Love this place!!!! Fell in love with this place when we were staying in Gatlinburg for the weekend. I came across their pottery when we were checking into our cabin for the weekend. The pieces caught my eye in the lobby and I had a hunch that they were in the area. After a quick Yelp search, there they are, in Gatlinburg!!! We've been here twice in both of our trips to the area. My parents and I stopped here to look at the antique store next door and because I am very interested in ceramics. I urgently had to use the restroom but they yelled at me to "just go to the gas station" because you had to pay for something in order to use their restroom. My parents paid and then heard the same rude women yelling at another family that "since they have their own bathroom it's really hard cause everyone wants to use it and not buy things." I thought people in the mountains were supposed to be kind. Wish the staff could have found five minutes to be kind to their customers. read more

I am a repeat customer of Alewine. Correction: I was going to be a repeat customer. But Alewine's allergy to customer service prevented this. Can it kill them to say hello to a customer? Apparently so. A couple of years ago, my wife and I purchased cups here that we enjoyed a lot and wanted to buy more to go with them. The customer service wasn't great then but at least we were acknowledged, and after some prodding by me, an employee told us how their pottery was made. This time, we wandered through their various rooms for at least 10 minutes, not once being greeted by any of the several employees. We left and bought our cups elsewhere. ADDENDUM: Wife and I were driving past their smaller location and she insisted on stopping in. She wanted to look for a gift for a coworker and also see if the customer service at the smaller location was as bad as the Gatlinburg location. We were not disappointed. We got poor customer service there but in a totally different way. When we pulled up, the friendly employee (the only one working) was outside smoking a cigarette and chatting with her friends. She greeted us and went right back to smoking. We went inside and looked around for many minutes. She didn't come inside for a long time as she was so busy talking to her friends. Eventually she finally came in and when she did she was amiable, but one would think talking to customers should take priority over a cigarette break. read more

My grandmother and I stopped at Alewine Pottery during a recent visit to the Smoky Mountains. I love the idea of owning a "one of a kind" piece of pottery that no one else has, so I was eager to browse the offerings. We were promptly greeted as we entered. It was a chilly day, so we also enjoyed sitting by the fire a bit before we shopped. Alewine offers a huge variety of pottery pieces, from coasters to spoon rests to coffee mugs to plates and mixing bowls. I was especially interested in shopping their Christmas section. There were many Christmas pieces to choose from...I ended up deciding on a beautiful green and red candle holder with three Christmas tree cutouts. Grandmama eyed one of the beautiful leaf pattern batter bowls, but opted for a coffee mug instead. I'd seen reviews stating that there was a spot in the store that you could watch someone actually making pottery, but I never saw anyone doing that while we were. I did see a lady coming into the store from behind a closed door carrying new pieces to put on display, but never actually saw anyone making the new pieces. We were there during Thanksgiving week, so maybe Mr. Alewine was spending time with family. Maybe I just plain missed it. Either way, I was a bit disappointed to miss out. The cashier was friendly and helpful, and she wrapped our pieces really well before bagging them, so they wouldn't get broken on the trek home. We really enjoyed our visit to Alewine Pottery and will visit them again on our next trip to the Smokies. Hopefully next time we can catch the potter in action! read more

My wife and I decided to make a stop at Alewine Pottery prior to our road trip home. The shop was easy to find and provides ample parking to say the least. We had the pleasure of listening to a band quietly playing a song fit for a beautiful spring morning as we made our way toward the outdoor displays. Without having the most experience in pottery we were both very impressed with the quality of the craftsmanship. The prices are somewhat high however you can actually feel why these pieces are priced the way they are. The staff was laid back and genuinely sweet. My family enjoyed watching the workers make the pottery (they have a very large viewing area, so many people can watch at the same time), and it was nice that they had an area for kids to play with some toys if they got bored while we shopped There is also a fireplace with rocking chairs situated around it to just kick back and talk for a few minutes. Their designs are quite original. They have many an item that they have taken a leaf and pressed into the wet clay, which leaves a unique, and beautiful imprint on the pottery. The glazes they use are bright and come in many colors. They have many items; from oil lamps, to drinkware, place settings, and lamps... and everyting in between. If you are looking for cheap and inexpensive pottery, this probably isn't the place (although they have discount items up front, and a few less expensive items near the back of the store, such as the aforementioned oil lamps), but if you are looking to buy something original, and beautiful, and that shows true artistry or just want to enjoy the artwork, then you should check this place out. read more

Every time we go to Gatlinburg, we stop by Alewine Pottery. We have so many fun items from here that always remind us of the good time spent here. I even bought a pitcher and a platter to take for my mom in India and now she has a piece of Gatlinburg in her house on the other side of the globe. We both love pottery and this place is amazing. Prices are very reasonable for the craftsmanship, artistry and quality of every single piece. At one point, I had about six pieces set aside to purchase and narrowed it down to four (only so I could do shopping at some of the other artisans in the Arts and Crafts Community). I think the pottery here is really nice-I have several pieces-love the way they use the leaves. Over the years the prices have gone up quite a bit and the service has gone down. We were there on a Sunday morning in March and the lady seemed nonplussed when we walked in. In the busy season you can watch them make stuff and there's music outside sometimes. read more

My husband and and I have been buying pieces from this pottery store since they have opened. We have been coming to Gatlinburg almost every year with our family for the better part of 40 years. We lost our house and almost all of our contents to a fire last year. Not one of the Alewine pieces was destroyed. They withstood the heat of the fire and cleaned up beautifully.
