After buying a pair of Allen Edmonds last year during some super-mega-blowout-almost-free sale at Nordstrom, I finally realized what all the hype about the brand was about. All my life I was buying sub-$100 dress shoes and becoming frustrated when I had the replace them 6 months later after they disintegrated. Consulting the internet, I stumbled upon AE as a viable brand. I've always avoided them due to their price, but now had the opportunity to buy them at discount. Now, after having that pair for over a year, I decided to start replacing my other dress shoes with AE's and have been using the State Street store to do so. All the employees here have been nothing but a pleasure to work with. They are patient with all of my dumb questions and will not hesitate to bring out multiple sizes/widths to make sure the fit is right. I had a warranty/defect problem with a pair of boots and they exchanged them no questions asked. Similarly, I brought home a pair of oxfords that I swore fit like a glove in the store only to find out at home they were a bit cramped. They exchanged the shoes for me and though they did not have the right size in stock, they shipped them straight from the warehouse right to my apartment at no extra fee. Having owned a few pairs of AE's for a while now, I can safely say that they are my favorite shoe company. Their customer service is on par with Zappos/Amazon and L.L. Bean and the shoes will last me 10-20+ years with proper care and re-crafting. Do the math. If you spend $300 on a pair of AE's and have them re-soled every handful of years, you are saving more money in the long-run over buying crappy $50 shoes every three to six months. Don't let the small size of the store fool you. I dont like buying shoes. In fact I hate it, simply because it is impossible to fit me. My feet are essentially cobblestones. This means that I need wide, non pointy shoes with a good deal of support. Ohh I also wear through things quickly. I started my search at the Newbury St. store, but they informed of a sale happening in a few weeks. The State St. store was very accommodating, allowing me to try on virtually every shoe on a few minutes before they were supposed to close. The sales person was knowledgeable in a shoe sales person type of way (kind of creepy akin to a used car dealer). I ended up with a nice pair of cordovan Bradleys that may break in during the next century. Aside from a few blisters, which was a result of wearing only Crocs and Birks for 6 years. Things are going good. The only downside was the typical upsell of "care" products at the end. I naturally bought most of them, but I kind need them. read more

Wouldn't normally write a review for a retail store but I just started work today in my fly shoes and I have some downtime so figured why not. There was a lady who helped me out who was amazing at her job. So effective while also being efficient. Because of her I was in and out of there in like 10 minutes despite having explored different shoe options, getting a proper fitting, and ordering the shoes I needed. They didn't have them in store but since I needed them the next day she even comped an overnight delivery for me and recommended we ship with UPS because of the time they typically deliver during the day. Literally thought of everything. It's not everywhere (especially big chains) that you get customer service so great so I highly recommend this location. read more

