During my recent visit to the Tiki Bar in Fort Myers, I encountered an issue that I feel compelled to share, to potentially spare others from a similar unpleasant experience. As part of their routine, Suncoast Security personnel was present to check IDs at the entrance. As I have done countless times, I handed over my driver's license to the heavy-set Latino guard on duty. To my surprise, instead of a smooth check-in process, I found myself being challenged over my height as indicated on the ID. Despite my polite explanation, the guard responded with an unwarranted confrontational demeanor. In an attempt to prove my identity and defuse the situation, I offered additional identification forms, such as credit cards and even my social media account. Instead of professionally resolving the issue, the guard opted for a sarcastic and provocative approach that was far from the professional conduct one would expect in such a role. Unfortunately, this trend of escalating the situation rather than diffusing it continued when my friend began to record the encounter. The guard redirected his confrontational attitude towards my friend, threatening him with ejection for simply documenting an increasingly unsettling situation. After this unnecessarily lengthy ordeal, the guard finally conceded that my ID was, indeed, legitimate and begrudgingly let us through, but not before delivering a final, snide remark. Inside, we noticed him signaling and pointing us out to another security guard, leaving us feeling targeted, uncomfortable, and ultimately prompting us to leave. This experience was nothing short of disrespectful and disturbing. A security guard, whose primary role should be to ensure the safety and comfort of patrons, instead instigated an unnecessary confrontation, creating a hostile atmosphere that detracted from the otherwise enjoyable environment of the Tiki Bar. The professional conduct of a security guard should not be a gamble. We all have off days, but it's crucial to keep personal frustrations separate from professional responsibilities, especially in roles interacting with the public. I truly hope that Suncoast Security addresses this issue and reassesses their training procedures to avoid potential future incidents like this one. In closing, this unfortunate incident has put a damper on my fondness for the Tiki Bar, an establishment I once frequented and enjoyed. I hope they reconsider their security provider to ensure a welcoming and enjoyable atmosphere for all patrons.
