HORRIBLE! I got wisdom teeth surgery at the ANMC dentistry, they gave me pain medication after the surgery but no antibiotics. So 3 days later after my surgery my whole mouth is infected and I have a horrible fever, I couldn't open my mouth over 1 inch because my jaw was locked and my throat swelled up so bad that I couldn't drink water without being in horrible pain. So I go into the ANMC EMERGENCY ROOM at 5 in the morning and after waiting an hour and a half I finally get help. The emergency room nurses thought I was fine and that all I needed was some "pain relieving mouth wash" when my entire throat was shutting on me, and me dealing with a 104 degree fever. So after they send me out of the hospital an hour later I can't even make it out of the parking lot without being in the worst pain imaginable so I go back inside and demand them to keep me at the hospital so they can help me with my throat and fever. After about an hour later they finally agree. At this point I thought I would be okay... I was wrong. The surgeon who did my wisdom teeth and gave me no antibiotics was the same doctor who "checked on me everyday to see how I was doing" the man couldn't even look me in my eyes and my entire left side of my face and neck swelled up so bad I looked like a chipmunk. The doctor blamed it on strep throat. So after spending about 5 days and nights in the ANMC emergency room. I finally get told I will have to be undergoing surgery. Mind you I haven't been able to eat food or drink water those 5 days and nights due to my throat being shut. They put me in surgery and cut my neck open and put a tube in my neck to drain my neck of all the stuff that was in it. I spent another 2 nights in the hospital after that with a tube in my neck and was finally able to come home. I lost 25 pounds and looked like a completely different person leaving the hospital. All because I wasn't given antibiotics after my wisdom teeth surgery. Mind you after wisdom teeth surgery the main thing you need is ANTIBIOTICS. These people are not smart or they just DGAF.

Visited the Alaska Native Medical Center twice while I was in Anchorage. Once was just for a tour since I'm in healthcare and was curious and wanted to see what Anchorage hospitals were like. I was impressed by what I saw. The hospital caters to the native Alaska population and offers free, or virtually free, culturally appropriate care. Trust me when I tell you that's no small feat when you stop to consider that Alaska is the home to 13 native ethnic groups with a host of languages and cultural differences to consider. And what's so cool is that the care is COMPREHENSIVE. Everything that one needs is right on site. There's on site primary care physician offices, pharmacies, a dental clinic, Emergency room, and inpatient care. They even provide transportation for people who need it. AND because so many natives have to travel great distances from their villages to get there, they even have on-site accomodations. They didn't miss a trick with this place. Other things I loved about ANMC? They encourage family members to get patients off the floor and interact, unlike many other hospitals where patients are treated like prisoners. I saw some VERY sick patients being permitted to move freely in the hospital with their families... I thought that was really awesome. Also cool was the cafeteria- the food was bangin (although the coffee was wreteched LOL)... they even had fried bread, which is a native Alaskan treat and deeeeeeeeelish. But the main reason I like ANMC? At 10:30 in the morning on the day we were supposed to leave, I realized that the love of my life, who is native Alaskan, needed to be seen by a doctor before we left Alaska. We called, and even though it was way late in the day, they still accomodated him. There was no begging, pleading or fanagling like most doctors offices... they just said okay and he got his appointement. No bullshit. Gotta love that. Ok, so if you're not native, you might thnk you would have no reason to visit ANMC, but you'd be wrong. Especially if you're a healthcare worker, this place is just interesting. I was fascinated that their approach to healthcare is on the whole person, and they were actually DOING it instead of just talking about it. But assuming you're not native, you might find ANMC Alaska Native Heritage Collection interesting. There's over 1,000 native Alaskan crafts on display throughouth the hospital and they are EVERYWHERE and rival anything you will see in a museum... in fact, the collection is probably better. There's also a native craft gift shop that will make you drool... and besides wouldn't you feel good knowing that the proceeds from your purchase go to a good cause? Yeah, I thought so.

Dr. Lech Dabrowski is a wonderful clinician, very smart and with a common touch for his patients. Very glad to have him for care.

Food was tasty, with some creative variations. Nurses and CNAs were quickly responsive to my needs and often proactive in offering help to make me more comfortable, for example, timing tylenol and ibuprofin 45 minutes before my arduous PT visits. The physical and occupational therapists were particularly impressive in personalizing my exercises to prepare me for my home situation, such as getting in and out of a truck, an air taxi, stairs at home. It was important to me to be able to get outside for fresh air every day, and my care team allowed me to wheel myself outside after the third day (with an alarm mat on the seat). The care at St. Elias exceeded my expectations and I have said so to many people since my discharge. Highly recommended. My only question is that they discharged me with no physical therapy exercise sheet and no dietitian's recommendations for increasing protein, etc to help facilitate bone regrowth.

It must be to help keep the heat in on really cold days! Almost everything you do requires you to take a number at one of the little quiosks. If you haven't done so already, better hope uou had an appointment, otherwise you'd be waiting all day. The morning hours can be brutal as there's sick call and people who get injured so if you can hold off until at least 1 pm then I would recommend that. That way you'll also have better luck at finding parking. If not, good luck because you'll either have to go extra early or circle the parking lot like a hawk looking for a tasty meal. This facility is overall very clean and for the most part organized. It's there to meet all your health needs but what could use improvement is how you get results because it takes forever and follow up can be pretty slow. Overall I've had a good experience here and the staff will usually try to accommodate your needs (especially for people mortified of shots like this gal!) They are patient, but don't expect too much; they gotta help hundreds of other eager patients too.

Since there is no bus service within the base distance, I had to walk 2.9 miles from Fort Richardson to the VA clinic near Muldoon Gate. Upon arriving at the bus station at 6:18 am, right next to the VA clinic and bus 25 stop, my asthma began to act up due to the cold air, making it difficult to breathe. I went inside to use the restroom and took my inhaler, then sat down for about 10 to 15 minutes waiting for the bus. When a security officer approached me and greeted me, I responded cordially. However, when he returned a few minutes later and asked if I was waiting for someone, I felt a bit perplexed. After explaining I was waiting for the bus and providing my military spouse ID, the officer's tone and demeanor made me feel embarrassed and uncomfortable, particularly when he emphasized 'you're the military spouse.' As the bus arrived, two officers watched me from the door, staring, which I perceived as profiling. Regardless of my status as a military spouse, the treatment I received was unwarranted and profiling in nature, particularly given the circumstances of my car breaking down and needing to use the bus. I felt unwelcome and uncomfortable due to the manner in which I was looked at, akin to having committed a crime. The prolonged stare from both individuals as I boarded the bus and their continued gaze as the bus departed was not only unsettling but also peculiar, especially considering their position at the entryway.
