Plaudits and gratitude are owed to L.A. Oldies 1260 K-Surf (KSUR) owner Saul Levine. He restored…read morerock'n'roll oldies to the Los Angeles market's AM dial (streaming at laoldies.com) in 2017 after removing it in 2011 for a classical music format. Levine, 93 years old, runs his independent station with scarce-if-any commercial interruptions, and his largesse is what makes K-Surf an oasis of the airwaves. In what is predominantly an automated format, the station has live DJs in control from 6-10 a.m. and noon-6 p.m. weekdays, and several features during the week that depart the routine. DJs are unobtrusive, announcing titles/artists and tossing in sometimes-surprising factoids. For instance, did you know that the twangy stringed instrument in B.J. Thomas' hit, "Hooked on a Feeling," is a sitar? To how many listeners might that have occurred some 50 years ago when the tune was in heavy rotation? K-Surf twice a week presents Dick Clark's archived syndicated program, "Rock Roll & Remember," and can be counted-on every Saturday night for six hours of disco memories, actually absence-heart-fonder fun. On the downside, the hour-long weekday news show, "This Morning: America's First News," breaks into the music at 4 a.m. and, what the heck, it never hurts to hear some news before you prep to slay those dragons. However, when the program ends, the oldies resume, and only one-and-a-half tunes play before a nearly identical news encore intrudes. Only other nit to pick is intermittent glitches in the signal (or computer?); only an instant of dead air, but annoyingly frequent when present. Monaural 50s-60s-70s music on AM radio possesses a certain throwback appeal. It sometimes sounds tinny, fuzzy or staticky, just as it did when the songs were new, listened-to on rudimentary, AM-only car radios and hand-held, Japanese-manufactured "transistors." That's the way it was until the rise of the FM band--and people LIKED it! The music transmitted rose above the obstacles then, and still does now.

This station is highly deceiving. It was once the most popular radio station playing OLDIES hits…read more Now it's another Mozart station or playing Beatles ALL the time. There's no variety and really sad to see the number one go negative so quickly. I guess someone got lazy during Halloween (prior to) because they were playing Xmas songs and we didnt even have Halloween nor Thanksgiving! BRING BACK THE OLDIES! we don't need 2 Mozart stations or playing one long Beatles cd! How lame OR get rid of the logo because it's no longer an oldies ststion. False advertisement... sad

It was a grueling open-ocean race dominated historically by only men. But in 1989, a young woman put together an all-female crew to challenge that. The Document invited hundreds of KCRW members to attend, so I RSVP'd. And I'm glad that I did. This film is inspirational. https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/writers-guild-theater-beverly-hills-2?select=mGn0PJVXuasfx_E_5a1E9g I am not a woman and I don't sail, yet even I was inspired by this story. These women sailed the sea for about six months against tremendous odds (including the Southern Ocean off the coast of Antartica). Amazing! That inspires me to challenge myself much more in my life as a result. https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/writers-guild-theater-beverly-hills-2?select=LMNKf0eXIqhQnlkXLtAKaw There were several food trucks and complimentary wine followed by a Q&A with the yacht captain Tracy Edwards and "Maiden" director Alex Holmes. Overall, a very nice event held at the Writer's Guild theatre. *** I don't subscribe to KCRW for its perks, but nice to partake. ;p ***

Then I heard some rapping. I checked my other radio and the same thing happened. I was so confused and didn't understand why I was hearing synthesized vocals and electronic drum beats from a country station. It was at that moment I thought I had entered the twilight zone. In a world where country music is not country music but pop music. An alternate dimension. The pedal steel does not exist. There's no Jamey Johnson, Sturgill Simpson, Whitey Morgan and the 78's, Brent Cobb, Tyler Childers, Colter Wall, Chris Stapleton, Cody Jinks, Mike and the Moonpies etc..etc.. Or maybe this country station is in cahoots with large record labels (e.g. Big Machine) who are only interested in promoting pop music under the guise of country music to capture a broader market and target specifically to teeny boppers because they are huge revenue stream (Think N'Sync, Back Street Boys, 98^degrees). Somewhere in the heavens, Waylon Jennings is shedding a tear every time Florida Georgia Line plays on the radio.

I'm a channel flipper. I hear a commercial or a radio ID break and I scan to a new station…read more I don't have to skip stations with K-Mozart 105.1, though. For the past month I have been listening to this free public FM radio station. I have yet to hear a commercial. My only problem is the same problem I have with all radio stations, TV channels, podcasts, and so on... when the music stops, I can barely hear the DJ at times. I turn up volume to hear their interpretation of the symphony and the history of the music... then BLARING MUSIC CONTINUES. I thought the FCC was supposed to fix this ages ago. I've been infatuated with classical music since I began playing the flute in middle school. For whatever reason, it seems to ground me particularly while I'm driving all over Los Angeles County. Perhaps because I can use my imagination? Perhaps because there are no lyrics? No politics associated with it like there is with other genres? My 7 and 8-year-old say they can't wait to go to the symphony with me. I guess this means they enjoy this music too even when they have their headphones connected to their iPads. Thanks, K-Mozart. I see according to your FCC application you'll be around for a while longer. The license expiration date is 12/01/2029. Until then, I'll tune in as much as I can. TIP Also available on AM 1260. You can also play directly from their website at https://kmozart.com or download their app from the App Store or "Get it on Google Play."
