If you're visiting Albany and looking for a place to take a stroll or job, this is like a mini-pine barrens (similar to what you might see in New Jersey). I would stay to the trails (Madison loop) to minimize the risk of catching ticks. In July 2024, it was pleasant in the early morning hours for a refreshing walk. However, there is not much shade on the walking trails, so it will be blazing hot mid-day. Street parking was relatively easy near the perimeter of the pine bush preserve. read more

I spent two days in Albany and I visited the Albany Pine Bush Preserve before leaving town. The Preserve is unique and I highly recommend checking it out. You can park in the complimentary spacious lot and then walk over to the welcome center. While it was closed due to Covid, one of the trails (the shortest one) starts there. The shortest trail has information along the way informing you about what a preserve is, conversation efforts, the animals, and the plants that are in the park. Pine brush is different than what you typically see at a park so this was a first for me. It was cool to see how it develops (hint: fire) and learn why this type of habitat is important. There are also longer trails so you can get a workout and see more of the preserve. read more

My wife and I came here for a walk recently on a Saturday with several goals in mind. We wanted to take pictures and get some inspiration for a nature scene we wanted to paint. We wanted the exercise (well, "want" isn't the right word). And we wanted to explore this place for our first time. Though it was a hot afternoon we pushed through and brought our dog. First, because of the pandemic several things were closed (the Discovery Center, all in-person instructional classes) and their hours were limited to closing at 4PM. This seems really early for a park, but maybe it is for security reasons. And in fact, they might have had these hours before the pandemic. But, if you want to come and watch the sunset you better hope it occurs by 4PM. I also don't think the bathrooms are open but I didn't check. There were multiple trails and we took the "yellow" one (2.6 miles), which seemed the largest and strolled in a big circle around the area. We went clockwise and found the first half went through the woods and up and down hills. It was nice, though by the mid-way point I was hot. Water would have helped, as would have air conditioning. We saw many pretty scenes of trees, plants (but not many flowers), and grasses. Very few animals were encountered, which might be normal. The second half was more "open" and consisted of paths next to fields, capped landfill mounts, and roads. I think we took the more interesting direction, as we had the most energy in places that were the most scenically beautiful. By the end, when we were tired and just wanted it to end, I wouldn't have cared if it was Mount Fuji, a landfill, or a parking lot. Actually, I wanted the parking lot as that was where our water was. Other notes: I think we encountered one bench about the midway point. Aside from that, they don't add the ability to stop and sit and rest. Maybe they think no one is stupid enough to walk in the 90-degree heat. Also, once you are out I don't think there are any shortcuts back so if you do the long one be warned. In all, we got a lot of nice pictures and a bit of exercise. Mission accomplished! read more

As someone who's working on the various peak lists in the Northeast, the Pine Bush is generally far below the level of difficulty of what I hike in an average week. But if work and weather keep me from going far from home, this is my go-to destination for an hour or two in nature. Ample parking and enough trailheads that, even on a weekend, you can often find somewhere with few other people. The sandy soil means that trails generally stay dry after the rain. Plus, during the day, the visitors center at Trailhead 1 has flush toilets. Are there ticks? Yes. Are there other animals? Yes. You're outdoors and in the woods, so you're going to get that. But some of those animals are highly endangered and found few other places in the world. For example, the Karner Blue butterfly, which appears twice a year, is easiest to find at this preserve. Other plants and animals are found nowhere else in the region. The most amazing thing about this wild and natural place? It's only 15 minutes from downtown Albany. What's not to like about that? read more

Stopped here for a bit, on the way home, after we spent some time at Saratoga NHP. My boys (5-3) loved this place. The discovery center was great, the wonderful woman at the front desk had binoculors for the boys to use and there were several activities inside and many things to pique their interest. We then spent some time outside exploring the paths around the building. Really a well set up place, we didnt sample the trails very much as it began to rain and we had to go. The place is well maintained and full of information. We will be back. read more