This is an elegant store in an elegant old Boston building, just charming. I had a pair of AE I bought about 18 months ago, which were tight at the time - I thought they would break in and be good. They weren't. I hadn't bought them at this downtown store. When I bought the tight shoes in and asked what could be done, Eva said she would credit the cost I originally paid for the tight shoes and apply it towards any pair of new shoes I wanted. Eva carefully measured my feet. The tight shoes sold to me were a 1/2 a size too small. By the way, the tight shoes had been discontinued. Now that is service. Good luck getting help! After hearing about Allen Edmonds for years and reading positive reviews on Yelp, I decided to give this place a try. Over the years, I've learned that I'm not easy to fit -- my feet are on the small side and quite wide. I read about Allen Edmonds on line and about how much care they put into insuring their customers leave with the perfect fit. Perhaps they excel at shoe "fitting" -- but getting any service was a real chore. I walked in the store around 10 AM and it was empty. There were two employees chatting -- an older woman and a very tall man. Neither acknowledged my presence. Even after 10 minutes in the store alone with the two of them it was as if I was invisible. If the store was busy a cursory hello might have been accepted as I looked at their shoes and waited my turn but the place was EMPTY! And the two employees were just talking away (in a rather animated manner I might add). Finally, I interrupted and asked if I might try on a pair of fun light weight two-tone shoes. I told the woman my size and she told me that at Allen Edmonds and that I would HAVE to get my feet measured before trying on any shoes. I explained that really I did know my size but she insisted. After measuring my foot (the size was identical to what I asked for) she tells me that I didn't really want their sale shoes and that what I NEEDED were traditional black lace up dress shoes. WTF??? These are work shoes but I work in advertising -- I'm not a mortician! Finally, she agrees to get my choice so long as I also tried on hers. Thankfully the phone rang and she picked it up -- dispatching the tall guy to help me. He did get me the shoes I requested but dismissively told me I was wearing the wrong size. He brought me a smaller size and as I walked around the store in pain he tried to up-sell me on every item in the store rather than asking me how I liked the shoes. I have a love/hate relationship when buying shoes. I always seem to purchase shoes that look good on the shelf but that invariably hurt like hell as I blister until I "break them in" at which point I cease to like the way they look because for me "break in" means deforming the shoe.That was before I found Allen Edmonds. I now have a company that makes good looking shoes, proper sized and that delivers a truly exceptional level of customer service! Let me tell you about my experience: I was greeted with a genuine smile and handshake from a friendly guy named Glenn. From the outset, I knew I was dealing with someone who was not merely friendly but also "real". I mentioned my bad experiences to Glenn who measured my foot and then told me a little about what he observed anatomically what it meant to have a foot like mine. He then asked me tell him about how I planed to use my shoes. The whole time he listened attentively rather than jumping in to make a quick sale. It's so refreshing to be treated with respect these days. Glenn assured me that whatever happens - the company is committed to getting the fit right for their customers. So if a shoe feels good in the store but starts to hurt later bring them back and they'll do whatever is necessary so I get a comfortable fit -- even if that means taking back a worn shoe. I was presented with four pairs of shoes one his choices was a little off but three out of four is not bad, not bad at all. I tried all three shoes. One was perfect - the other two were tight but as he explained that was because I needed a larger width. He said he would order it promptly and call me as soon as they arrived. When I explained that I was leaving on a business trip to London in two days he offered to have the shoes brought in by courier to his store from another location! Since he knew I'd be busy he brought them personally to my office to see if they fit -- no pressure to buy! He also brought a belt to go with the shoes (and guessed my size perfectly). My business shoes, called Jefferson are perfect (plus the Adams which also fits like a dream) -- true comfort great looks. When I returned from London I got them in other colors. The next day a personal thank you from Glenn came in my email. Wow. Talk about getting treated right. If you great need shoes (they also carry casual ones) for god's sake go to Allen Edmonds and ask for Glenn. read more

Allen Edmunds is one of the few American dress shoe manufacturers remaining, and they make outstanding products at a fair prices. Their attention to customer service is outstanding. When I had an issue with a pair of shoes, they replaced them free of cost nearly a year later. From now on, I will definitely be buying all my dress shoes from AE. read more

I had a great experience in the AE store, the service was great... but they didn't have the shoes I wanted in my size (13B), so with the store's recommendation I ordered them online to be delivered to my home. The shoes look and feel great; however, after wearing them twice the sole began to come off (the rubber sole delaminating). No problem, this is AE? When I called customer service to have them replaced I was advised that the replacement warranty was voided once I wore the shoes. They could only offer that I send them in for "evaluation", a process that I was told would take a month. These are new shoes! Obviously, I am very dissatisfied with AE quality and customer service. read more

I can't believe that these kinds of brands are willing to ruin their own reputations. HOWEVER, I was shocked that the sales representative in this location treats people like that. Even I got the better service in Mcdonalds Was going to try some shoes to see if they fit.The girl there was EXTREMELY RUDE. She refused to communicate or help. Just imagine that in a small store, a person standing right in front of you is acting weird and ignores you. What a perfect customer service! If you can't show her that you are gross rich or extremely want to buy something, then sorry, she would just ignore you and give you an angry face. I am so disappointed about this brand. I was never treated as bad as this time in any other store. Especially I didn't do anything wrong and just asked for some help. Bought a pair of Allen Edmunds shoes at the AE store in Natick Mall in December. Was told "they'll feel tight, but they'll stretch". Had them stretched 2x, was simply a bad fit. 3 months later I brought them to the Allen Edmunds store in Downtown Boston. I worked w/ Victoria, who was very, very helpful. Victoria researched my prior purchases, all of which were the same size and width, except for the pair of shoes in question. Victoria happily took back the ever so slightly worn shoes and ordered a new pair in the correct size for exchange, and apologized for the inconvenience. Because she was so helpful and kind, I wound up purchasing another item. I highly recommend this store, and specifically this location due to Victoria's professionalism, and helpfulness. Was on the fence of 5 or 4 stars, as they didn't have my size in stock - likely the original problem w/ the Natick guy - but I'm happy to wait 5 days for the right shoes. read more
