I am so grateful to the emergency and med oncology floor staff at Alaska Regional Hospital. I had an Asthma attack when I arrived in Anchorage. Colleen and Tom in emergency were amazing. I was quickly and efficiently taken care of. I was admitted to the floor within a few hours. Tricia and Grey we're fabulous, and I felt very well taken care of. I have been an emergency trauma registered nurse for over 30 years, and would highly recommend this hospital. read more

The care from the nurses, techs, and doctors was really so much nicer and the food was edible but the billing is a disaster as I have three insurances and for some reason the hospital does not understand the order to bill these insurances to pay. There is two other people in this town that have the same name as mine but the billing clerks do not understand that ssn's and birthdates are different and it has created a mess so I am so stressed over getting the hospital to bill correctly. I have yet to understand why nobody is listening to me or am I going to get sent to collections over the balance owing because of the billing clerks screwing up as I have called and called trying to get this bill fixed as I pay alot for insurance only to have these billing clerks not bill them leaving me to figure it out. Maybe I need a lawyer to help me. read more

Nasty, nasty nasty! The employees don't care! My sister was bought her tonight from the airport by ambulance. By the time I got her they had her sitting in the waiting room with a woman that was coughing and not covering her mouth. I told APD to take her to Providence for so many of the reasons I'm going to list here. They bought her here because Providence was full, so they bought her to the dirtiest hospital Anchorage has. The last time I was here, I bought my father in and we found out he had RSV when he returned back home The entire time they had my father sitting in the waiting room, never did he get into a room. Her nurse when she was in the room was nice but was she truly helpful. Slightly. It took twice asking for Motrin for her headache before she said the doctor wants to try Tramadol. The nurse offered it for the headache and never followed through. She has been in room air the entire time with her O2 dipping A LOT! But she was fine as they say. When she finally hit on oxygen is because I asked why is she not on oxygen and she's dipping? No one is coming to check her like we were told. When she beeped no one came in like she said they would. I asked her nurse an hour after admission came in to get insurance info, when she was getting her IV so she can get her scans done? She said who told you that? I told her the scan tech came up and said it and that she was going to tell her. Like wait what? The nurse walked in and said that's my fault usually if a doctor wants meds by mouth they don't do and IV. So you're admitting you're not doing your job correctly??? So an hour and half in she's on room air and dipping, headache still no meds, and no IV that's been ordered? Yeah she was not doing her job. It's to much to put in here, but do not take your loved ones here. I don't care if it's crowded go somewhere else. read more

I had to go to this hospital twice the first time was through the ER, where I was evaluated for continuing falls. The staff was very considerate of my needs and very caring. They actually took the time to listen to me; the doctor would explain what they felt was the issue and felt I ought to be admitted as a patient and the internist came in told me their plan of care for me and I went to my room. There was a nurse who was in charge of the floor I was sent to and he took the time to walk with me and talk and ask questions if I had any. Then after my tests the doctor explained my situation to me told me that I was being referred to a neurologist to speak with the step in my plan of care. They had a nickname for this doctor because it was a zoom conversation which he asked me question and told me I needed to see a neurosurgeon and referred me to Dr. Waller, who did my surgery a few weeks later. I do not remember everyone's name because it was a scary time because of the findings. The internists that followed me through the admission were very nice and took the time to actually talk with me. The only complaint I do have is that my Iv site was infiltrated and the nurses felt that since they could still flush it with normal saline doesn't tell you that it is infiltrated. When I had to go for my MRIs I told them this issue, I needed medication to be able to take the tests and them giving me the medication by IV did not work at all. The tech who did the tests was very good at her job and very understanding when I could not continue with the testing. Overall, the care I received was very good and the reason I say this is because I am a retired nurse and they were very friendly, personable as compared to the horrible experience I had at Providence where I had another type of surgery, at that hospital in PACU where you are when you wake from your surgery, the person sitting next to my stretcher was talking to someone on his cellphone while I began waking up, did not talk with me but continued to yell asking when my bed was going to be ready and when he was told it was ready he said "finally" proceeded to grab all the wires attached to my chest at the same time and yanked them off, very painful to me (this is what is called unprofessional) and the care I got on the floor was also as horrible because they do not care about their patients and how they treat them (so the people who say that Providence is a better hospital I am sorry just because it "looks cleaner does not relate to be better), different surgery that was necessary that occurred in between this admission and the surgery from this admission. The surgery that stemmed from the admission was very terrifying for me. The staff in the OR were very understanding of the fact of me being very claustrophobic and allowed me to hold my own mask as they were administering my medication to go to sleep. This is beyond what they really needed to do but they did and it helped calm me down and gave the whole atmosphere a little more relaxed under the anxiety I was having. I want to thank them all on both of these admission to Regional for the care I received other than the IV issue was excellent care. I was at this hospital in June and August of 2025 and at Providence in July of 2025. read more

