 2 weeks and even then when my mother tried them on, two didn't fit. The man in the front had the audacity to tell my mom that it wasn't his fault they didn't fit. Just want you to know what you're walking into here: One, it is hard to find a great tailor of Indian clothes. When you find that person, don't let go! This place was recommended to us, so we let the appearance of the shop slide, after all we're just trying to get by and don't want to judge anyone, you know? The ladies in the store at the sewing machines are nice but extremely quiet with limited interaction with any customers. The man is the one to take measurements, go into the fitting room with you, negotiate, et cetera. He does not mark up the tops or skirts during the alteration process, he "eyeballs" it. So what happened with us was the top's sleeves, in cold shoulder style, were extremely uneven. This man hollered and intimidated so much that another customer, a man there with this wife, actually said he would call the police if the proprietor did not calm down. In the end refunds were given which was good but took people in their 70s almost having a heart attack and the threat of police being called to do it. About 40 minutes of bullying, hollering, screaming. I don't know how this place can be in business. And I wouldn't let your daughter or wife or sister go alone. Not because anything strange happened with us (I want to be fair), but because it is uncomfortable going into a very small room with an exposed toilet with a man alone to take your intimate measurements. So I would insist on a woman doing that or I would be with the woman in your life every step of the way, no alone time. Because you never know, even some things are unintentional but still happen. This is the second time I have used This tailor - and I am EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED. A year and a half ago, I had them sew an outfit for me to wear to my step-son's Sangeet, and it was lovely. I was very satisfied with it. This time, the outfit they made is a TOTAL mess. My sister-in-law brought home this beautiful silk fabric for me for an outfit for my younger step-son's Sangeet. We brought the fabric to the tailor in early June (I don't need it till September). They measured me and I explained that I wanted it loose and not so tight in the chest and abdomen. My husband and I had much discussion with the tailor about the measurements and how we wanted it sewn. We discussed it in both English and my husband elaborated in Hindi. We also had a discussion about the price they were charging - the first outfit they did for me was only about $40 and they charged us $65 this time. I wasn't able to pick it up for a month (I was in the hospital for a week). When we went there to pick it up, they were not able to locate it. I had shown them the receipt, and they kept checking their order book and looking for the bag - and when they checked the book the second time, I asked them why they kept checking it. They told me they thought I had already picked it up!! I told them that was insulting!! Why would they think that I would come back looking for it if I had already received it!! Finally, after checking EVERY SINGLE BAG hanging in the store, they found my outfit in a bag with someone else's outfit! I was there for a half hour waiting for them to find it. My outfit is turquoise and they had stuffed it in a bag with someone else's red outfit! Unbelievable!! Once I got the outfit home and tried it on - it was SO TIGHT that I will not be able to wear it. My husband and I have been taking it apart and trying to resew parts of it, so that I can wear it (fortunately, we both know how to sew). There was plenty of fabric - they left 3" seams!! The outfit is so poorly sewn - not finished at all inside, with threads hanging all over the place and strange seams sewn over seams..... Areas where there were gaps in the lining..... Definitely sewn by a novice tailor. Under normal circumstances, I would have returned to the tailor to see if they could fix it, but I'm so angry with them, and afraid they'll mess it up even more. This has made our task of trying to salvage the outfit even more difficult. I am so angry about this experience. This outfit is a terrible disappointment, especially since I was planning to wear it to a special event and my sister-in-law gave me the fabric as a gift. Otherwise, I would have thrown the whole thing in the trash. BEWARE of this tailor -- they are riding on their previous reputation from when the father owned the business. I've come to this place for years now and over this past year brought over 10 blouses for me and my family. They've done a great job with each blouse, each fit perfectly. They definitely charge a bit more because they know they can, but they're worth the money when you want reliable service. It was my wedding and he also altered my lengha choli in proper way, it didn't look altered at all in appearance. Rates are also very reasonable. I went for shopping at oak tree road, any store i visit and ask for good tailor, every single store of ready-made garments suggested me alankar tailor, he gave me trail clothes on time and other remaining stuff on time, which saved my lot of time of going back and forth for fitting clothes, I travel from PA to NJ. My clothes weren't even ready when I went to pick them up at the given time so I had to go back later.They charged me $20 just to have my dress taken in and on top of that I'm guessing some of the crystals from my dress broke and fell off and the tailor attempted to glue them back on but did a sloppy job. I went to there store immediately and very unexpected happen. The lady in the store responded very rudely and harsh. It appears that they don't know how to deal nicely with customer. That person in the store told that don't come next time. They don't seem to be trustworthy. Finally it turned out to be useless and my expensive dress is now garbage. We wasted our time by visiting there store for that issue and it's wasting of time & money. If I could give zero stars, I most definitely would. He told my fiancé and I that his groomsmen's outfits would be ready by May 6, and then proceeded to delay the pickup date multiple times. We do not live nearby, and specifically made the long trip to see him to be sure that the kurtas he was sewing fit properly. My fiancé said the design was perfect - the cut of the neck, the length, etc. When we finally were allowed to pick up the rest of the kurtas, he was not even there and the pants were not ready. This was May 22, and again, they were supposed to be ready May 6. To top off this horror story, the kurtas were HORRIBLE!!!! The necks were completely wrong, there were pockets when we specifically told him we did not want pockets, and now there is no time to alter them as our wedding is next month. i went there over the weekend to get my mehendi lehenga stitched and fitted because my friend had told me it was the best place and she was right. They have 2 locations now and the new one is amazing. The old one is basically just for the pickup of tailored items. i was really impressed by the stitching and everything fit so perfectly just the way i like it. Also there saris and cholis and dresses are all too die for i fell in love with all of them. They had wonderful designer saris and cholis. My mom even bought a new sari for my wedding even though she already had one so now she's wearing the one from here it is absolutely gorgeous. i also bought a few dresses and saris to wear my first couple of days of being married. Always trying to please my mother-in-law. It is really affordable and is probably the best indian clothing and tailoring place in new jersey . Absolutely love it definitely recommend this to everyone who likes more of the modern styles of indian clothing and affordable prices. read more
