Pittsburgh is home to so many beautiful cemeteries that are more like sprawling gardens of lush green, wildlife, water features, foliage, and of course headstones of remembrance of those who've left the world. It's an oasis in the middle of a city neighborhood. Like many of the local graveyards, celebrities, local figures and politicians are buried here. This was a discovery from my most recent visit with my kids in Pittsburgh, just happened upon it on a breakfast adventure with #1 son. Homestead Cemetery, a historical landmark in Munhall, PA is a history-rich burial ground that has served the local community since its establishment in 1886. This cemetery holds a significant place in the hearts of the people of the Monongahela Valley, and example the region's growth and transformation over the years. My interests in graveyards and cemetery goes back to my photography days, then later as a long time contributor to Find-A-Grave. I was excited when I rounded a corner and caught my first glimpse of this unique find. The cemetery covers an expansive area in a serene, picturesque setting with rolling hills and well-maintained grounds. It is the final resting place for over 30,000 individuals, each with their own unique stories and connections to the area's rich history. Some notable features and historical aspects of Homestead Cemetery include: * Graves of Civil War veterans: The cemetery is home to the graves of numerous Civil War veterans, making it a poignant site for reflecting on the sacrifices made by these brave individuals. * Immigrant history: Many immigrants who settled in the region during the late 19th and early 20th centuries are buried at Homestead Cemetery, showcasing the diverse cultural heritage of the area. * Historical records: The cemetery's records, which have been carefully preserved over the years, provide valuable insights into the genealogies and family histories of those interred within its grounds. While there's veterans from the Civil War, Spanish American War, and both WWI and WWII I was particularly intrigued by the Civil War veterans, that include African American veterans who served in the United States Colored Troops and segregated state units such as the 54th and 55th Massachusetts, the 29th Connecticut, and the 14th Rhode Island regiments. It's noteworthy that it includes only African American enlisted men and non-commissioned officers, and does not include white officers who may have commanded or served with those regiments. In recent years, there have been concerns about the cemetery's future due to a lack of caretakers and a functioning board of directors. However, the local community and historical societies have expressed interest in preserving and maintaining this important landmark for future generations. Bottom line: Homestead Cemetery stands as a testament to the rich history and diverse community of Munhall and the surrounding area. Not impressed at all! We have been trying to order a headstone for my in-laws grave for almost a year. Promises to return phone calls with pricing, but doesn't. We are keeping a log of the phone calls. Going up the "chain of command" gets us nowhere. They already have ~$6,000 from us. What does it take? We would go sit in their office, but we are located on the West Coast. read more

This is a very charming Victorian era cemetery with rolling hills and beautiful groves of trees everywhere you look. It offers an extremely tranquil setting where you can bring you dog for a moderate workout or ride your bike - both of which we saw going on while visiting. There are still tons of plots open for burials, so if you lose your loved one, and want somewhere to bury them in peace, Homewood Cemetery might be a solid option for you. read more

I visited Homewood Cemetery the weekend before last to take a walk with a good friend. Since I'd been to Schenley and Frick Parks that week, I was looking for a change of pace, and the idea of checking out this cemetery occurred to me. My friend fortunately wasn't creeped out by the idea, so we headed over to check it out. Homewood Cemetery is surprisingly large, and is also hillier than one might expect. I believe it connects to Frick Park via a path on the far side, but we just drove over and parked in the lot on the near side. It also has a nice little chapel, though we didn't go inside on this visit. Finally, as one might expect, it has a variety of gravestones. One of my favorite sections was a group of gravestones engraved in Chinese. On the day of our walk, the weather couldn't have been nicer. We strolled along the winding paths among the gravestones, taking in the sights while talking. Some of the more interesting ones included a pond with koi and some wild turkeys that broke the peace by gobbling loudly, startling us. I've seen deer in a cemetery before, but these turkeys definitely took the cake for unexpected sights! While this is a lovely cemetery and certainly one of PGH's best, I prefer Allegheny Cemetery because it contains more large monuments and the graves of some famous denizens of PGH. Having said that, Homewood Cemetery is a great place to escape the city for a bit and go for a walk, esp. if you're looking for something a bit different than the usual parks. Just don't be startled when a wild turkey gobbles at you from behind a gravestone! 4.5 stars. read more

