This is wicked cool cemetery, had to get a close look!

This was a discovery from my most recent visit with my kids in Pittsburgh, just happened upon it on a breakfast adventure with #1 son. Homestead Cemetery, a historical landmark in Munhall, PA is a history-rich burial ground that has served the local community since its establishment in 1886. This cemetery holds a significant place in the hearts of the people of the Monongahela Valley, and example the region's growth and transformation over the years. My interests in graveyards and cemetery goes back to my photography days, then later as a long time contributor to Find-A-Grave. I was excited when I rounded a corner and caught my first glimpse of this unique find. The cemetery covers an expansive area in a serene, picturesque setting with rolling hills and well-maintained grounds. It is the final resting place for over 30,000 individuals, each with their own unique stories and connections to the area's rich history. Some notable features and historical aspects of Homestead Cemetery include: * Graves of Civil War veterans: The cemetery is home to the graves of numerous Civil War veterans, making it a poignant site for reflecting on the sacrifices made by these brave individuals. * Immigrant history: Many immigrants who settled in the region during the late 19th and early 20th centuries are buried at Homestead Cemetery, showcasing the diverse cultural heritage of the area. * Historical records: The cemetery's records, which have been carefully preserved over the years, provide valuable insights into the genealogies and family histories of those interred within its grounds. While there's veterans from the Civil War, Spanish American War, and both WWI and WWII I was particularly intrigued by the Civil War veterans, that include African American veterans who served in the United States Colored Troops and segregated state units such as the 54th and 55th Massachusetts, the 29th Connecticut, and the 14th Rhode Island regiments. It's noteworthy that it includes only African American enlisted men and non-commissioned officers, and does not include white officers who may have commanded or served with those regiments. In recent years, there have been concerns about the cemetery's future due to a lack of caretakers and a functioning board of directors. However, the local community and historical societies have expressed interest in preserving and maintaining this important landmark for future generations. Bottom line: Homestead Cemetery stands as a testament to the rich history and diverse community of Munhall and the surrounding area. Its historical significance, and well-documented records make it a valuable resource for historians, genealogists, and anyone interested in learning more about the region's past. You can find more information about the cemetery, including its history, maps, and contact information, on their website. Their Facebook page also shares updates and events related to the cemetery. This is a very charming Victorian era cemetery with rolling hills and beautiful groves of trees everywhere you look. It offers an extremely tranquil setting where you can bring you dog for a moderate workout or ride your bike - both of which we saw going on while visiting. There are still tons of plots open for burials, so if you lose your loved one, and want somewhere to bury them in peace, Homewood Cemetery might be a solid option for you.

They were caring, helpful and treated my family with respect and gave us welcome advise when we needed it. From start to finish, they patiently walked us through the process and helped us make the best choice for our family even arranging for a special viewing for the grandchildren to say goodbye to their beloved Papa . My mom did not want to split up my five siblings and wanted us all with her so they arranged for a stretch limo. The cemetery had issues with the actual grave site and they help navigate so that my mother and siblings were satisfied, we had a grave side service and they arranged for chairs for all of the older attendees and a tent. They even assisted with live streaming so that out of town guests could join us. My oldest brother had many many demands and required some extra attention and somehow Rose on the Schugar team was his personal aid and made him feel heard and got him what he needed quickly. We had one day to pull together a service, arrangements and shivas and they helped to get it all done. Thank you for helping us while we were at wits end during one of the worst times in our lives. I highly recommend.

Ralph…read moreSchugar Funeral Chapel is one of the few ultra Orthodox Jewish funeral home in Pittsburgh. Clearly by far it is the best. They offer funeral packages, graveside packages, or you can make up your own. The chapel is an adequate size for the ceremony. Judaism dictates no open viewing but rather 1 hour visitation before the service. Casket remains closed. Off to the side of the chapel is the mourner's room where family and friends may pay their respects to the deceased' next of kin during that visitation period. They provide you with information on how to find the various cemeteries and give you a small book of prayers, and a listing of the yearly Yahrzeits (Hebrew anniversary of date of passing) for the deceased. Their phone answers 24 hours round the clock so there is always someone available. They provide excellent service and compassion and understanding to the one in need. Another service they offer is a prearrangement which I lean towards. Often times in a period of loss a person is under much duress and as a result has a tendency to overspend. You can arrange an apt with a member of their staff and declare your intentions for your next of kin or for yourself. Around the time of the Jewish High Holidays in the fall they give out complimentary Jewish calendars. I have utilized their services in the past and have been here on a number of occasions. Out of respect for the chapel no photographs please.

When we came in for our scheduled meeting to discuss the arrangements, he was late to our meeting. When he did come in to the room, he never said he was sorry for our loss. He then had a folder of information for our loved one, however, he had other people's information in her folder. Also, his cell phone kept going off during the meeting and he didn't 1) turn it to silent and 2) ignore the calls. He actually answered the calls in the middle of our meeting, which I thought was very unprofessional. He was very unprofessional and also could stand to have some sensitivity training. In addition to all of that, there were some financial disputes between the family and the funeral home. We needed to purchase a vault for our loved one and the director said we could purchase one from the cemetery for $1900, or purchase one from him for $1200. That turned out to be entirely false. Thee cemetery only charges the base price of vaults, which is about $700. I believe the director, Napoleon, takes advantage of people in their vulnerable state in order to get more money for himself. The only reason I gave Spriggs-Watson two stars was because the gentleman who conducted the actual funeral service arrangements on the day of the funeral. He was very professional and courteous and made sure we were okay the whole entire time. I wish I knew his name!
