It's a very large 19th century cemetery with tombstones and burial sites of many prominent people from Pittsburgh. It's maintained well and a great place to walk or bike. My grandparents lived off Stanton Ave - 1 block from Butler St. My grandfather would take his spirited grandchildren over to the cemetery to feed the squirrels peanuts. At the cemetery, we learned to appreciate Pittsburgh history. Through the tombstones, you see wars, influenza wiping out families, generations of families, the poor, the rich, veterans, and lots of animals and birds in the middle of the city. I highly suggest taking a walking tour (advertised on their Facebook page in the Spring & Fall). Who would have thought of hiding bootleg alcohol in a tombstone?? During Prohibition they did. Only certain types of stone could survive during the heavy air pollution from the steel mills. The walking tour is up and down, over and across, rain or sunshine ... so wear good walking shoes. If you follow the pink line to the top of the hill, my grandparents are buried there. My mausoleum slot is ready for my parents and myself. If you are a history buff or just looking for some quiet amongst the chaos, I recommend Allegheny Cemetery. read more

People always look at me funny when I say I'm taking a walk or run through the cemetery. If you live in Lawrenceville, you know that the Allegheny Cemetery is like a huge park. It takes up SO much land and connects Butler Street all the way up to Penn Avenue by Children's Hospital. It is very quiet and peaceful, and they usually have on a fountain in the summer. There are people having picnics on blankets, walking, running, biking, and pushing strollers. It is very hilly so it's ambitious if you're running. There are huge statues and graves like I have never seen anywhere else. There are historic people buried here, and their tombstone statues are incredible. It is very easy to get lost! Go for a walk here and see what you find! read more

This is a place that I absolutely love to walk through and sit and rest at various water features. Love Exploring the stones and mausoleums. Truly a beautiful park with active wildlife dedicated to the dead as well as the living. Spend a lot of time hiking, biking, walking and exploring; finding something new in each visit. This is a great place to collect your thoughts and grab some fresh air. There are many historical aspects of the cemetery and it's almost like walking through an outdoor museum. The entire area is gorgeous and many aesthetically pleasing and unique headstones, and mausoleums, if you are into that kind of thing. I like to take my hearse for little rides through there. It was a peaceful place to explore and there were over 20 skinny deer wandering about .. lots of birds and small animals .. black squirrel.. etc. Old cemeteries are mixture of history and park in addition to being the last resting place for many. Allegheny Cemetery is my favorite of the large cemeteries in Pittsburgh due to its sheer size and scope. Pretty much every type of monument you can think of has been constructed here, and some of them date back to the 1800's. If you know anything about Pittsburgh history, you'll recognize the names of many of the people who the monuments memorialize. If you have an eye for architecture, you'll appreciate the varied styles of the monuments, which reflect the eras in which they were constructed. If you like nature, you'll enjoy feeling like you're not even in the city when you're walking here, and perhaps seeing some deer grazing among the gravestones. Thus, I suppose you could say there's something here for everyone! My favorite part of the cemetery, however, is the mausoleum. While I realize that it may sound strange, it's actually really beautiful due to its many stained glass windows, which depict scenes from the Bible and other books (e.g., Pilgrim's Progress). In particular, be sure to go downstairs and check out the crypt, which is home to many of the windows, and is tastefully decorated. The building is quite large, also containing a chapel for memorial services, some offices, and clean bathrooms, in addition to the interred "residents." After attending a cookout on Memorial Day with CM, I suggested that we take a stroll at Allegheny Cemetery, since it seemed a fitting way to remember the sacrifices that some veterans have made for our country. Also, it gave us an opportunity to enjoy the peacefulness of the cemetery and get some exercise after having spent several hours socializing and eating. We both enjoyed exploring the cemetery very much, though we didn't come upon the veterans' plot, which I was hoping to see decked out with flags. My only criticism is that some of the roads aren't kept up as well as they could be, and that there are Canadian geese, which always leave a mess behind. This cemetery is one of Pittsburgh's historical treasures, so be sure to check it out! If I were dead, I'm pretty sure this is where I'd like to take up eternal residence. ;-) read more

It seems kind of weird to review a cemetery but this place is the Pere Lachaise Cemetery of Pittsburgh. Honestly, it's just as beautiful as the famous cemetery in Paris. I go for walks here with my son in the stroller. Maybe that's morbid, but I really find it to be so beautiful and historical. I'm looking forward to some of the events that are held there, like the Doo Dah Days, I think. read more

This is a wonderful cemetery, great for walking and wonderful to explore some of the famous people buried there. My favorites include Stephen Foster, Charles Avery (Abolitionist and founder of Avery College), Lester Madden (Jaws headstone), Josh Gibson, Lillian Russell, Harry Kendall Thaw, and Stanley Turrentine. Venture Outdoors gives an amazing tour of the Cemetery, and the tour is very reasonably priced. There are are lots of birds, deer, and beautiful trees throughout. read more

While Urban hiking in Pittsburgh with my hubby, daughter Noel and her boyfriend Adam, we opted to locate the Allegheny Cemetery. We always, when in a major city of any great size or with historical connections, we try to schedule a visit to a cemetery. The cemetery is like a park to me and my daughter, with beautiful statues and flowers, gorgeous trees and sometimes a pond or wildlife. This particular cemetery had amazing wildlife opportunity. We actually stumbled across a family of 15 deer, and they were just relaxing amongst the tombstones. It was a very beautiful site and they didn't seem to act like they were spooked by our visit at all. The cemetery itself was gorgeous with marble vaults, buildings, tombstones and statuary. There was a lot of statues located throughout the lovely setting of this cemetery. There was even a small pond near the center of the right side of the cemetery. Without stopping at the office and getting a map, it was still fairly easy to navigate along the narrow paths and lanes. The grounds were surrounded by wrought iron and thick slabs of stone. It was laid out in the mid 1800's. If you are in the area and you are interested in peaceful beauty and a park like atmosphere. Then stop here for a FREE look into the past and a lovely park. Enjoy the time here, walk among the tombstones and celebrate the past during your life. I highly recommend you going to this lovely cemetery, and I will do it again myself. read more

It's a cemetery, what can I say. You have to be that type of person that likes that sort of thing I guess, but to be honest I saw many regular folks just using it for a afternoon job. It is a very large cemetery and would take a few hours at least to really take in. I didn't get through half of it. It is a very pretty places, with lots of trees. We even saw 10-15 deer throughout. I think it would be a great place any time of day just to walk around. Quiet and peaceful...with ..oh yeah.. a lot of dead people. You really get to see the economic lines between people here to. Some of these mausoleums, tombs, stones are huge. The money that was dished out in mind blowing. I enjoyed myself, and like I said. this place takes awhile to get through, each experience would be unique. Highly recommend read more

The Allegheny Cemetery is the most stunning cemetery I've ever gone to! Appearing as a castle upon entry, you slowly drive through the antique gates and down the path towards the cemetery. You immediately see the wonderful landscaping that sets the tone for the rest of the cemetery that you are about to see! There are even picnic benches along the entry way for you to enjoy quick bite or a conversation while taking in the scenery surrounding you. The headstones are beautiful, intricate and unique, including the famous stone that has the JAWS cover carved into it! You will see your occasional jogger or biker, enjoying the sights of the cemetery and as you drive through, you can see the abundance of history hidden in the carved stones. The area is just purely breath taking- from the wild deer families to the trees, ponds and hills. read more

The people that work here are the most amazing , and kind people, that I feel that I have met in a long time. They had true compassion for you and were just such kind and genuine people.
