Combining…read moretheir personal touches (like getting to know the names of their clients) with their avid fishing experience, is a successful combination that is guaranteed to supply you and your friends/family with a great time! They were very detailed in explaining how to operate the equipment, helped us land some delicious halibut, and demonstrated how to fillet a halibut like a professional! The boat ride was very smooth and they drove us down to the beach in a passenger van so it is very convenient for those who can't walk long distances Thank you Brian and Katie for taking such great care of us! Update: despite the last minute setback mentioned below, I had a good experience today on the…read moresmaller boat out of Ninilchik with Cpt. Thomas. Everyone landed a halibut or two. Out of 5 fisherman, we landed three halibut over 38" and some small ones. Not as big as I had hoped, but a good experience nevertheless. ------------ Everything went smoothly over the past month as I booked/planned my travel to Alaska from California- a trip of a lifetime of sorts for me, such that I ended spending/investing 6K+ total for the opportunity to fulfill my dream of landing a giant (4ft+) halibut. They told me if that was my sole focus, then I should definitely head out of the Homer, AK port. it was a major commitment, not only for me- but for my wife who was willing to accompany me, since she knew how much it meant to me... after enduring ~6hrs of flights (+3hr layover) and driving 6hr (one way) from anchorage to homer, I received a call from them-- just as I was pulling into "lands end hotel", which i booked soley for this. ---- Unfortunately, they decided to cancel my original booking out of homer (larger boat w/capacity 16+) and sent me to a smaller boat (full capacity) from ninilchik instead (40-60m) drive. Prior to booking, weeks ago, I was ensured by Dustin that my boat out of Homer would head out no matter what (ie: even if the resulting ticket/sales came too low and only my wife and i were on it). But they (corporate?) decided not to honor our original terms, i assume to save on costs. note: i do not blame Dustin for this. it is out of his control. I write this only to hopefully illuminatue how poorly it seems to be run and focused over money-first I understand things can change, ie: massive storm can cancel a trip, but this instance, at least to me, was just out of corporate greed and i ultimately have to pay the consequences. The excuse given to me was that they needed to perform maintenance on the boat, but i hope its obvious to folks reading this that it is not -- with several contradictions. note: Dustin himself was decent enough, so I have no ill will there. it is Ninilchik Charters itself that needs to be held accontable

I understand your 60-90 day cancellation policy, but did you know that my wife fell a few days ago, broke her knee, and is now unable to travel or even put weight on it? We had to cancel our entire Alaska trip! We have a Dr's statement stating she is unable to travel at all. So, we have had a medical emergency. So I guess we are just out the $3200, and now you are not returning my calls or emails? Shame on you! If or when we travel to Alaska, we will definitely not book with you all. You know my name and number if you want to communicate. Messages were left on your machine. Ron L

A Truly Unforgettable Experience -- Above & Beyond in Every Way…read more Captain Steve's Fishing Lodge in Ninilchik deserves every bit of praise I can give. Our trip was planned last-minute while my brother was home on a short military leave before he had to return to Guam. We wanted to go fishing and sprinkle our dad's ashes to mark the end of probate, and this crew turned what could've been a heavy, emotional trip into something profoundly meaningful and beautiful. Despite being closed for renovations, Captain Steve and his wife, LeAnn, reopened just for us because our dad had fished with them many times over the years. They even rearranged their own holiday plans to make sure we could come. That alone speaks volumes about the kind of people they are. From start to finish, they handled everything. They helped us secure a last-minute car rental, cleaned and processed all our fish for shipping home, and woke up early--on what should've been their day off--to make sure we were fed, warm, and taken care of. Leann cooked five-star meals for us every day--breakfast, lunch, and dinner. She truly is the "hostess with the mostest!" And the highlight we'll be talking about forever? They cooked fresh crab for us right on the boat. Pulled from the ocean and cooked and eaten by hand on the spot--it doesn't get any better than that. We were also incredibly blessed with wildlife sightings. Over the course of our trip, we saw two pods of orcas, playful sea otters, several seals, and even a bald eagle--which meant more to us than words can say. The eagle is a special spirit animal for my brother and I, a symbol we deeply associate with our dad, and seeing one felt like a sign that he was with us. Captain Steve chose the perfect place for us to spread our dad's ashes--one of the spots he used to take him fishing. Evan, the sweetest and most attentive deckhand, helped us every step of the way and even brushed the snow off our car before we left. Every detail was handled with genuine care and kindness. This wasn't just a fishing trip. It was a healing experience, a family moment, and a memory we'll carry for the rest of our lives. We felt cared for, supported, and welcomed like family. We can't wait to come back in the summer for halibut, but for now, the salmon--and the memories--are perfect. Thank you, Captain Steve's team, for making our trip so special and unforgettable. -The Vuicich Family

Outstanding Fishing Experience with Captain Steve and Crew!…read moreI highly recommend Captain Steve and his amazing crew! From the moment we stepped aboard, they made us feel like family. (And amazing wife) The entire day was well-organized and exceeded all of my expectations--from the fishing itself to the top-notch accommodations on board. Captain Steve went above and beyond, even helping us fillet and clean our catch of fish and crab. It was clear that the crew genuinely cared about providing an unforgettable experience. What a great group of people--knowledgeable, friendly, and incredibly professional. I'll definitely be booking again!

Beware the Catch-a-Lot Bear Viewing rip-off! My wife and I…read morewere duped by the false advertising inn their website and in conversation with the owner/captain. He suggested that we should be prepared to walk up to a mile to see the bears at the Clark reserve. What he neglected to tell us was that the walk would be from the boat to the shore through deep mud and muck in chest-high water as the boat anchored off shore. My wife trudged to shore with the group and encountered an unpleasant surprise: The guide was terrified of bears!!! While other tours arrived and approached a rather tame bear within 20 feet, our guide kept the group a quarter of a mile away from the bear, threatening them with being attacked if they approached any closer. My wife returned after 2-3 hours on shore (famished--not permitted to bring a snack along) and showed me a picture of the bear she had taken--It was a tiny brown dot on the shoreline! She confirmed that this was the closest they were allowed by the guide. He also spent a great deal of time in a panic trying to contact the boat via radio without reply--He had neglected to turn on the receiver. I was unable to accompany my wife on shore, though I was charged for the tour. Before we boarded the boat for the tour I told the owner/captain that my right foot is prosthetic, and he said that would not be an obstacle. I regularly walk and hike more than a mile, so I accepted his invitation to join the group. However, . I was unable to maintain my footing in the muck (not surprising) and was forced to stay on the boat, viewing a couple of bears through binoculars at a great distance. The website also suggested exciting wildlife viewing of many marine mammals during the trip--In fact, we sped full-speed to and from with no sign of marine mammals. Prior to the trip, during the collect-your-money phase, the owner/captain was frequently available via phone and email to answer all questions. After the trip, he refused to reply to any of several attempts to discuss compensation for the scam advertising. We learned later from folks who lodged at Clark reserve that the bears there are quite tame--the residents greet them by name, and one can approach without fear. We later saw, close, marvelous brown bears at Eagle River nature center, north of Anchorage, where they run wild, fish for salmon in the streams, and thereby reward a beautiful hike. The fee there is 5 dollars. NOTE: The owner/manager's replied to my previous review by claiming that we did not book and participate in the awful tour. We DID book and participate in the tour and have a payment receipt and booking confirmation to prove that. Shame on him for trying to cover up with a lie.
