I've been a member of Albany Crossfit for six months and work out at four days a week. I've also been a member of Crossfit club in New Jersey for another six months. I'm a senior (65 yrs old) who has been an absolute non-athlete for my entire life; workouts are new to me, and I take them seriously. While to outward appearances I haven't changed, my physician was so impressed after he examined me, noticed my muscle tone, and saw my blood work, that he pumped me for details about Crossfit. So I told him. Crossfit programming alternates between three kinds of routines: those that build strength, such as lifting weights; those that improve one's energy metabolism, such as box jumps, rowing, and burpees; and those that improve one's coordination and movement through gymnastics, such as ring dips and hand stands. Routines frequently involve high intensity interval training, such as Izumi Tabata's protocol. Crossfit routines do vary constantly. Finally, Crossfit only develops functional muscles--the muscles one uses in life and sports, like one's gluteal muscles and hamstrings. I also told my doctor that with my rotator cuff repair, the ruptured disc in my lower back and my mild anemia, my coaches tailor my routine to test my outer limits; my workouts are invariably challenging. Finally, I said I thought Crossfit improved on his somewhat sage advice, which was do anything that makes you breath hard for an hour a day. Returning to my opinions about the ACF, for a club that's grown quickly, I'm pleased by the quality, training and morale of ACF's coaching staff. Because of my variations in my personal schedule, I'm continually switching class times, and coaches. I find that while the coaches are each different people with their own ways, at the core, they teach the same skills; any variations I see as trivial idiosyncrasies. New coaches are continually in training; when I help them help me, it helps us both. One coach I thought was ignoring me, until I asked for help; as it turned out, he'd been leaving me alone out of respect for an old codger! Another coach solicits my mantras for use in class--most memorably "eat the pain." ACF's community spirit shows itself in many ways. Recently I was touched to see an apparent novice coming down the home stretch on a workout. As she struggled with her last dozen push-ups, a couch joined her, matching her push-ups count for count, while counting down aloud. Soon she was surrounded by nine other class members, each matching her efforts push-up by push-up, also counting down aloud. As she stood up after finishing, she had a satisfied smile on her face. For me, that's a supportive community! That gesture showed respect for and reaffirmed the effort she put into her workout. While on the subject of community norms, another is that members are humble about their capacities; mostly, people check egoistic attitudes at the door. Complaining is not "in;" "wimping out" is viewed as gauche. ACF programs heavier workouts than the other Crossfit club I used. The coaches at both clubs led the Workouts of the Day. Unlike the other club, ACF also leads a Warm-Up that's often tough enough to would pass for a workout in many other clubs. In addition, ACF coaches lead an After Party workout that's also demanding. Finally, ACF coaches sometimes lead a Mobility session, to teach us stretches and roller movements. I'm dripping when I leave my ACF session, whereas I rarely dripped when I left my workouts at the other club; they just didn't work me as hard as does ACF--thanks coaches! I read a couple of strong negative reviews. I tried to understand them as best as I could, but despite my effort at kindly attention, it still seemed like I work out in a different world than they thought to join. I just want to start by saying, I never write reviews...but after reading the reviews here, I feel compelled to share my positive experiences with crossfit thus far. It took me two tries to finally join crossfit. The first time I went, the 5 minute workout kicked my ass and I was more sore than I've ever been in my life. I was an immediate believer in the workouts. However, the nutrition advice was what stopped me in my tracks. I think I had a hard time believing it because it went against conventional wisdom and the nutrition messages we've been bombarded with our whole lives. So I walked away and continued to be bored with my workouts (And I'm not the type of person who likes to work out lightly or mosey around a gym not being pushed physically and mentally either). I was a member of a local boxing gym. I love boxing and still go there to this day, but to be honest I was bored with the workouts. And once I mastered proper boxing form and was able to get through the classes easily, I wanted more of a challenge and to get out of the plateau I was in. I loved the community of the gym I went to but still something was missing. During this time I was also struggling with medical issues I've had my whole life. I've been in and out of the gastroenterologist's office since high school thinking I had Chron's disease, Celiacs disease and other stomach disorders. However, all the tests came back inconclusive. One day after a weekend of being ill, I had enough. I thought about the Paleo Diet I first heard about in my crossfit