Wow what a turnaround! For the last 12+ years, both Tops Markets in Saranac Lake were pretty dumpy…read moreand the stores were poorly stocked and didn't feel clean. The one across from Aldi closed. Dropped in the downtown store the week before Memorial Day and was quite impressed. Cleaner and spruced up a bit. Better quality produce that looked fresh, excellent meats, and well stocked shelves. Really enjoyed our T-bones, USDA choice but marbled like prime! Hope Tops keeps it up. On a second visit, the young cashier should give up trying to juggle the food from one hand to the other. He missed!

The Tops Market experience:…read more Went to Tops Market this past Monday. They were rearranging their produce section, mid-morning (not before nor after hours, as logic would suggest). There were four employees, including one Store Manager, standing around watching one employee work, moving signage, pricing labels, produce, etc. Those four other employees, including that one Store Manager, were just getting in the way of shoppers, whom were trying to find the mess of produce. As I asked for parsley, lettuce, and a few other items, no one could tell me where they were. Tried to go back to Tops Market the following Wednesday, late morning. There were no peaches, nor lettuce, nor Roma tomatoes, nor green onions, nor a number of other produce items yet stocked for the day. Upon asking if I could get some of those items, an Employee simply said "they're not out yet". Tops Market recently merged with Price Chopper. For those that don't know, Tops Market has been through some very rough years, from numerous downsizings to bankruptcy to buyouts by private equity firms, to a management buyout, to a merger. Yet despite these desperate attempts to survive, they can't seem to comprehend the value of quality service. Tops is riddled with incompetence, laziness, lack of service, unfriendliness, unempowered employees, etc. It's no wonder Tops can't compete. I suggest Tops Markets change their tagline to Tops Unfriendly Markets.

I had a set day to pickup and due to my chronic illness, had times where I needed to pickup the following day. The owner, Gilles, and I messaged and he told me it was no problem if I picked up the following day when I needed. To my utter shock, I recently walked in on said next day to pickup my product and was outraged to be met with incredible anger and verbal abuse. Gilles yelled at me as soon as I entered the store, and soon after threatened to break my jars so I could be taught a lesson claiming I have to pick up another day instead. He was not open to have a calm conversation whatsoever. Without any prior communication in changing the status quo, I was met with such hostility and told I should think, use my brain, and anticipate what he was going to decide next. I couldn't believe how awfully he spoke to me and attacked my person. A friend of mine also noted rising hostility with her and stopped going. Without any prior warning as to what changed. I will never go back and I would not recommend this place to anyone. No one deserves to be spoken to in this manner. Truly disappointed that a business owner would treat his customers this way.

Every time we go here we have a great experience. The have well defined and ample parking, good signage and helpful staff. But the *best* part of going here - aside from all the family fun and photo ops - is the made 10 seconds ago apple cider donuts. These alone make the 1/2 drive or so from metro Ottawa to Mountain - plus, if you avoid the big highways, it's also a lovely country drive. Would I recommend: Yes Would I return: Yes - we go every fall for our favorite applies.

Depending on the season or the time in the season they will have different types of things to pick. For us we had a selection of 3 types of apples and the bags were 20$ for 10 lbs or 30 $ for 20 lbs but I must say we hate about 5 lbs each for free during the process. They have an extremely fun corn maze, a lovely short forest walk (less than 1 km), fun games for the kids all over the area and the most AMAZING apple dough doughnuts. Seriously when its cold outside a warm sugar glazed apple doughnut it the cure for everything. Lots of fun, I am sure we will come back next year to also pick corn. Almost forgot not only do dogs are allowed they have doggy bags (in case you forgot) all over the place !