Review for both the Pine Bush Preserve Trails and the Discovery Center / Museum - both five stars and a mustn't-miss worthwhile place to visit if you're visiting from out of town, among the truly unique places in the area. The preserve is a patchwork of lands that have been wrested back from the brink of irrevocable loss due to encroaching development, that constitute nevertheless one of the largest pine barrens in the world, and the largest tract of urban pine barren anywhere. In terms of surviving size and scope this is second in North America only to the New Jersey Pine Barrens, is the largest inland barren anywhere, and it's fairly different from other pine barrens I've been to. There are eight different trail heads - separated mostly, unfortunately, by busy roads because of the nature of the preserve - so the best place to start is probably at the Discovery Center, which does triple duty as a natural history museum, headquarters for the park and its preservation groups, and as a visitor's center for the trail areas. The trails range from short 20 minute hikes to all-day treks, and they all have different characteristics and points of interest. There are over 80 endangered plant and animal species represented, and some truly rare ones, including the unique Karner Blue butterfly (discovered by none other than Nabokov!) which is the sort of mascot of the place. One of the rather fun things about the trails here is they're open all day and all night every day of the year -- except when closed off for the occasional prescribed burn or trail restoration -- so you can snowshoe here in the winter or take a springtime wildflower stroll or a sweaty summer hike or do a hybrid leaf-peeping expedition of the habitats in the autumn. (They have sponsored nighttime hikes, including one at Halloween.) It changes a lot, the colors can be quite striking due to the acidity and sandy soil, and the microclimates are amazing - some trails you'll find a different micro-forest around each bend and over every rise. There's also some human history here and there of some note, such as the Truaux tavern site from 1792. Trails tend to be relatively gentle and wide, on soft sandy soils, although here and there short climbs get a little steep. It's easy hiking for the most part. The Discovery Center is a nearly perfect small but very modern museum at the address listed here (on New Karner between Central and Washington Extension, opposite Old State Rd.). Admission is free (already a couple of stars there) and the exhibits are both engaging and educational, and will appeal to both kids and adults. There are interactive videos where you can control the film of a controlled burn fire, overlay maps, make-your-own-message interactive video stations, and some cool pressure-sensitive tiles that will make animals noises where you have to try to locate the animal. There's a model of a pine tree that shows the root system in life-size, and a number of exhibits about particular species found here, as well as an extensive history of how the habitat was wrested back from development and the challenges it still faces. There's a very small but decent gift shop (not hideously overpriced, and not filled with too much in the way of unrelated items), but no snack bar. You will also have to hike-in and trash-out your waste on your own, as is the modern style. The visitor's center is closed Monday but otherwise keeps decent hours, and you can always park there when the center is closed as well. They keep good supplies of maps at the trailhead sites and there are many guided activities, often free. This is one of those rare places that is both a true center of local natural history heritage and a national treasure, somewhat hidden from public view by the fact it's neither a national nor state park but a unique sort of hybrid public-private (non-profit) partnership with a lot of roots in local preservation groups and individual towns. read more

I hadn't heard anything about the Pine Bush until I was looking for a park that wasn't Washington Park, so I looked for parks on Yelp and this one came up. I was immediately in love. I even decided to volunteer once a week last summer. It was one of the best experiences of my adult life so far. It has completely changed my outlook and career path. The Albany Pine Bush Preserve is a pine barrens (one of the largest inland barrens of its kind) and one of the very last refuges for a rare species of butterfly called the Karner Blue. With an ever-growing acreage currently somewhere around 3,200, you'll never get bored. The landscape varies greatly from trail to trail. Start behind the Discovery Center and you'll see how it's basically a desert with little else growing there besides pitch pines, bushes (hence the name) and shrubs. Cross 155 and you're in a more deciduous type woods with a more diverse undergrowth (made largely of decidedly invasive species). Even after working closely with the trail stewards for 6 months, there is still much that I haven't explored. The Great Dunes trail is my personal favorite, with huge sprawling sand dunes, it's the closest thing you can get to the Sahara in this part of the world. Have kids? The Discovery Center is a great place for them. Lots of activities and exhibits for them. There are even summer programs and camps for them to participate in if they really like it there. Not just for kids, though, the staff are all very knowledgeable. If you have any questions, there will be someone nearby who can answer them. Everyone I met was extremely welcoming and friendly. This will be the place I miss most about Albany when I move away later this year. read more