trial and bought some books to learn more. The rest is history. I started eating Paleo and to my shock all of the stomach ailments that have been troubling me for about 10 years completely disappeared. I felt great for the first time ever. It was after I realized that the crossfitters were right this whole time that I soon signed up. I'm brand new to crossfit, it's only been a few weeks. And they haven't been easy. Usually whenever I put my mind to something, I excel. At crossfit, I've met my match. Lifting weights is completely foreign to me as are all of the movements I need to learn. But I'm hooked and I look forward to go to the gym every day. Crossfit is exactly what I've been looking for. It doesn't get boring because the workouts are different every day and I push myself and do things I never thought I'd be able to. But beyond the workouts, the community aspect of crossfit is great. That's what I look for in a gym, I want to know the people I see every day while supporting one another and making new friends. The trainers and members of crossfit have been more supportive than any other gym I've been involved with. People are cheering you on the whole time you pour sweat, work your ass off, when you fail and when you succeed. And they are always 100% professional. I have never been sexually harassed in any way, shape or form. If you're interested, try to look past the negativity, bruised egos and defensiveness and have an open mind. Everyone goes to crossfit for the same reason, because something their currently doing isn't working. So, be open to trying new things and stepping out of your comfort zone, you just may like it :) read more

I just finished my first month at the gym and have had an "A-OK" experience. The workouts are great and the gym is fantastic, but some of the members are under the impression that crossfit is something you convert to rather than an activity you do to relieve the stress you accumulate after sitting for eight hours. Great gym, but the members can be a little too intense at times. The gym has been disparaged by some because of its cult-like following. My own experience of the gym is that some of its members resemble fanatic sports fans. They're passionate about their gym. Some sports fans get together before games to party, as some crossfitters get together at the local pup; some fans like to wear jerseys to show their support for their team, like some crossfitters wear jerseys to show support their gym; and some fans trash other teams, just as some crossfitters trash other exercise programs. Keep it to yourself, fellas. When some of the members at the gym tried to educate me on the benefits of the paleo diet, or why I don't need milk, or why bread is bad for me, I have only one response: show me the double-blind study. That ends that. The attitude of some of the members is another story. I see great benefit in convincing gym-goers to consider themselves as athletes; warming-up, eating healthful foods, and sticking to an exercise regimen are all great for an American culture that is becoming increasingly sedentary and obese. If considering yourself an athlete is what counters that trend for some people, more power to them. However, listening to some of the members trashing people who work out at other gyms does get old quick. Thankfully many of the members are there for a workout and are more than happy to leave the gossip to the arrested adolescents. I found it a little ironic when the coach that put me through my introductory session talked of global-gyms (a pejorative term, to be sure) as the enemy of the promotion of fitness, and then led me to the front desk where I found a clothing rack of crossfit t-shirts, shoes, and wrist bands. Those gyms are only in it for the money was the general message, but we were soon on to the lesson of why I won't get a really good workout unless I don the official Albany Crossfit gear. Some people really like that (see above), not I. The coach dropped it, and I was appreciative of that. I want to be clear, I like this gym. I never have to worry about inventing a workout, and I know that someone, whether one of the trainers or the person exercising next to me, is always watching which makes it difficult to slack-off. I know myself, and I need the extra motivation. Most of the members are easy going, but there are those who believe crossfit is a church. Like little kids, I let them run around pontificating about the dangers of wheat until they tire themselves out. Then I get on with my workout. read more

