However, when a community organization reaches out for support and cannot even receive a response or acknowledgment, that message begins to feel hollow. Over time, the station's community involvement has started to seem more transactional than genuine--as though support depends on who you know, what you can offer, or how much visibility is involved. That is deeply disappointing from a station that built its reputation on being the voice of the community. Sadly, I have changed the channel--except on Saturdays.

I'm a big fan of NPR and its local stations, KCRW and KPCC, which are both in constant rotation in my car. I visited NPR West last month to record an interview for All Things Considered, which aired on October 30. My new book had just come out, and it was an absolute dream to talk to Ailsa Chang about it and hear the interview air on my commute a week later. A life experience I will never forget. The offices were cool, though most of my time was spent alone in a recording booth. It seems like someone on this page was disappointed there was nothing in place to cater to NPR fans and tourists, but that didn't surprise me. This seemed more like a place for L.A. area employees and guests, to facilitate programming from a hub in a large West Coast city. I had guest parking with my name on it in the lot, and I geekily took a picture that I will treasure for all time. It was an honor and a pleasure to visit NPR West. I'm a regular listener and supporter, and I'd be at least 10% stupider if it weren't for public radio.

I have seen the rankings that say KFI is always near the top of So Cal radio stations. They have a…read morefew good programs that are sometimes interesting but they constantly beat you over the head with ads from the "smell good plumber", the garage door guy, the house flipper, the air conditioning expert, and etc., may be at an increased volume, so I usually do not listen for more than 1/2 hour at a time. All these advertisers should take a lesson from Larry and Irwin from Sit and Sleep who always seem to keep it fresh and interesting.
