It was initially for something to occupy my time one night a week to do something locally. For those who follow my Yelp reviews, you can tell that I spend a chunk of my time out of town (by choice), but I wanted an outlet within my home area to have fun, meet new people, etc. Kickball, with its 8 week regular season plus playoffs, seemed to be a good fit for me, and some friends of mine that live in North Carolina play in an adult kickball league down there and subliminally encouraged me to get into the sport. Some people sign up for the kickball league individually as a free agent to be placed on a team or as part of a small group and get placed on a team that needs the players. Other people will sign up as part of a full team. In any respect, if you want to play kickball, there will be a place for you. Some people who play kickball are natural athletes, but others (such as myself) are able to play even with not much natural athletic ability and still enjoy themselves. By design, adult kickball is a social sport, and after the games (which usually take about an hour from start to finish), teams are able to go to the specially designated kickball bar to socialize with players from their team as well as players from other teams. Kickball players have been known to play a relaxing game of flip cup while at the bar as well. The long or short of the matter is, if you're looking for a fun way to occupy some of your time, besides reading some awesome Yelp reviews, I think that WAKA Kickball is where its at.

I enjoyed watching a Tri-City Valleycats home game at Joe Bruno Stadium in Troy recently. They…read moreplayed the Quebec Capitales and did not win. In fact, they never even scored. Still, the stadium is a great facility. The summer evening was lovely and relaxing. The brick oven pizza was delicious.The vendors and fans were nice with the exception of the obnoxious Quebec fan who whipped out a small tin bugle and blew it every time his team scored. The Capital Region is fortunate to have a Frontier League team in the Valleycats. Contrary to popular belief, it's not a minor league farm team. It's described as one of 18 teams in an independent Major League Baseball partner league which helps players advance to the majors. Lately, the Valleycats have been struggling, which is too bad. The team has a lot of heart. The players come out to greet fans before their games. They hold a lot of special events that help the community. There was Irish Night, a celebration of cultural heritage. There are food drives to help feed the hungry and their annual Bark in the Park to benefit shelter pets. Fans were encouraged to bring their dogs to the stadium which is something I've never seen before. Here's to hoping the Valleycats can get out of their slump.

What the hell do I know about soccer? And yet, for one season, I was a coach for a team of eleven…read moreyear-olds, essentially defined as mashed potatoes with legs and destructive tendencies. However, it was very enjoyable. The team mostly consisted of kids whose parents wouldn't even stop the car, just letting the kids roll out as they drove away. One kid wore a porkpie hat and kept a toothpick in his mouth during practices. Another could scream at such a high pitch that dolphins went deaf. Some were HULK SMASH everything in sight. Others were face-magnets for soccer balls. And a couple were actually rather earnest about playing. Halfway through the season, though, they gelled as a group, and commenced winning against their rival team. Even I benefited, once completing three jumping jacks while leading a warmup. Parents began showing up to cheer on their kids, and even participated in a kid vs. parent game one memorable and almost tender practice night. One the last day of the season, my team raided the coolers and tote bags of their rival team's parents, walking away with sodas in their cargo pants and candy and treats scooped up in their shirts. When confronted, one kid said, "You don't understand. This stuff to us is like beer to you." "Gin," I had to remind him. AYS is really a fantastic venue for kids in the Albany area, and my team was definitely an anomaly. Parents should check out the website and support this excellent city-sponsored resource. It is huge and…read moreduring the winter yes it'll be a little cold inside but nothing that your jacket and gloves won't fix because I expect that you were going to be wearing that stuff anyway during the colder months. They have a food option once you get inside and they even have a little bit of entertainment, arcade games. But the fields are in good condition the seating area is great so I think that this would be a great place if you want to host a tournament or if you are trying to check in advance because your tournament will be played there.

Maybe this is why they are very strict that you must wear turf, shoes or sneakers, no cleats. The walls are pretty murky and looks like the place has not been cleaned in years. Make sure you bring a blanket or coat. They do have bleachers to sit, which is nice as many domes I've been and do not have that option and you have to bring your own chair or just stand. They also have a nice concession stand area that serves pretty decent food and beer if you are craving an alcoholic beverage.

Whomever is using it, male or female, standard protocol is to lock the doors when in use at a public facility. Let me take you on a story which includes a gym member named "Creeper" by other gym goers and a management who has failed to protect their female customer base. This story will leave you disappointed whether you have a daughter, sister, wife, or mother. Often times woman battle to be heard or taken seriously when they voice up. They are not believed, or their complaints are viewed as "just complaining", or "they take things too personally." I am voicing up about this to protect the next woman-these predators start out as exposing themselves, and then evolve into physically touching. I attend an evening gym session at Crossfit Shatter. Before the actual group workout, I decide to use the restroom. Upon arriving, the women's restroom door was unlocked and I entered. I observed a young male squatting on top of the toilet with no pants on, exposing his genitals and conveniently facing the door-as if waiting for someone to enter. It was clear he was an "exhibitionist", and waiting for his next female victim. The members were on to something. This was the person they labeled "Creeper". After leaving the facility and calling the location's manager, it was clear he did not deem this situation as alarming. He questioned whether it was even a crime and relayed he cared about the gym's reputation. Most concerning is being told this individual was kicked out from his previous gym. When I realized nothing was going to be done to address this issue, and protect other female members, I asked for my membership to be revoked. It was granted without penalty. I asked other female gym members if they experienced anything with "Creeper". Two of them stated yes. During those incidents he was in the bathroom with the light off, door slightly ajar and he had no shirt on. As if he was testing the waters. Placing a label "Women", "Men" above the bathroom doors does not solve the problem. The bigger issue here is not respecting women and not stopping the victimization.

Crossfit Shatter has been the catalyst for one of the most amazing life changes I've ever committed to - making myself and my health a priority in a way that honors health, fitness, and community above just a number on the scale. I started attending Crossfit Shatter last fall, but I made a commitment to regular attendance in January (I can confirm, you get out of crossfit what you put into it). I am so much stronger, healthier, and happier than I was just one year ago. I look forward to going to the gym every time I go and that can be attributed to the great people who teach and attend classes at Shatter. Shane and Lucille have built a gym and a community that is unlike any other. I love going to class. I always sweat, am challenged to improve and constantly amaze myself. I'm doing things I never thought possible. Shatter is now not just "the gym" - it is the place I go to work out aggression after a tough day at the office, it is a place I go to see friends, and it is a place I feel powerful and optimistic about my health and my future. People reading this may think I don't have anything to compare Shatter to, which would be incorrect. I've visited 3 other gyms and, yes, overall crossfit consistently delivers on community, training and support. However, Shatter takes that community and combines it with outstanding technical training, forward thinking programming taking into account athlete weaknesses and strengths, and supportive tight-knit community combined with humor, making Shatter truly something special. Crossfit is difficult no matter what gym you belong to. Stick with it. The way you will grow, learn and develop (at any age or skill level) to become an athelete will amaze you. Shatter will do all that expertly, while also making working out fun!