I spent 10 days at Alaska Regional Hospital for heart surgery, and while the surgical outcome wasn't what I'd hoped for, I want to take a moment to share my gratitude for the hospital itself and the people who cared for me there. From the nurses and support staff to those working behind the scenes, I was treated with genuine kindness, professionalism, and compassion throughout my stay. It made an incredibly difficult time much easier to get through, and I truly appreciated the level of care I received each day. I also want to give special thanks to Matthew Cain, who helped guide me through the complex process of resolving a hospital debt. It was overwhelming at first, but his knowledge, patience, and willingness to go the extra mile made all the difference -- and in the end, the debt was successfully cleared. Alaska Regional deserves recognition for the way they care for their patients and support them even after discharge. I had a CT scan of my chest for cancer screening. The technician mentioned that I was being talked about in the radiology department and said I might not be the one they were talking about. I feel not only was this unprofessional but embarrassing. At the end of the exam I informed her that I had been a CT and X-Ray technician but was retired now. In my opinion this could be considered a HIPA violation. I hope someone actually reads this at regional Hospital. read more

Wonderful nurses, staff and facility. But attempting to call for detailed billing information is a trainwreck. Terrible phone menu system, idiotic "virtual assistant". Once I got through to a real person, I was asked to provide, name, address, phone number, account number and last 4 digits of SSN for the third time. I did so, and the real person (she) promptly hung up. I am now attempting to repeat the process, hopefully with some success this time. I have been on hold for over 11 minutes so far (for the third time). The "voice" repeats continually, "Due to higher than expected call volume, our average wait time is longer than usual . . . 99 percent of the staff in the ER are nice , professional and friendly. How ever there is a nurse there named Becky, ( heavy set with red hair). Who is rude, condescending, impatient and unkind. I have two separate encounters with this Becky and both were the same. I can't imagine having to work with her or being an elderly or non English speaking patient. Not only is that hospital really dirty but thier staff has I do not give a crap for you attitude. When I told the Nurse I was leaving the ER she said "Good I will remove you from the computers" The hospital was really full. Everything was dirty. I mean chairs caked with dirt. Mud everywhere on the floors. People were being Rude to the staff because the staff was rude too. It was awful. I will be calling thier HR department. First time I ever had surgery in my life for a total knee replacement was a little over 4 weeks ago here. I'm deeply sorry for some bad reviews people left, but understand their situations weren't the same. I'll try to keep it short and sweet, but I felt I got VIP treatment all the way. The lady admitting me was very nice and professional. Then in the pre-operating area, the nurse kept me calm and gave me a nice dose of tranquilizers while my wife was keeping me company. My surgeon paid a brief visit, then the nurse anesthetist came and injected a pain ball with no problem and later on I was hauled to a freezing cold operating room, she inserted the epidural needle with no problem. As scared of needles as I am, it happened on the second try. Next I remember I was numb, then laying down with a staff surrounding me and woke up about 3 hours later. The attending recovery nurse ensured great comfort for me, then I was hauled up to my home for the next 3 nights. A nice view and pure comfort with nurses and assistants ensuring I got my pain meds on time and getting out of bed. And the physical therapist staff did great letting me break in my new knee and basic exercises. And good meals and snacks the whole time. read more

