It takes them at least 3 days to return a text message. And then their response is 2 words at most. They take terrible photos for online auction and insist the photos are great. Their fees over the top. Terrible experience from beginning to end. read more

I signed up for Alexcooper.com to bid on real estate listing. To bid on the listing you have to enter your credit card information which I did. I never bided on any items. After a few months, I see a pre-authorization charge on my credit card for 1,655.83. I called them and they said that I purchase some jewelry or something. Then I said that I did not. Then, the woman argued with me that I did win an auction. I then said that I did not. Then she says hold on. Then this rude guy gets on the phone and says that I won the online auction. Then I repeat what I told the lady that I did not win any auction. Then I log in to my Alex Cooper account and I told him that there is no auction activity in my account. Then Mr. Rude guy asked me my name, home, and email address. Then I tell him. Then he says "Oh, there is another person with your same first and last name." So they charge my credit card account for some items that I did not bid on and then they were going to send him the items. I told him that they need to get their stuff in order. Bought a rental duplex where owner did minor renovations, raised rent, got new tenants, and flipped the building. The auctioneer will not disclose tenant info, which is understandable, but the tenants conveyed would never pass a credit check, not were the downstairs HVAC or water heaters permitted and inspected by the City. Ask if your tenants passed a credit check, if appliances were inspected, look for outstanding code violations on the City's website. Check that your zoning for use and occupancy is correct. Baltimore is a highly regulated rentals market, and the City will be on you as soon as you purchase a property. It can be hard to get this information from the seller when purchasing via auction. Be prepared to spend a few thousands to make your property compliant. read more

BEWARE ! DONT BE FOOLED like I was. They specifically told me they would not take any of my items unless they could get $300 for it. So what would that lead a person to believe? I was left with the impression that each item I surrendered to their care and expertise to sell for me would render at least $300, less their commission. That is not at all the case! I brought to them a stunning original pastel work signed by Maria Kuleszyna an original drawing of Bambi, and a gorgeous hand painted 4' x6' glass screen room divider from Japan. I was SHOCKED to receive 2 checks in the mail totaling less than $75 payment for ALL 3 items ! They are supposed to be the experts. I could have sold the screen alone, by myself on Facebook marketplace or offer up for hundreds of dollars had I known about their deceiving practices. That is why I am taking the time to warn you about what happened to me. You'd be better off selling your things on your own. I wish I did read more

many have had horrible experiences with ALEX COOPER......stay away ! They listed a house as auction style with a start date/time and an end date/time. Offered realtors to show the house and then had an open house. instead of going thru the online auction bidding as per the terms of this sale, they "allegedly" decided to take an offer at the open house when nobody was advised that offers would be entertained at, before or after the open house. This was to be an online auction only. Sonething very shady going on with this company and with the realtor/agent working for them. STAY AWAY FROM ALEX COOPER. read more

Well, I frequently bid on items on the internet. On the last Discovery Auction I needed to use a different credit card. Card on file was compromised. I left 3 messages asking for someone to call me back. It didn't happen. I was so frustrated I called the Real Estate division. A very nice man gave me the email addresses for three individuals. I did send them emails. I got no responses. Finally I called and left a message that reflected my displeasure. I got a call back. Finally! Upon picking up the items there was a delightful African American lady who was lovely. The merchandise was delivered and we wrapped it. We had some large items, and we were promised that someone would meet us at the back door to help us put the items into the car. It didn't happen. Alex Cooper is a long-time respected company. Someone is asleep at the wheel. If you wish to continue to be a Baltimore icon you need to pay more attention to all levels of service. Overall this was a very poor customer experience. Be aware, if you need something from this company, the people that work there are better than you. You are garbage and they are gold. So be precise and know exactly what you need and be clear because no matter what it is, you're wasting their time, so try not to waste too much of it. Called to get some information about a house. I spoke with Larry. He was incredibly rude and condescending. He couldn't understand what I was asking and couldn't have cared less to try to understand. This group instead of helping my elderly parents auction off veey high end antiques pretty much stole from my family. One of the owners came over to assess the contents of the old house and said he'd help auction off selected items that were valuable that have been in my family for generations. Basically they were items he knew he could take from the family's old house and tell my parents that the items will go to auction. Erte and Moss etchings, silver dining sets from the 1800s several other items. They came back to us with their bogus receipts saying the items sold for literally nothing. We are pretty sure they never went to auction and sold it for their own price. I'm serious. My parents were taken advantage of by this group. To take advantage of people in their late 70s and early 80s is a crime. Stay away from this group. read more

We listed our house through Alex Cooper in the fall. Their brokerage services are top notch. Specifically we dealt with Matt Cooper. He walked us through every detail, was hands on in preparing our house for photos and the listing and was available whenever we needed him. Matt helped get us too dollar for our house! Again, Matt was patient with us when looking for our forever home. He worked around our families schedule and walked us through the buying process again. If you are not a rug pro/connousieur or you don't have $5000 to spend on a rug, check out their online stock and go in with the **exact details** of the rug you want. If you are not a high roller, they probably won't pay much attention to you (understandably). While the website boasts the store to have one of the largest showrooms on the East coast with 30,000 square feet of rugs, I found it to be the size to be underwhelming and certainly not as big as I expected. **Tips: 1. They have a tremendous online selection, a must check before you go. 2. The have free shipping in the US 3. Check online for clearance sales which have ridiculously cheap rugs. I found one rug at a 90% discount, but they sell out very quickly. 4. I would only advise going in person if they have exactly what you want based on your online viewing or if you have tons of money to spend! read more

