No one, and I mean no one (in my circles) has ever referred to this park by its full name. We always just refer to it as Deussen Park. That said, Alexander Deussen was an important geologist who basically donated the land on which this park is situated. What sets this park apart from most parks in the metropolis is the expansive acreage, dark green verdant scenery, forest-like quality and its proximity to Lake Houston. Most parks in Houston have the concrete jungle as a backdrop or, in the case of Memorial Park, are located near highways or major thoroughfares. However, Deussen Park is one of those parks you can kind of disappear into and get lost in away from the chaos and everyday randomness of urban life. I've been here for BBQs and other gatherings, but would like to attend a concert here one day. If you just want to escape the big city, this is one of the best places to go. read more

Deussen Park is a great local neighborhood park located off of Lake Houston in Northeast Houston. At 309 acres, you could easily spend hours exploring this park. Our favorite part of this park is the view of Lake Houston! Great place for a walk, run, or if you want to ride your bike! They have a few pieces of workout equipment but nothing too crazy! They have restrooms and a ping pong table as well as a baseball field and loads of places to sit down and have a picnic! I've gone here for years and it's always been so peaceful. The park also has access to boat landing since it's right by Houston lake. It has a lot of Picnic area where you can cook . Since the pandemic a few area of the park is not accessible like the board walk which is bad . People go there for fishing too. It also has exercised equipment for public use. Now they have the renting bicycles at the park so you can rent them to ride around the park. read more

The sunrise over the lake is absolutely stunning!. The park has a nice trail for a nature stroll. However, I always get nervous on certain trails because they get too close to the trees for my comfort. I would rather NOT find out what lurking behind the trees. A lot of folks bring their boats to explore the lake's beauty away from shore. The bathroom are not clean I believe the county does a poor job maintaining them. Bring your own toilet paper and soap. There are lots of shaded areas, tables, plenty of families use the covered patios located throughout the park. Parking is free and plentiful you'll find the best views of the sunrise are in multiple locations so don't be upset if you're not there on time. Lastly, I feel pretty safe at this park which can't be said for all parks. Lake Houston and Deussen Park is vastly underrated. read more

I participated in a triathlon held at Deussen Park on Mother's Day. What a BEAUTIFUL venue!!! The lake (Houston) is beautiful, the park is super clean, roads are well maintained and much of the playground equipment was covered to both keep kiddies out of the sun and from getting burned by hot equipment! There are several different pavilions and bathrooms are placed throughout the park. Absolutely wonderful place and experience! The triathlon was awesome too!!! read more

Here's a little trivia for you: Alexander Deussen (1882-1959), a petroleum geologist, donated a 309-acre site on Lake Houston to Harris County in 1956. The site was converted into a public park and named the Alexander Deussen Park. Thank You Mr. Alexander Deussen!! Thanks to you I got to enjoy this park and a darn wonderful park it is! Now, you know I love the outdoors and being next to Lake Houston is my recipe for a wonderful day at the park. My friend's family was having an event there and rented the huge open air pavilion and the cook house. There was also a playground included with the rental of the Pavilion. The view of the lake is darn amazing from where we were, and the breeze coming from the water was nearly unbelievable! We got some blankets and laid next to the lake for a while, then we played bingo and danced the cupid shuffle! One thing I would love to do is rent a boat or jet ski and get into the water! Hopefully one day I will get to do that there. The park is HUGE and from the website I see they have: jogging trails, boat ramps/piers, hiking, bike trails, duck ponds, open air pavilions, picnic areas, playgrounds, wild life exhibits! Do you understand now why I think this park is awesome!!? The only down side to this park is that it is so far away from the city. I have been here several times as our alumni group usually holds an annual picnic here. It is located on beautiful Lake Houston. The accommodations are very nice, you get a large pavilion with a couple of grills and electric outlets that you can use and a nearby pair of bathrooms. There is also a kids playground with a short walking distance as well as expansive grassy area for kids to play. If you don't live nearby, make sure you gas up as it will be a long drive if you are coming from Katy or areas south of there. It can be a little difficult to find different shelters but look them up as they provide maps on their website. If you are going to serve alcohol you will need to pay for a policeman. Our event went off without a hitch and we had beautiful weather. read more

Great spot to relax with a book and unwind. Really quite location. Park is very well maintained. Coming to this location makes me feel good about paying taxes for sure! There are many animals running around. Even Peacocks! Be sure to pack a lunch or bring snacks. There are no places selling food close by so be ready. Lots of bathrooms around. A few didn't have running water. So be careful before picking one. There is a boat launch in the park. So bring the boat and spend some time on Lake Houston. I did see some people fishing, nothing caught when I was watching. Pay this spot a visit. You will enjoy it. Only bad thing....do not being alcohol. I'm sure this park is even better if you have a boat, but all I had was my road bike. My cousin and I rode around the park to train for the MS-150 for the first time and we found that it's a good place to train for something quick. It has the right amount of hiker to biker ratio so there aren't too people to move around. Another plus was that there weren't that many cars around that day we rode so I felt relatively safe. The path you take does vary, but where we went had bike lanes and nice shaded tree's surrounding us. You just have to look for these paths and stay along the biking lanes. There were a few other bikers riding too so it's not entirely secluded. If you stray too far off the path, you may end up on narrow two way roads which may be dangerous. I'll have to come back here again to learn a good route. It's a park I would consider riding to if you live close by. It's probably not worth it for a really experience rider looking for some major distance though. For a good 22 mile ride on safe roads, I would consider Bush Park on the West Side of Houston. read more