The ER doctor working the emergency room at Alaska Regional Hospital on 07/05/2024 should be ashamed of herself. We know Dr. Stevens didn't know we were new to town and were unaware Alaska Regional Hospital was to be avoided. Our fault for assuming an emergency room physician would take my wife's pain seriously. Sorry for thinking you would see my wife as a person. Most of all, we are sorry for all the people who have to visit you because they might not have insurance or the "right" kind of insurance. Seriously though, if you can avoid this Hospital, do it. Dr. Stevens didn't ask questions, pushed a narrative that had nothing to do with the facts at hand. What's worse, even after my wife's CT scan came back abnormal, Dr. Stevens still pushed a crazy theory that had nothing to do with what was happening. Simply put, any hospital that calls Dr. Stevens a medical professional, is a hospital Alaskans should avoid. read more

A nurses aide at this hospital with a history of some sort of trauma, decided that a patient scared her... That patient was sitting on the edge of the bed, moaning and groaning in pain, and could not tell her what was wrong, so instead of getting the nurse... She went and got Security- telling Security that she was afraid of this patient Security came back, harassed this patient and now, in spite of the fact that he has something that can be fatal and needs to be treated and is very painful. He decided he would rather leave the hospital AMA and go home where he's not going to be harassed. The inappropriate and lack of care has caused this young man enough fear, and anxiety that he'd rather be home and die in pain than to get the help he needs... Shame on you Alaska regional. read more

Pro's: The took good care of my daughter for her surgery and she said the staff was "very nice" and " took good care of her" Con's: - the in-processing for my daughter's surgery was a nightmare. I didn't get the required phone calls to set up testing, labs and covid test till the last minute and I had to prompt them. My partner ( our daughter's mother was told she couldn't wait for our minor child in the surgical waiting area, this was after three conversations with hospital members regarding my partner staying with our child throughout the surgery and her recovery. It was a cluster F. We were supposed to be discharged at 10am and had to wait three hours for durable medical equipment that I tried to order before the surgery. Here is the stickler the case manager lied about the request at 8am that day we found out it was placed the day before, we were charged for it, which according to our insurance we shouldn't have. And then I was demeaned and berated by the case worker when I tried to register the complaint about the continuions administrative screwup's. The case worked lied and said my partner was okay with the charges for the equipment, which nothing could have been more from the truth. My partner stated she spoke to the case manager telling her we were not supposed to pay for the equipment. I will never go to his hospital again. The right hand doesn't know what the left is doing... if they will lie about administrative procedures they will lie in there charting. Providence and Mat-Su regional are the only two hospitals I will use from now on. I would rate 1 of 5 but my daughter said they treated her well. Bottom line having worked in two level one trauma centers back east ... this hospital completely lacks customer service skills and professionalism. I am filing a complaint. read more

Had the most amazing care by outstanding & knowledgeable nurses, but when it comes to getting records(from a extremely rude people from their armchair at home) or assistance from a administrative level is only a continuous phone system connection. Yeah, thanks NOT! Extraordinary frustrating and disappointed with getting the expensive testing results I needed. I had the best care ever, but the worst end results in what I paid for. I went into the ER with a honest and pure heart of suffering. I was treated immediately with compassion, kindness, and complete Pure non-judgment. They checked on me in the waiting room and made sure I was taken care of. Not only worthy RN extremely kind but the doctor took his absolute time to check on me three or four times within 45 minutes to make sure I was OK. That is unheard of most emergency rooms. You have no idea how incredibly compassionate they treated me. my emergency room doctor took his time to understand what was going on with me, and the RNs treated me with so much respect it brought tears to my eyes. Please, if you are suffering, regardless of who you are and you live in Anchorage, do not hesitate to get to this ER if you are suffering call 911 it's an emergency and request Alaska regional. The compassion and respect I was given was beyond belief. I just wanna give you guys an all your medical staff a massive thank you. God bless you. read more

Over the past several years I have used Alaska Regional's ER Services a couple of times for myself and twice for my elder mother and another for my elderly father and another time for my adult son. These visits have included treating kidney stone attacks; a serious heart attack when my mother's heart stopped and she had to be resuscitated; and two broken hips. The folks in the ER have been great, as have been the surgeons, physicians, and nurses who have treated my family. We have been blessed by having these great people and this facility in our community. read more

