By stopping the political idea to position a and build a copy of the Vietnam War Memorial inside the cemetery grounds showed the VFW and idea maker Mr. Mike Lake that he can't have his way. Thank you. Gene T. Spanos Illinois Marine Vietnam Combat Veteran

My husband and I go twice a year and clear, cut and when needed, brought sand and levelled the markers that sunk. Shouldn't have to, but do.

I love this cemetery, but I have been going there twice a year since my mom passed in '94 to clean up the markers and level them if necessary. It is a labor of love. It is what it is. They have rules folks and you shouldn't be surprised when they enforce them. I like the clean look of level markers and marvel at the almost carnival like "memorials" heaped upon someone's final resting place in some sections. I have an older brother and both parents in the same row. It is a sacred place and they try very hard to keep it that way, which is why I hope to join them when my time comes. My in-laws are down the street at Ridgeview and their upkeep is much worse. It is solid weeds and crabgrass that seems to never get cut. None of the ground is level either; like walking in a mine-field. (A note about winter funerals: I suspect they would like the final good-byes to be in one of their lovely chapels as we did when my dad died New Years Eve morning 1962. I was ten. It seems more prudent when your loved one's plot is "off road" so to speak.) BTW the field masses on Memorial Day are quite lovely. Also, I have meandered the main mausoleum in summer and found the climate control perfect. We even checked out the "old" side across the street which is quite remarkable as well. Office staff has always been very professional when I have had questions in person. I am sorry so many folks had bad experiences. I am sorry for your losses.

I feel it is poorly kept up. A lot of tacky decorations. The ground is very unstable. Graves are hard to find. Markers are covered up,

There was also a covered entry which facilitated drop off and pick up without worry for inclement weather. And appreciated the very large parking lot to accommodate the many driving guests that came to the funeral we attended this past weekend. The facility was open and airy with very high ceilings which gave a feeling of spaciousness which was very important for some of us who do not want to feel crowded in during a time of grieving even if it is communal. The staff were very attentive and quietly present, overseeing and making sure guests knew where everything was. There was an excellent screen to facilitate photos being cycled of the deceased which helped guests feel connected through memories. There was a kitchen/table area where food could be handled and set up with coffee and tea available in addition to a water cooler. There was a side room with a couch for those who needed some quiet, family and elderly utilized that space. A cloak room made it easier to take off winter coats which made guests feel more welcome and comfortable. When we accidentally left our traveling bags behind in the cloak room we were able to reach the funeral director Julie Shim who stayed later to make sure we could pick up our suitcases for our travels early the next morning. Outstanding professionalism and customer care.

She went above and beyond for our family. She listened, gave options, was honest, understanding, compassionate, and thoughtful. I was impressed by the personal treatment that she gave to my daughter. Stacy valued my daughters input and made her feel appreciated in the whole planning process. Stacy made herself available any time during for any questions, concerns, requests, that we had. When we walked into the funeral home, it gave you a very home like feeling, not depressing more inviting, and it smelled fresh. They have the room for the viewing, a back room for refreshments. I made a video to play of pictures that was easily hooked up to the TV from my Mac and Spotify playlist to be played during the visitation. The whole establishment was spotless from the parking lot to the bathrooms. As I look back, Riverwoods was absolutely 100% the right choice and would not go anyplace else. I would recommend Riverwoods to anyone that might need these services. I was very pleased with the operations of this establishment. They went above and beyond for my family. They are genuinely good and caring people, they take the time to help during extremely difficult times. Stacy was an angel of compassion at a time when I physically and mentally exhausted and was in desperate need of a helping hand. I'm extremely grateful for everything they have done and can't thank them enough for being there for my family.

The grounds are beautiful and well maintained. Before his passing, we had an initial visit with Michael regarding plot selection and he was helpful with helping us pick the location that best met our needs. No pressure, just a friendly visit and discussion. After he passed, we then worked with Sherry and Arlene to purchase the plot, casket, vault, shroud, death certificates, etc. The cost was substantial, but I imagine it is likely in line with other Jewish cemeteries in the area. Included in the cost is perpetual care of the grounds so there are no additional fees down the road. The chapel for his service was very nice and all of the people working there that day were super friendly. They live streamed his service which many in my family used. They also provided the ability to download the service which I decided to do. Shalom Memorial received the death certificates a few days afterwards from the village and we picked them right away so we could begin sending them to those who needed them. I really can't think of anything that I didn't like or was disappointed in.

While this process is always difficult, it couldn't have been easier or more smooth. Tony was wonderful: caring, thoughtful, resourceful, patient, and quick. He moved us through the decision-making process easily, recommended a rabbi and a Shiva location, and made things happen. The services were beautiful and meaningful, and our pain was eased because there was no additional stress. Many thanks from the Sandler family.