Holy Catfish Batman, that's a huge park! In fact, it's 309 acres. The land was donated by Alexander Deussen in 1956 and made a park. Lucky us! It borders Lake Houston and is comprised of open trails, tons of free access picnic tables, LOADS of pavilions of various sizes, a boat ramp, senior citizens center, and a dog park. Wow! Apparently you can ride horses in part of it too. There a buffalo in it to boot. Best of all, there are restrooms within walking distance of most of the pavilions, making it nice to have parties without interrupting things to drive a bunch over to a bathroom. The bathrooms were very clean on our last visit, even though the park was really busy. The dog park is nice. There is an area for small doggies like mine and room for the big boys. I wish the little dog section had more agility equipment than the two tunnels, but maybe there will be more. There are places for the pups to get some water and the ingress and egress from each area is nicely secured. There is even a place to hose down your messy pup before you put it in your vehicle. Fishing from the bank can be spotty as there are hordes of folks trying to get down there, but you can give it a shot. You might consider going over to Eisenhower to try fishing instead. read more

It's expansive, pristine and well-kept, has a watering station, covered seating areas, lots of trees, a washing station for post-play dirtiness, a new splash pond, AND an obstacle course! Midweek was fairly deserted, but it's safe - no concerns about break-ins. Day use park is also FANTASTIC. Several boat launches, lake access, pavilions (one is on a small peninsula over the water with vistas suitable for a wedding), plenty of restrooms supplemented by port-a-potties, tons of playscapes and picnic tables, tons of towering trees, green grass, and even a quiet area with a tiny fenced pond where you can feed ducks and geese. read more

This is MEGA-park with everything included!! It is a typical park with huge pavilions for a group gathering. See-Saw, swings, etc. Great for flying kites. You know its a great park when you hear kids screaming and running around. It also has creepy swamp trees with moss hanging from them. Like Bear Creek Park this park also have an animal shelter for wild animals like buffaloes and deer. Fishing, hiking, picnicking are all FREE, even the boat ramp to launch your boat! There are separate launch ramps for boat and jet skis. I was showing this gentleman how to use a castnet since he was making a fool out of himself with his kids. After I showed him a couple of big circular cast, I gave the castnet back to him. As I was leaving all I heard was, "Yeah dad, do it like him." lol. From my cast I caught: baby white bass, talapia, and a catfish. What makes this park unique is that it borders Lake Houston near the damn offering very good fishing. They even have flounders, I was told! Yes.....freshwater flounder that has been landlocked from the bay along with striped bass, crappie, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, panfish (bluegill, sunfish, etc.), channel cats. Just 15 minutes away you can drive to the lower part of the damn and fish in brackish water that also have REDFISH! If this park offers camping I would rate this park a 5 star! read more

I'm a fan. This was our first time ever taking our lil pooch to a dog park. If you pay attention to your dogs I don't see why there would be any problems! Very cool that they have separate big and small dog areas.If you live in the area, you can easily recognize familiar faces quickly. We even all ate a healthy lil' sub before we ventured over to the park. Oh mind you, if it's been raining there will be mud. There are pavilions available for use, be sure to call ahead if you plan on renting one! The park is large, so be prepared to walk around a bit to see everything. If you're preparing for a bike or run race, the park offers many shady routes available for training. The roads are not too busy with cars, which is a plus if you're unsure about being on a bike. The elevation is also mostly flat, so if you're a newbie to biking you won't have to worry about switching gears and wearing out going up hills. So I rented this park for my gender reveal... the park is amazing!!!!!!!! What wasn't amazing was the harassment by officers and park staff while we were there. There was 2 times officers came up to my sister questioning if she had rented the pavilion and two times she provided her information. Why she had to do it twice i don't know, did they not believe her the first time? Then at the end the guest were leaving and an officer came up to me telling us that our pavilion wasn't clean.....I said ok but we haven't even left yet, he went on to say he noticed people leaving... said yeah guests are leaving but the people who rented the pavilion are still here we aren't even done cleaning yet. The park is nice but i will not be renting again due to the ongoing harassment we experienced. read more

If you're coming here for an event like a family reunion or a kids' birthday party it's a great park. If you're looking for a leisurely day at the park and a walk with the dog it's BORING. The views of the lake are obscured by construction, the people watching is dull, and there isn't any wildlife of note besides the occasional squirrel. There are some bison behind a fence, but other than that, it's pretty dull. I expect some wacky ducks chasing kids to steal chunks of peanut butter sandwiches at a good park. (Ducks chasing kids... now that's entertainment.) They're currently building a dog park, so maybe I'll go again with the pup and regrade, but for now they only get 1 star. read more