Although I have always preferred Providence Hospital, we were limited on choices of doctors referred to us by our primary doctor to perform surgery due to a Inguinal hernia. My husband. Poor guy was in a lot of pain. We recommend Dr. Sherry Johnson of Far North Surgery whose connection is within the complex of Alaska Regional. The hospital itself, although dated, has been kept up well, renovated and very clean. Entrance and exit into the parking lot and building designation is far less complicated than that at Providence. However, parking availability could certainly be better. Check-in was fairly easy (make sure you have all of your health insurance cards handy!) and the wait was minimal to go in for surgery. Checking out was lengthy given the process of having to deal with someone sharing repeated instructions (borderline adnauseam). I felt like Joe Pesci with the okay, okay, okay response. I had to wait an hour while help was being offered with getting dressed. A bit overbearing in an already exhausting situation. Nonetheless, the experience was good under the circumstances, and it was obvious that- for the most part, the care here is genuine and sincere. After all, nobody likes going to the hospital, so every little bit helps to provide a calm and professional atmosphere. And we were given that at Alaska Regional Hospital. read more

The staff and doctors are very respectful and polite and help make you feel comfortable and make sure you you are well and healthy before you leave to go home. While vacationing in Alaska I came down with influenza A, severe dehydration, and sepsis. I was taken by ambulance to Alaska Regional and I thank God that I was. I had amazing doctors, nurses, CNAs, OT, PT, and case managers that went overboard to make sure that I was well taken care of in so many ways from the ER to discharge. One nurse, bless her, stopped long enough to comb out my hair which I appreciated beyond belief. The staff were kind, compassionate, helpful, knowledgeable, and seemed for the most part to go the extra whenever they could. Even the food was good. I would give 5 stars, but the cafeteria had really strange hours making it very hard for my husband to find a place to eat as his hotel was some distance from the hospital. The case manager even worked very hard to get us a taxi and wheelchairs set up at the airport to be able to get me on the plane when I was finally able to leave. I was there for 7 days. 98% of the staff that I dealt with were my angels and I thank God for all of them. Bless you Alaska Regional. read more

I just gotten blood drawn (fassting) and havent eaten since 630pm last night. I asked the person (Megan) at the entrance if the cafeteria was open so that I could get something to eat. She started asking questions about people in the hospital or visiting. And she deliberately denied me to go to the cafeteria. Ive eaten at the cafeteria before. And MEGAN was rude and basically told me to leave. The hospital customer service sucks and megan is rude! The last time I went to the ER, I was brought in by ambulance because of severe pain in my upper back. The Doctor told me I had pancreatis. They shot me up with morphine and Zofran than the nurse told me I had to sit in the lobby because they needed my bed. I had pajama bottoms, and a tank top, no shoes or coat or bra. This was November and it was cold outside. I asked if I could have a robe, and the nurse told me no. She did not walk me out, just left me on my own, wobbly from the painand antinausea meds. In the lobby the security guard was rude and running her mouth at me. I ended up waiting outside in the cold to get away from her. This was wrong for them to do. They could have cared less about me or my welfare. Horrible experience at this ER. read more

I am throughly impressed with the staff and care here. I'm having a pretty serious medical issue right now and the staff is wonderful. I'm in the CVSU unit and my day nurse Tac is phenomenal! He is by far the best nurse I've ever had. EVER. The charge nurse Chinh is super sweet as well. The doctors and other medical staff here are so personable and friendly. They go out of their way to converse and joke around making you feel so comfortable when you're going through something that could potentially be very frightening. The hospital is a bit older, the housekeeping staff could really clean a bit more thoroughly. Considering all of the positives, I can live with that. The food is pretty decent and I'm very relaxed. I would recommend choosing AK Regional for the care and concern alone. read more

They basically told me that since I wasn't immediately dying that I wasn't important and when they made an error told me I wasn't their problem anymore and that they wouldn't fix it after I left. For an ER visit costing a several hundred dollars out of my own pocket I find this to be in poor taste and disturbing. If you don't think your patients are important than maybe you shouldn't work in healthcare. I now have to pay for another doctor visit elsewhere to fix what they messed up since I need a substitute medication (my insurance wouldn't cover what they ordered which cost $5000). I'm mute and diabetic with mobility issues. They had very little compassion with helping me resolve the issue or realizing how hard it is for me to do these things on my own. I went here because the ambulance said Providence wasn't taking people, now I know why the wait times are short. Moral of the story, don't leave until you double check everything which is not always easy when you're in distress. read more