Just wanted to update the review now that I've been going to CrossFit Clifton Park for 8 weeks. LOVE IT! This is one of the most humbling, and at the same time most motivating, workouts I have ever done. I feel physically 8 years younger in 8 weeks. I'm leaner and I can see the muscles emerging. The WODs are always challenging, and the coaches push you and motivate you with humor and good music. We are canceling our YMCA membership because CrossFit is our new gym - and it's the only one we need. I can see why people get so into it, you have little wins and gain strength on a regular basis, which keeps you going back for more. And you always end up doing more than you thought you could. I highly recommend Albany Crossfit and CrossFit Clifton Park. PS - My husband goes to Albany CrossFit (closer to his office) and feels the same way I do about the coaches and the workouts. Original Review: I am new to Albany CrossFit, and CrossFit in general. I just completed the On Ramp program at the Albany location and now 2 full fledged classes at their Clifton Park location. And I love it! I go to the new Clifton Park location as it's closer to my home and I am really pleased by the new facility. The coaches have been great and are encouraging, and take the time to make sure that I am using proper form. This workout is tough, exhausting - and wonderful. The time flies by, it's never dull and I find it motivating. I had a different experience than ColleenD, we were in some of the On Ramp classes together. I felt that the coaches were helpful, and did push us to work hard. But they also listened if you said you had an injury or issue and backed off, as I witnessed in class. I remember being told to err on the side of backing off in the first month rather than risking injury, my impression was they want us to build strength at a reasonable pace. As far as the diet, I understood that CrossFit encourages the Paleo diet, and I agree with some of the diet tips and some I do not. I am fine listening to someone make suggestions they believe in, and I can utilize what I agree with and not use what I don't, it was a brief discussion and I didn't feel that it was overbearing. As a woman in CrossFit, I feel respected and treated the same as the men in class. The people in my class have been welcoming and helpful. I think as with anything, some people become die hard and really into it, probably because it makes them feel good, but I don't get a feeling it's a "cult". I would recommend Albany CrossFit and Clifton Park CrossFit to friends. I went with 4 stars solely because I've only been to 2 classes so far, though my sense is over time it will be a 5 star review. read more

What's with all the hostility? So what, you didn't like Crossfit. It's not for everyone. Is Crossfit different? Yup! Does Crossfit require a lot of effort and a certain amount of dedication? Yup! Will it meet your fitness requirements if you are willing to adjust your attitude? Absolutely. I have been Crossfitting for about 2 to 3 years on my own, doing the WOD's and checking out the videos to learn some of the movements. There has been a learning curve and some challenges. I have been into weight lifting, martial arts and a variety of aerobic activities all of my adult life, for about....lets just say I have probably spent more time sweating under stacks of weights than most of the posters on here have been alive. My wife (the brains in our outfit) saw that Crossfit Clifton Park was opening and suggested that I join and learn the proper movements and exercises. So, I tried it and WOW! I have been injured too many times to count throughout the years doing my "training" routines and in 3 weeks (3 freakin' weeks!) at CCP and I realized why. I have literally been doing damn near everything wrong. I am not so warped in my attitude that I feel that I can't learn something new, no matter what. Teach me a better way, and I am a happy camper. The message is consistent from all of the coaches: learn the proper, safe movements for all of your basic exercises and eventually it will allow you to build into the more intense and ballistic (my term) movements. I have yet to hear anything from my coaches but encouragement. Sean, Eric, Ian, Kevin and Murph have each put their personal touch on the exercises but they are all almost eerily consistent in hitting the primary points of each exercise. I am a proud Albany/ Clifton Park Crossfitter. Am I an elite athlete? I doubt it, but weenies that get wrapped around the axle over that phrase should really consider shutting there cake holes and head over to Planet Weirdness, work on their tan, and complain about someone grunting or sweating too much. As is always the case (at least with me) when I name names, I leave someone important out. As a very proud member of Albany CrossFit, and living proof of what they can do for you I felt compelled to respond with a review of the place that inspired me to make the greatest lifestyle choice I've ever made. First and foremost I would like to say CrossFit may not be for everyone, and that's fine, there are many other things out there that may fit other people better. CrossFit is a lifestyle, a community as well your place to workout, and at Albany CrossFit there isn't a better fitness program in the country. At Albany CrossFit you are provided with the greatest staff of coaches out there, and every single one of them is there to help you and have fantastic expertise. And if you ever have an issue or doubt that CrossFit may not be for you they're all very approachable and will be willing to discuss such a situation, and will be straight forward with you as well. Albany CrossFit is just like anything, in order to get great results you have to be willing to work hard, they give you the tools and direction you need, but it is up to you to put in the work. Along with the great Coaching staff at Albany CrossFit, the community is like no other, everyone is extremely supportive and it really helps keep your motivation high and get you through some