I sold a piece of jewelry with Alex Cooper which went fine, however, I had a long and exhaustive email conversation regarding getting many pieces of American Brilliant Period cut glass into their discovery auction. After they vetted the pieces they wanted to sell from my collection, I painstakingly packed them in bubble wrap and brought three tubs full to their warehouse. I was sorely disappointed when I saw the final auction listings for the glass items, which said nothing about their type or age (all being antique), included an expensive modern bohemian brand name piece (with original maker's sticker) without even mentioning the brand with other items that were totally unrelated, bundled them in two huge lots, and generally put little effort into the listings. Similar previous listings had gone for $20 - $40 which was not remotely worth the effort. I felt like my items were treated like garbage, and that they were attempting to sell them for as little as possible, so I pulled all of them from the auction. read more

I had a lot of things that I wanted to sell. So instead of listing them on Ebay, I decided to try a local auctioneer, ALEX COOPER. I figured since I had a lot of old items, that they would know more about them. I thought I had a better chance of selling through the auction house. HUGE MISTAKE! I had a large lot of marbles, including some antique German marbles. I knew they were worth over $500. They said the marbles will sell well. They did sell - but only for $30! They take 30%, so I ended up with $21. I felt sick, I wanted to cry! They told me all of their items were listed on four different sites, so they would get lots of exposure. I saw the marble lot listed on the Alex Cooper site, but when I went back and searched the other sites, they were not there. So, they were only listed on the Alex Cooper site. I had also given them a lot of jewelry. I was told jewelry sells really well. Yes, it does sell, but they didn't say it will be at a very low amount. I couldn't afford for all of the jewelry to sell at the reserve price, which was the reserve of the gold melt, and they don't count the diamonds. The jewelry I gave Alex Cooper to sell, wasn't auctioned yet, so I tried to pull the lots and just get them back. They said maybe if it were just one, but it would be too embarrassing for Alex Cooper. A friend knew that they were worth much more, and offered to give us twice the amount. I was telling my daughter how upset I was, and she said she would have liked to have one of the rings. So, I tried to pull just one, so I could give one to my daughter. I even offered to pay the fee, but they would not even pull the one lot. So, I am the one that gets screwed. They said well maybe they won't sell, and you can get them back. I knew the auction wasn't going to get what the jewelry was worth because many of the details were not included in the description, and they didn't specify the quality of the diamonds. Then they told me they do not grade cluster diamond rings, only diamond solitaires. These were diamond bands, with 5 diamonds across, not just tiny clusters. I told them I really wanted to pull that one lot, but they said, hopefully, the buyer won't pay for them and you'll receive them back. I am sure they will reply saying I signed a contract. I know I signed the contract, but once I lost so much on the first lot, I felt as if I have been deceived. So, now I am stuck. I got approximately $1,700 for all of the jewelry. By pulling previous appraisals and comparable estimates, it should have valued over $4,600. I am left with this huge sinking feeling in my stomach. Someone got some nice things for much lower than their value. I feel like I got ripped off! read more

I found many items that I wanted to bid on the Alex Cooper site (on Ebay). I went through the process to register to be able to bid. Contacted the auctioneer (Alex Cooper via Ebay) and they told me everything was good to go. I thought it strange that in their disclosure they indicated early bids could be placed but when I attempted to do so the bids wouldn't go through. Ebay said it was the auctions fault and even Ebay couldn't bid. After 2 hours on the phone just after the auction began on Saturday morning at 10am I realized that this was a dead end and I looked for another way to be able to bid on the multiple items I wanted. I went to liveauctioneers.com where I saw this same auction presented. I again marked the items I wished to bid on and after attempting to register with them was denied registration! What? How do these people run their business? Definitely going through the proper channels does not work! I'm very disappointed with the manner in which this business is run. If there is an item or items you really want...look elsewhere. This place will suck you in and then lock you out. Such a huge waste of time! read more

Coopers is the Baltimore areas high end auction house. They hold large auctions about once every six weeks or so. I often attend and browse what's available, and they have great eclectic mixes of Collectibles and investment quality pieces. From what I've heard they aren't the easiest place to consign with, but then again almost all auction houses take advantage of their consignors. As a place to purchase a painting or piece of furniture, you can rely on their expertise. read more

After attending a number of auctions at Cooper's Towson gallery, a few years ago I happened upon the firm's first dedicated online antique auction. It was a week or so before closing date, yet very few bids were posted for any of the several hundred lots. I duly submitted bids for three items and followed their status daily. They remained the only bids all the way to the last time I checked just before closing deadline. Astonishingly, there were still no bids posted for a large majority of all other lots, and from what I could determine very little counter-bidding. Presumably, Cooper's had failed to publicize the auction adequately. Soon after closing time the auction website went "dead." concealing bids on all lots. It stayed as such until the auction page disappeared days later. Normally, of course, reputable online sites continue to post winning bids after closing so as to apprise participants. After waiting in vain for Cooper's to advise me of any successful bid(s), I contacted its office. The receptionist seemed flustered by my query, taking several more minutes until she found someone to take my call. That person indicated that winning notifications had already been sent out. Yet when I asked to receive or gain access to a listing of winning bids for all items, he refused, claiming one would be available on the website in weeks ahead. Not so. Weeks later I called again, this time demanding to speak to someone higher in authority. I was referred to one Mr. Cooper, as I recall a Vice-President, who peremptorily told me the "auction was closed," ending conversation. Evidently, Cooper's - - - facing meager turnout, low bids, and losses - - simply cancelled the auction, instead of honoring existing high bids. So much for integrity. read more