My 2 year old son woke up with an issue. An infection. So I took my daughter to daycare and my side to work. I went with my son to the ER here. The lives up to their Moto of "treated not seated" and we were in and out in like 15 minutes! Awesome, totally needed it to be quick because I needed to get to work. About two weeks later I had an issue myself and needed to be seen. I thought that I would go here for myself as well. Full disclosure, I have Blue Cross Blue Shield, which does not list this hospital as in network. I also am a veteran and can use the VA/Base facilities. But I chose this place because they WERE quick and they are competing with Providence. I thought I'd help out the "little guy." So I went in and sat in the waiting room for 2 hrs and 24 minutes exactly. After that I was taken into a room and waited back there for 34 minutes before someone walked in. I was/am incredibly mad at this wait time. The doctor walked in, looked at me, and prescribed me some meds. It took him less than 5 minutes and he was out of the room and I was walking out of the hospital. Fast forward a month. I got a bill from the hospital that I had a large copay on, which I expected, for my son. And I for myself as well. I paid both... Fine, okay. And then a couple days ago I got huge bill that's apparently for the 5 minute period I spent with the Doctor. And this bill was only covered a little by my insurance. So, my assumption is that I'm going to owe this place close to $2,000 for literally 20 minute of their time (split between my son and I). They were not upfront that they bill desperately and on the last trip there my wait time was incredibly upsetting. As for the care they provided, they were adequate. I suggest going to the other places. This hospital is probably losing business for a reason. read more

I will never use this hospital again as they screwing up billing my insurance and I have gotten a nasty phone call about the balance owing which they want me to pay as the third insurance has not paid yet. I called when I got the first bill about the third insurance and they said they would bill it which should have been done after they got the second insurance payment. They didn't call for prior authorization from the first insurance so I lost money through their screw up and when I checked in that I had to tell the intake clerk the order to bill my insurance. I feel like through their screw up that they should eat the balance for the work that I did for them.. read more

Went in this past Sunday because I couldn't breathe well; still can't. I was seen quickly, but I could tell right off the bat that the triage nurse, and the doctor who saw me, were more than willing to write me off as having anxiety. I am no stranger to anxiety, and not once in my life have I had anxiety to the point of struggling to breathe 24/7 for several months. The doctor was professional enough, but as soon as I mentioned that I had anxiety as a child, I could tell he was no longer interested. I'm now 24 years old. I do not suffer from anxiety anymore. If anything, I'm suffering from anxiety due to my inability to breathe properly. That being said, the doctor still ordered an EKG and chest x Ray, both of which came back clear. I was told to try and get in with a pulmonologist, and written a prescription for Claritin.. Overall, I was happy with how quickly I was seen and the professionalism of my doctor. I'm not thrilled with walking out with a prescription for Claritin when I literally feel as if I'm suffocating 24/7. read more

Where do I begin? Every single one of the staff members have been amazing and nice. I'm here for a lovely two night stay, with great views all around me of beautiful Alaska, for an appendectomy that occurred last night on an emergency basis. I was diagnosed and wheeled into the OR with two hours. I literally waited for nothing, CT, labs, IV......... nothing. They set the standard for hospitals everywhere in my book. I came in for chronic pain and my legs are tingling and burning and I have restless leg syndrome and arthritis and was told by my doc in Florida that losing feeling in my legs was possible when I was 23. She cut me off I barely able to to explain everything that was wrong and she looked at me like how would she know that all disrespectfully. Then when she took my vitals and when she was done, knowing I was in a wheelchair she left me in the door way with door leading back to the waiting room. Then another muse/doctor had to open the door for me. I asked how long the wait was going to be then she told me 2 1/2 hours unless you stop breathing then she said then we'll take you back. so I left bc I felt like my pain was being belittled. I felt very disrespected, belittled, down graded. I don't recommend anyone with chronic pain to go to Regional Hospital or for anything for that matter! If no stars was an option I would have done that!!!! read more