tough workouts. I am officially in my 8th month of crossfitting and I've mentally committed myself to being a lifetime member. While I absolutely love it, I didn't initially feel this way. I came to Albany Crossfit by way of referral from my fiance. He had been crossfitting for well over a year before he convinced me to come check it out. Walking into the elements course (now known as on-ramp) I was completely intimidated by the barbells and weights. I remember asking myself what I had gotten myself into. My body had never experienced a workout like that before! I was sorer than sore from all the air squats! The first few classes I felt completely disconnected from my body-- I could hear the words the coaches were telling me, but my mind and body were having difficulty making it happen. But I kept at it, and it wasn't long before I was bit by the crossfit bug. Since then, it's become evident to me that not only have I invested in myself, but the coaches have also invested in me. I want to see what I can do just as much as they do. And it's because of that, I continue to drive forward and push my "limits." Encouragement and desire have become powerful motivators. I can without a doubt assert that it was crossfit that helped me keep my sanity in my final semester of nursing school. My life has truly been changed by my experience at ACF. I've attained this ridiculous level of mental toughness and self-confidence I never thought possible, and I've never been slimmer or more toned than I am right now. With the help of some very dedicated coaches, I've adapted my nutrition to complement my performance goals in crossfit. Wow! Has it made a difference! I can physically see and feel the improvements week after week! When I reflect on the fact that this is only the beginning, I get excited about the possibilities of my future. I currently crossfit 5 days a week and if there were more hours in the day, I'd spend even more time before and after WODs working on my weaknesses. Loving Albany Crossfit is easy. One coach finds it necessary to remove his shirt every time the wind changes. Seriously, while others are layering up, he is stripping. We get it, you like your body, enough. I would love to list all the other interesting behavior you will observe by the coaching staff but the coaching staff and the members are actually one unit. One the business website they list like 20 coaches. The reality is everyone of them thinks they are Phil Jackson and will have no problem informing you that your past injuries are all in your head. Torn rotator cuff, get it over head anyway. Past knee surgery, get your knees below parallel. The place is an extension of a college frat for many of the members. The girls in good shape wear practically bathing suits to the gym. And the coaches have no problem letting those girls know how great they look, they even follow it up with a nice slap on the ass. I would never bring my girlfriend to that place. The members have the habit of calling themselves the elite athletes even if they are no better than you are at crossfit and you just started. What else? The prices are out of control. Next to 200 dollars per month to listen to how unfit you are and watch the other members be sexually harassed? Eek! Methinks not. If you are into cults, like members who don't blink telling you how great it is to be a part of a family, like coaches who act like 13 year olds and think they are drop dead sexual animals, feel like putting down $200 and are ready to be told that you are not really trying if you can't do the movements as they want then Albany Crossfit is the place for you. If you want a nice place to work out then there are plenty of gyms that charge 10 per month. I looked over the list of next to 50 reviews that have been removed. I wish I knew how insecure the owner of the gym is before laying down cash for boot camp and my first month. I know he'll probably release those who have sworn the Albany Crossfit oath to ridicule and harass me but I think it should be said that this gym is really for those that want to relive their college glory days or who are lonely and desperate. read more

I am not a member of Albany CrossFit and have only been there once for a competition last September. Jason planned what he thought was going to be a small local competition which quickly flourished into a massive event. While he may have panicked internally, you would have never known it from the outside looking in. He and his staff did a fantastic job running a well organized event and some of his trainers and members probably sacrificed their day of competing in order to help out with the competition. Since then I have been following the site and some of the members either on facebook or their blogs and have seen tremendous improvements over the past year in both their physical appearance as well as their form, technique and strength. Albany CrossFit is a very well respected affiliate throughout the country, especially in the Northeast, as that was proven with the attention from the main site during the week leading up to the Regionals. The members of Albany CrossFit are also very fortunate to have a guy like Jason running the show up there as anyone who knows him or has even met him knows how deep his passion is for CrossFit