After some tests and bloodwork I walked over to explore a bit and take in the scenery. It was open mid - afternoon. I enjoyed some peace and quiet as I sat in a pew and reflected on things. I'm not an overly religious person but this helped me sort things out a bit.

The worship is very good. Similar to Bethel Worship style. I've visited many churches in NYC, and I'm southern so I'm kinda picky and won't settle of anything. This church is one if kind. The Manhattan campus is quaint enough that you won't get lost and people recognize you. I recommend Friday service first. Sundays service are good but I've only gone once and that was on easter and i wasn't disappointed. Be sure to visit the healing room.

The alter has been brought down to the center of the beautiful historic building. The parishioners sit in a semi circle around the alter. The priests and chorus are behind. I was on the side today but felt included. The mass is modern and prayers for everything and everyone. If you want something/someone included during mass you just fill out a paper and let them know. The mass is simple. The responses are sung. I enjoy the chorus. My friend is in the chorus. In fact my family has attended this church in the past. I've got a lot of musicians in my family that made their living playing orchestra in the shows. But that's another story! The church design and decor are so beautiful. There are a lot of angels painted on the the walls. They do not mind picture taking. I'll go back for service and take pictures of the Angels I'm sure!! I see people of every age, elderly, middle age, people in work uniforms, small children, college age, teens and expectant mothers. You name it everyone is covered. They have plenty of room for strollers to be wheeled in the back. Parents walk and rock to quiet babies during service. I find their dedication to attend mass inspiring. Dress is not important. I saw one girl in zebra print work out pants. What I'm trying to say is, this is not an elitist church like some I attend. It's not a wealthy Parrish I'm sure. With exception to the European pastor, I have always been impressed with the pastors here as they have been entertaining, witty, and very lively during their sermons. The place may look small from the outside but easily fits a solid crowd of perhaps 200-300. Their choir is decent, but don't appear all that frequently. Whats certain for sure is they definitely have money as their song pamplets are printed out the DAY of, in color, with legible fonts, and a decent layout. I hope they recycle because that stuff is by no means cheap. Beats using a cheap ol psalms book I suppose.

I came on the first Sunday of lent and the first 15 minutes were of them walking around with the incense. The incense is very strong and they do two rounds, so if you have allergies or shortness of breath, like me, please sit towards the back where it's more aerated. I don't know if they do that every single time or if it was just for that particular Sunday. A very interesting moment to be a part of, and I enjoyed watching that part.

The ministry of Smoky Mary's encourages me to follow the daily office. On weekdays, I can duck into morning prayer before work, or mass at lunch, or evening prayer after work, or mass on Wednesday evening. No one goes to all of them, not even close. But having so many services on offer is wonderful for worshipping, for feeling close to God and for making friends. Come once week, ten times a week, once a month. Whatever works for you. Everyone here is giving it their authentic all -- the priests, the music director, the lay people serving at the altar or keeping the daily office. You get something out of it for heart and mind. If you are looking for a place to go to church that will include you, you might consider Smoky Mary's. It is special. It really is.

I called the church office to report and the person who took my call was less than helpful. This is the middle of the day they have people throwing water sloppily. When I told the person he can't throw water down the stairs into the air at the sidewalk with people walking by, he seemed to mock me.