The Homewood Cemetery is historic and beautiful, friendly to walkers and dogs who are leashes it runs right through squirrel hill and is a perfect place for a jog, pandemic friendly first date, or to embrace wilderness. It's a historical landmark and pre-covid the cemetery gave tours for a nominal fee. I have not had the opportunity to take a tour myself but have heard they are very interesting and well worth it! DOG WALKING is not allowed in Homewood Cemetery, and this is posted at the entrances. For the past 3 years I have walked 3 miles daily through the cemetery weather permitting. This the most beautiful, interesting cemetery I've ever been to, including the fancy ones in New Orleans. I was showing off Pittsburgh to my Texas boyfriend and had to bring him here. It was a beautiful fall day, and this place is huge, with a pond, nice big oak trees, rolling hills and all different types of simple to ostentatious gravestones. Like many cemeteries, families are grouped together. There are many large, impressive mausoleums, with stained glass windows and rod iron detailing. It is easy to get lost walking among the families and cultures and hundreds of years of lives that are memorialized here. I think it is the most beautiful park in Pittsburgh. It is a great place to walk and wander among the trees and leaves and gravestones by yourself or with an appreciative partner. read more

Okay I know it's a little weird to review a cemetery, but I'm going to do it. My fiancee and I often drove by and thought this place was beautiful. We were looking for a place to go running which was quiet, serene and peaceful, and we always saw people running at this cemetery. At first I thought it was disrespectful, it is a cemetery not a race track. However, after seeing people running and feeling envious at how free they looked, we decided to try it out and go running here... After much thought, we thought that it might be ok to run at the cemetery because it was like those people laid to rest were getting a visit, having some company. It might sound twisted, but as soon as we started running, it was so relaxing. As we ran amongst the graves, we wondered who all of the people were and what their lives must have been like. The cemetery goes on and on, it it beautiful and peaceful. Of course if we saw anyone who was visiting a grave, we wouldn't even go near them out of respect, but to run in a quiet setting among graves almost felt spiritual. We go running for leisure, health and stress relief, and it really makes you think; when you are running amongst those that have passed, it makes you realize that life is too short to worry about the small stuff. My reviews aren't normally of this nature, however this one had to be. This is a beautiful, well-kept, peaceful place. read more

Not that I go to a lot of cemeteries (I would say maybe 20 in my life so far), but this is the most beautiful cemetery I've been in. I've spent a lot of time in this particular one because it's the best place to go running in the East Side during the winter. (You know, when the sidewalks are icy, Frick park is an icy/slushy mess, and you're forced to play chicken with cars on the street). I know people might think running in the cemetery is disrespectful, but I've talked with one of the directors of the cemetery and they encourage it! (Probably keeps the place safer if you have more [living] people around). It's a beautiful and serene place; perfect for contemplative walks or runs. Few cars to contend with. They do a fantastic job maintaining this cemetery. They also give tours if you want to learn more about the people in the cemetery. i went on one of the tours last fall and it was excellent. The trees inside are amazing too and I know they recently became an arboretum. You can pick up their tree map in the main office. read more

My parents are buried at Homewood. This past weekend in honor of Memorial Day we attended an event at Homewood and were all surprised at how much we enjoyed the event and how much we learned through the speakers about the war. The American Legion Post and Color Guard presented a symbolic table representing POW and MIA memorials, the bag pipe played Amazing Grace and Taps and white doves were set free, afterwards there were refreshments and it was a perfectly organized and pleasant event to attend on a beautiful day at Homewood to take time to remember those who have served and those who continue to serve to make the USA what it is today. Thank you Homewood for making this event available to the public and for keeping your cemetery a peaceful and inspirational place to visit. read more