and his affiliate. I was able to pick his brain during my Level 1 Cert at CrossFit Virtuosity a little and he was more than willing to spend any amount of time to answer any questions and teach the proper techniques to me, especially with my muscle ups. I think it's great that there is a forum for open opinion and reviews on here but a lot of it will have to be taken with a grain of salt. In my experience with CrossFit I have come across a lot of Haters who no matter what results you show them will not change their opinion of our sport.I view their opinions as naive due to their stubborness and unwillingness to change. Approximately 2 years ago I graduated from college after experiencing 4 years of D3 college lacrosse. It was an amazing experience and something I cherished. Upon graduation a void was created and I tried desperately to fill it. My first attempt was joining Planet Fitness and continuing the 3 sets of 10 weight training that I had been doing since my senior year of high school. Things became stagnant very quickly with the same bland routine. I was leaving the gym feeling unsatisfied with my current workout regimen. I even attempted to make changes that just didn't work well and did not fit into the realm of a globo gym like PF. Concurrently during this process I had started my medical education. Personally there is a direct correlation with how I perform in school and how I feel about my overall fitness and health. As you can imagine as things became more stagnant my grades began to decline in school. About 2/3 into my first year of medical school all of this stagnation came to a head with me bombing a test. I knew I had to make a change. It just so happened that we had a week off following this exam and I went down to visit my brother who recommended switching it up maybe trying this thing he heard about called crossfit. I spent the rest of the week with my brother and when I arrived back in Albany I signed up for a free class the following day. I knew after the first class that this training methodology could be something that fills the void in my life and it has. With the support and guidance of both the training staff and the community itself I have become faster, stronger, and smarter about my fitness, form, and overall health. I could have NEVER done this on my own and I realize this. This is why I don't take the relationships I've formed via Albany Crossfit for granted. I love Albany Crossfit. I have been working out there on and off for about a year and whenever I am going consistently I always feel great. My school schedule has me in town for a month or two and then back home for breaks so it is hard for me to stick with a particular gym because I am not in the same place for too long at any given time. I really liked the coaches at crossfit though. They certainly do have their point of view and stick to it no matter what, but they are very knowledgeable and their point of view usually makes a lot of sense so their stubbornness amuses me! The owner, Jason, is really nice. The different coaches keep track of how you are progressing and try to make sure you are doing everything correctly. I used to go to morning classes with Tom D. a lot and he rocked it! However, they let some new kid start teaching some of his time frames and the kid was arrogant and annoying so that is probably part of the reason I stopped going. Crossfit definitely gave me a butt-kicking workout and I really enjoyed going while I was. Now that school has started again I want to go back and try to get myself back into it (as long as that annoying kid is not coaching when I want to go)! *One last thing, sometimes when I went there would be a kid playing in the other room with one of the coaches dogs. Some people might not like this but I thought it was awesome. It is hard for parents to stay active and find time to do something healthy so I liked the crossfit gave them the option to bring their kids so they could workout. I also love dogs, so I like that the coaches bring their k9 friends to work! read more

Normally I dont participate in these kinds of forums, as they tend to be an outlet for the few bad apples out there. I give Jay and the team at ACF feedback all the time. My spirit, my body and my zest for life are a daily testament to my experience at ACF. However, I am choosing to make my declaration in this forum this one time. Tomorrow and the next day and the next, Jay and his team will hear my thank yous in person. ACF is just like anything else in life. You reap what you sow. I come in, hit my WOD, swing my KBs and take on whatever challenge is presented. I take my feedback like a big girl. Don't count a crappy rep. Don't excuse my bad form. Don't let me give up on myself. In return, I will come in. I will cheer on my peers. I will listen. I will appreciate you. I can give you my true life testimony. I can tell you how overweight I was. How lost I was. How unsatisfied with life I was. But I won't. What I will tell you is almost a year ago I walked in with a great friend. I did my first American KB swing and box jump workout. I was hooked. I did my elements. I bought my Vibrams. I learned about better nutrition. I have met some of the most amazing people who show me every day how great this ACF family of ours is. I