We committed to working together, I felt they were unresponsive once we started uploading docs etc., and they then suddenly told us they'll no longer work with us with no explanation and didn't respond to any follow-up questions. We're now left with very little time to find a replacement and we'll probably lose a lot of money as a result of this surprise from them. Facts: we agreed to work together at the start of this year. They shared a portal for us to upload docs into. It took us a few weeks to get started uploading those docs but we're still within their purported time-frame in mid-February. We had some access issues that, for myself, they fixed; that was not fixed for my wife and we had to bug them several times in the last week before our scheduled tax prep meeting. They then reached out to me, saying that they can no longer work with us and that they'll delete all the files I uploaded to their vault. When I asked them why, they did not respond. read more

This was our first year working with Akram and we have been very happy with his services so far. Our last tax accountant left a lot to be desired in terms of communication and timeliness - we finally decided it was time to make the switch. We had an initial consult with Akram late last year and liked the interaction and felt comfortable with his process and so came by again this year when it came time to do our taxes. He provided a very detailed checklist ahead of time of documents we would need to bring with us. You also have the option to upload some documents securely into Smart Vault or just bring hard copies. Since many of my documents are a mix of soft and hard copies, I liked that I had two options to send all the paperwork over. Akram is very knowledgeable in what he does and asks the right questions to make sure he is checking off all the boxes in how he can maximize your tax return. He also helped us double check that we were withholding enough - the last two years we were surprised with a hefty tax bill but this year we are expecting to get back a sizable return! I asked to do a consultation for estimated taxes for some rental properties we wanted to sell to see if it was a good idea to just sell them as is or try to do a 1031. I was given a much lower estimate than what I ended up paying even though the houses came in at a much lower prices. It ended up being around $60K more. He said during consulation for the actual payment after the sale that he actually needed the worksheets for the tax returns to be able to estimate the taxes properly and when he did, he saw the depreciation calculation was off. I saw him twice before and he never mentioned that. If he had just taken the time to do it right the first time, then we would have made a different decision. I'm not happy at all. read more

Sent them the tax info as expected 8 weeks later...and only then did they tell me they've decided to not help! Spoke to John who asked me to fill out a questionnaire to determine the quote for my tax preparation. I received a quote which was a range. I pressed John whether I should expect to pay the low estimate of that range unless something unexpected happens that did not come up in the questionnaire. He did not commit to that, and said it would all depend on complexity. That was supposed to be the point of the questionnaire (which was somewhat detailed) and I don't see any reason why they would ever charge you the low side of their quote given they provide no explanation of how they will ultimately determine complexity.
