Last night we had a bite emergency (one of my dogs was bitten under his eye) and I was frankly astounded by the speed and quality of care he received. The attending vet was superb, thorough, skilled, and fast. The work performed was absolutely top-notch of a quality I would have expected in a much larger clinic. Our wait time was as short as it possibly could have been. The aftercare instructions were clear, concise, and thankfully brief. The choices of medication provided to us for our trip back home were well thought out and chosen. In short, this is one of the best emergency clinics I have been to as a client or as a practitioner. In addition, the prices charged were extremely reasonable. One should realize that emergency care is expensive and the overall cost is determined on a case by case basis. I have been to three other emergency clinics in the area extending to a radius down to Portland. In my opinion not a single one of these has come close to the quality of care my dog received at Midcoast. As both a retired veterinarian and dog owner I cannot praise this clinic highly enough.

So I sat and held my dog yelping in pain and not breathing right  till an hour before the emergency  clinic opened to have him die in my arms. That morning in Bar Harbor when I took her out, everything was normal. She went outside and did her walk and came back in. She was inside about 10 minutes when she started yelping in pain. She couldn't walk. Her back leg seemed useless and looked splayed out. She wouldn't let us get near her. It was like she was having a fit. I could tell she was in a panic. After a few minutes she calmed down and seemed OK. She could walk again. But we wanted a vet to look at her as we'd never seen her act this way. We looked on Yelp and saw the great reviews others had given Ellsworth Family Veterinary Clinic so we called. They were exceptionally nice and said they could see her. So we packed up and drove there. Everyone we met (the receptionist, the tech, the vet), was professional and caring. Dr. Jones examined our Chihuahua and couldn't find any indication she been bitten or had stepped on a thorn of some sort. Her diagnosis was that our dog had had a episode of luxating patella, when is farily common in Chihuahuas. I'd never heard of this and the dog had never had this happen before. We'll be on the look out if it happens again. We feel fortunate that this happened in a place with a veterinary clinic as good as this one. I'm especially grateful they agreed to see us. I highly recommend Ellsworth Family Veterinary Ciinic.

They're nice, gentle, and don't BS you at all. They tell it like it is and work with you to make sure your animals get in safe. My biggest dog is not socialized so they allowed us to go in the back door into a room to prevent stress to any other animals that might be in the waiting room. Yes, of corse meds are expensive but they are everywhere. I don't blame them for that at all. They have their own lab in house for bloodwork or whatever you need. Supplies, treats, and other things are available to buy there. Fantastic staff and doctors and I will never go anywhere else as long as I'm here.

I actually have mixed feelings here…read more The care was good. The vets were kind and knowledgeable. As was the staff we interacted with as a whole. My issue was. I had the intention of using my care card. (A credit card for vet bills specifically). When I called to make the appointment I asked if they took that. I was told they did. And that's all that was said. When I went to check out it was "you can. But we have to bill you for a certain dollar amount to it. We can't use for less than this dollar amount. If we did we can credit your next service." Which I thought was wrong. I think they should have told me that on the phone when I asked about care credit in general. As I didn't have money I could actually spend at the time so that was my only payment option and it didn't have more than I actually needed on it so they could not over charge me to then credit me later. I had to borrow money from my ride. I was very upset with that.