The ranger station just opened for the year and now is the perfect time to check out this wilderness in the middle of the city. I didn't see any Blue Karner butterflies but I am sure they are out there, and the well marked trails make this a pleasant outing whether you have a few minutes or half a day. Albany is one of the rare spots in the country to host a pine barrens (a plant community composed primarily of pitch pines and scrub oak that grows on sandy glacial soil) and I'm sure the only one that supports it so well. We are fortunate to have this mini-getaway in our midst so take advantage. read more

I had come here a few weeks ago to do some trail running. The trails are very well-marked and easy to navigate and the difficulty level is pretty low. The foliage wasn't much to see this time of year, but that's to be expected. There are other reviews mentioning ticks and there is plenty of signage along the trails to warn you about them as well. I would say that a hike through here (while dressed properly) would be fine, but I wouldn't come trail running here again due to the worry of getting a tick. read more

Scratching my head at people complaining about ticks or other nasty bugs when taking a walk in the WOODS! It's called nature, folks! Know where you're going and be prepared, that's all there is to it. Go take a hike on Central Ave, if you're so afraid of bugs! I'm guessing you're not so concerned about cars wheezing by you, and their impact on health and environment? Anyway, the PB is a lovely place for short hikes, we go there often, in all seasons. Pretty small museum and shop as well, and friendly staff. Minus one star for the proximity of a landfill and of course the Thruway crossing the woods. But that's just human stupidity. read more

I regularly hike through the trails in the Pine Bush and love it. It's a great way to escape the bustle of the city and keep in touch with nature. I love to just walk around through these woods and let my imagination go wild. It's also kind of a treasure as it's one of the few large pine barrens of it's kind. I grew up in the New Jersey pine barrens, so that makes it particularly special for me. I usually see several kinds of birds as I hike, chirping away. Not so much for other kinds of animals but I have seen chipmunks and the occasional rabbit. Still in search of the karner blue butterfly! The trails are well marked and varied, so if you want a nice short hike that will take you back to where you started, you can do that. If you want a longer adventure where you'll probably have to decide where you want to turn back, that's also possible. Very thankful that we have this wonderful forest and its trails right here in Albany. read more

I went hiking at the Albany Pine Bush Preserve with my brother and sister-in-law last weekend. I believe they are planning to build a larger/better nature center, so the parking lot is under construction and a little daunting. But the trails were beautiful and we had a great time hiking around for a couple hours. After we were done our hike, we went into the nature center. The staff was really friendly, and the displays were very interesting and informative. It would be a great place to take kids to on the weekend or for a school trip. But heck, I thought it was great, and I'm 26 years old. Next time I am in Albany, I'll probably go hike another trail. Beautiful preserve! read more

This place is absolutely lovely and peaceful BUT we ended up leaving with a ton of ticks even after spraying ourselves with DEET. When we checked our dog before getting her into the car she had at least 4 ticks on her and that is that we barely stopped on the trail. When we got home we found another 3 and my husband found 2 on himself. We would love to go back but the thought of coming home with ticks is just not appealing. read more

A park that is easy to get to...but...it suffers for it. You won't feel totally in the wild in this park...although the trails do meander for a distance. Sadly other visitors leave lots of trash along the trails...tragic. A few parts of the trails go right along giant construction projects. All in all, a decent walk through nature, but there are far better choices if you just drive a little further. P.S. Beware of ticks! Wear socks, long pants! read more