have to say that I have belonged to many gyms.. and I have never felt so welcomed as I do at Albany Crossfit and Crossfit Clifton Park. Other people coming up and introdrucing themselves and actually care about getting to know you. The coaches are amazing.They truely care about getting you heathy and fit. I have had the opprotunity to have some 1:1 converstations with many of the coaches and they all have given me some great tips on ways to improve my diet and techniques. I had joined back in april and went for a month or two but then life got busy..... the owner actually emailed me to see where I had been and if things were ok... getting be back on track to come back in. (what other gym would contact you???) I have now made a committment to get in there on a regular basis and I am already seeing results. Sure the workouts can seem intimitadting.. and yes you will work your butt off.. but if you can get past the fact you will have to scale (modify) the work outs when you first start, and your not afraid to ask for help... you'll quickly see why so many love Crossfit. If you dont want a good workout.. then dont come to Crossfit! :) read more

LOVE IT! Like the other reviewer, CrossFit is not something I EVER thought I would do. I like exercising, but hate doing it in front of people and hate working in groups with people I do not know. However, CrossFit really is unique as in that stuff does not bother me here. Even though you are working out with a lot of other people, everyone is working so hard that they can't look at you because they are focusing too much on their own form and workout. I have been going 3x/week for 3 weeks now and already feel how much harder my arms are. I would be lying if I said my whole body has already been transformed...but I definitely do see little differences. I am still scared every single time I walk in the door for the wod, but now when I leave I feel a little less sore and a little more proud of myself. I am definitely liking it more and getting to know the people everyday! read more

I am new to Albany Crossfit. I just finished my on~ramp and am now able to do regular classes. I had a meniscus injury. Actually I tore my knee apart and had reconstructive knee surgery twice and had a ligament replacement. My air squats are getting better every day. There are some movements that I'm not comfortable with....yet. And coach Kevin has tailored my workout to accommodate my needs. But it's a partnership. I need to tell him what I'm experiencing, and trust his expertise in providing me with the proper workout. This is true of every Albany Crossfit coach. That's the beauty of it. They can scale any workout to any level athlete. And I am amazed at not only what I can do, but how much of it. And by how much fun it is. And that's the piece I think that some miss out on. You're only limited by your attitude. read more

I pick things up and put things down... Quite the opposite here at ACF. I have been at Albany Crossfit for a year and a half now... I cannot imagine my life with out crossfit. ACF provides you with a stellar place to work out (both locations), knowledgeable staff and coaches who are willing to work with you one on one in order to keep you safe and make your work outs accurate. There is always a buzz in the air when you enter the doors, there is always a need to push yourself a litter further when you come in. Weather you're a seasoned elite crossfitter or a person who comes in off the street for their first work out ever, you will be welcomed with open arms by people and who are willing to help you and cheer you on... I have been a member of Albany crossfit for 1 year. I am by far the fittest I have ever been. The members are encouraging and friendly. One thing that makes Albany Crossfit different from other gyms is the group setting. Everyday I come in I am reminded of when I participated on sports teams in high school. I have teammates and coaches, and we train hard to be better everyday. Furthermore Crossfit has had very positive effects on me physically. I am proud to put on jeans that used to be too tight to wear and to wear my bathing suit this summer. It is not only my workout but it my hobby. Luckily my hobby helps me be a healthier person. I would recommend Albany cross fit to people that are looking for a fun workout routine and won't mind making some friends along the way. read more

I'm fairly new to CrossFit Albany (couple of months) but in my short time here, I've learned a few things: 1) It's very fun and very challenging at the same time. 2) I have shed a lot of weight already and accomplished things that I never would've thought I could do. 3) Being fit keeps me happy. The group classes and the coaches here have been able to give me everything I need to get better. Setting goals, and then hitting this gym and actually achieving them is what it's all about. I tried it out while in Albany on a family visit. I've visited several CrossFit gyms in several cities....and this one takes top honours. There was a wide variety of ability levels and the coaches did a great job of tailoring the workouts to the individuals. Strong community feeling here, maybe a little over the top in their loyalty to CrossFit, but hey it's something special they've got going here. read more
