I went to see Dr. Matsumoto and his team in March of this year. It was an annual physical, but it…read morewas billed as both an annual physical and a regular office visit, so I had to pay a significant amount even though annual physicals are free with my insurance. Dr. Matsumoto was also running extremely late (I was in the room, freezing in that gown, for 30 mins) and we had a short appointment. I learned from my insurance company that as soon as you mention that *anything* is not 100% normal (e.g. "oh, my knees hurt sometimes") during an annual physical, doctors are allowed to report that the visit is now "more than a physical" and bill you for it (and they get paid more too!). I have never had a doctor do this to me, but Dr. Matsumoto did. Even the insurance company agreed that it was done in poor taste. Later, I found out that Dr. Matsumoto had ordered tests that we *explicitly* talked about not needing. I wanted to get a stool sample done for colon cancer as it runs in my family. The doctor and I talked about how I did *not* need to get tested for Giardia, Salmonella, or E. Coli due to my lifestyle (no camping, no unfiltered water, no meat, etc.). To my surprise, I was later billed for all these other tests. I tried to resolve this with the Palo Alto Medical Foundation and Dr. Matsumoto himself over several months, and they refused to help. They charged me $240 for the "free" annual physical and $370 for these tests I did not want. On top of that, the entire time I was trying to get this situation fixed, Palo Alto Medical Foundation would not stop harassing me. They sent paper bills and e-communication constantly. My insurance company said that during disputes, the providers are not supposed to harass their patients for payment, but they did. 0 stars for both Dr. Matsumoto and Palo Alto Medical Foundation. I will not be returning to either the provider or the network.

Frantically searching through tons of information about treatment options, my research led me to the conclusion that robotic prostatectomy was the right route for me and that the experience and skill of the surgeon was of utmost importance. I had just switched to Kaiser insurance and they were actually the ones to diagnose this problem through routine exam. The first urologist I saw who did the biopsy recommended that I take my time in choosing the right treatment for me and that I could meet as many different specialists as I wanted within the system until I found the one that I was most comfortable with. I saw two radiologists about external beam radiation and the radioactive seed implantation and then three different skilled robotic surgeons. Dr. Choi was one of those three. I was very impressed on our first visit with his low-key, approachable manner, his sense of humor and his willingness to answer all questions. He is fellowship trained in the procedure and at that time had performed around 150 or more of them. After I had met with all five specialists, I decided upon Dr. Choi. I had the surgery last week and Dr. Choi spent an extra hour and a half longer than he estimated in the surgery trying to spare both nerve bundles (significant for function and bladder control). He was apparently successful and today we got the good news that he removed all the cancerous tissue so now I don't have to do radiation or chemo! One week out, I'm feeling stronger every day and my pain is now minimal. Met with him today for my first post-op appointment and again, he made me feel relaxed, confident and I'm convinced that I made the right choice. I won't see him again for three months! If you have Kaiser and are considering robot assisted prostatectomy, I give Dr. Choi my highest recommendation. I'll post an update as I continue to recover.

I believe there is a critical lack of English proficiency on her end, as she misunderstands each answer I give.
