I was 16 playing competitive hockey when I started getting lower back / hip pain mostly in my top right hip. I didn't tell anybody cause I didn't think telling the coach would help anything and parents didn't seem to care when I said my back hurt. I kept it to myself trying to find stretches online and taking it easy for a long time telling myself it would get better in a month until idk 6 months had gone by and it had only gotten worse and I could hardly bend over to tie my skates. Putting my pants on each morning was miserable as I tried to lasso the each foot in the pant loop while trying to avoid the severe pain when bending over / squatting. Even just sitting in a chair at school there was constant pain and I tried to act natural and not make some noise or something as I tried standing up from my desk each class. The main blow came when I got cut from my hockey team in Columbus that year. I was about to be a senior in high school and it was embarrassing to be cut from my pride and joy in life, hockey, for all my classmates to know and removed from my best friends, the other players on the team. I made the Cleveland team (Barons) and moved to my aunt and uncles house in Chagrin Falls and went to high school there. I wanted to play d1 hockey and prove those who doubted me wrong. But my back still hurt and I got an MRI and doctor didn't really say much. Maybe a shmoral node or something and then it's like my teammates say "so did the doctor say u can play?" and I say yeah and people are like "Awesome!", meanwhile I'm just thinking how that solved nothing except people think I'm fine and my reality of extreme back/hip pain is nothing but me being a wuss. I had no remaining ideas and was doomed to deal with this misery forever when my aunt / uncle mentioned how years prior my uncle 1 week before going on scuba diving trip with his son couldn't get out of bed and went to see a chiropractor in Solon, Ohio named Dr. Reed and it was like a miracle and he did go to that scuba diving trip that week. What is all you hear about chiropractors that they are scam artists etc. I was desperate and gave it a try and in the first 5 mins of talking with Dr. Reed I didn't feel like some idiot trying to explain how my hip/back hurt in way that to others sounded like gibberish he actually understood me. This was 10 years ago so I don't remember exact verbiage but essentially said yes I know exactly your problem your hips are locked up from idk calcium build up and we need to break it free and loosen up those hips. Before we even started I was confident in Dr. Reed because he was the first person to understand me unlike the stupid hospital doctors that just give me a blank stare like I'm crazy and drug prescription and tell me they see nothing wrong. Anyway Dr. Reed put me on my side on the table and put his knee on my hip and basically put his full weight into it and it made the loudest idk pop sound and I remember even the receptionist lady across the way was like "ohhh yeahhh nicee!". Then did same thing on other side and got same loud pop. Followed that with electromagnetic stem and then a table that I laid face down on and the table bent and straightened on repeat for 10 mins, which I felt lower back bones kinda crack and decompress. That insanely loud hip popping only occurred on the first visit tho we did the same movement each time which I presume still helped loosen the area. My back pain did not disappear overnight but I went to Reed Chiropractic everyday for a few weeks then every few days then once a week until end of hockey season. I was able to get through the season with manageable, improving hip pain level. Some weeks would still flare up and maybe it took 2 years to be fully cured of any back/hip pain and no flare ups but I can unequivocally say the difference maker was Dr. Reed. In playing junior hockey the next two years I tried random other chiropractors in cities I was in for "maintenance" and to be fair I can see how chiropractors get a bad rap because they all seemed different like some do weird things like hitting your foot with a small mallet and I'm thinking well this ain't no Reed chiropractic so I consider myself extremely fortunate to have found myself in Solon. While I didn't go the NHL I did enjoy playing hockey for a good D3 NESCAC school and am healthy as ever today in 2024. I hope Dr. Reed and the crew are all doing awesome! I wonder if that corned beef place across the street is still around that I'd occasionally get after...anyway Idk why I randomly woke up at 4am and decided to write this, so I'm going back to sleep.
