They moved 30 boxes of household goods from South Carolina to Maine. The boxes arrived in a timely manner and all the goods were in excellent condition. it was worth the cost to get my things here. read more

Thought they were pleasant enough, however I wouldn't recommend this company to anyone. I moved from Maine to Florida and we have a plethora of problems with these people. First of all they didn't pack everything the day they claimed to be finished and had to come back. Second, I have moved 8 times with the Navy and I have never had to clean up after movers. There was trash in every room INCLUDING soda cans they got from my fridge (almost 24 sodas) that they did ask to drink. I of course would have let them but then to leave the trash for me to clean up? Third, now that I've arrived in Florida the boxes are so poorly labeled that I can't find anything. My favorite? There are more boxes labeled "mud room and game room than anything else. Why is this amusing you ask? We didn't have either of those rooms, no mud room or game room but half my boxes are labeled so. Fourth, items are crushed including my grandmothers wedding hat from 1938, pictures of my children and so on. This company is a disgrace. read more

This was a very short local move (8 m) , great workers for a good price except 3 things were missing, not packed , I personally went back and checked 3 times and the owner of the home looked, this company so far has not taken responsibility , it's more admitting wrong at this point rather than dragging out a 300$ payment as requested, but they never responded, I called several times trying to resolve but the one making decisions is never there. read more

We recently experience a last minute cancellation from the moving company we paid. Our Realtor recommended Don and his team. Don came over the next day, and he had us moved out the last 3 days, last minute thing. His team was very professional and careful of our belongings. New owner, higher rates and zero customer service. I have done business with Allen's since 2005. Not anymore. Increased rates by 60% without prior notice then threatened not to release my belongings until I paid their new Inflated prices (prorated 3 months). Office staff was argumentative and made moving my items infinitely more difficult and stressful than it should have been. Do not do business with Allen's Transfer & Storage, Inc. You will regret it. Do not trust this company!! This is a continuation of the terrible experience Emilie G. wrote about in her previous review. Customer service responded to her review that Lisa was working with us to resolve the issues with the move. That is a lie. It was not until after the movers delivered our belongings and we were forced to pay the remaining balance that we received an itemized invoice for the entire move via email. After reviewing the invoice, we found over $400 in charges for things we did not use. We were billed for materials that we provided and the move time was significantly overestimated. We wrote to them asking for a refund for the items we did not use. We were told our request would be forwarded to the office manager, Lisa, and she would get back to us. After a week with no response I requested Lisa's contact information so I could reach out to her directly. I emailed Lisa to check on our request and did not hear back from her. Over the next couple of days I called Lisa and did not receive a response. I finally got someone from the office to answer and I was told Lisa was the only one who could help me but she was gone for the day (at 3:30pm). I explained who I was and my request. I asked if it is common that it takes over 10 days for her to respond and was told "we share an office with her but we can't really speak to how she goes about things". I was told Lisa would return my call. However I was not asked for my phone number so that she could call me back. Our experience is that this company displays a pattern of dishonesty. I would not wish this experience on anyone. Moving is stressful enough without being lied to, overcharged, and then ignored. Do yourself a favor, find someone else. read more

If you plan to use Allen's Transfer & Storage for your next move, I'd like to offer a word of caution. Pay close attention to the quote you receive or make it simple - go somewhere else. We requested a quote from Jon Carr to have most of the large household items and furniture moved from our old home to storage and then moved from storage to our new residence. We were quoted $1,988. What we did not realize at the time was that this was only the cost to move our items and store them for one month. The quote did not include an estimate for the cost to deliver our goods; a point that was not made clear in Jon's correspondence to us. It was not until our items were delivered that we were then told we owed an additional $1500! Could this have just been an accidental oversight? An innocent mistake? That was not the explanation we received when we asked Jon about this unexpected cost. Jon acknowledged he was aware that we planned to have our things moved to our new home (not kept in storage indefinitely) and that our original request was for a quote to include delivery. When I asked him why we were not provided with this information up front, he explained that this was just his customary way of operating. He referred to it as a "misunderstanding." I would say we were duped. Jon knew that if he had told us at the outset that our move would cost about $3,500, we would have shopped around and he may have lost our business. He knew that his "way of doing things" is a successful sales technique. Quote a low price, conveniently fail to mention that the quote doesn't include everything the customer asked for, get the job, and then make them pay more money later. Two of the movers essentially confirmed this to be true and were entirely unsurprised by our experience; they had seen this and similar scenarios happen several times before. With regard to the the move itself, we were left with uncertainty about whether or not we received all of our things. We believe so, but can't be entirely sure. We have used professional moves on one other occasion. For one thing, the price we were quoted corresponded with our request. Secondly, there was an organized system for keeping track of our items. At the time of pick-up every item that went into the truck was tagged with a numbered sticker. Upon delivery, I was tasked with checking off each number on a list as the item was brought into the home. That system of inventory left no doubt that all of our things made their way to our new home. With this move, our items were tagged with numbered stickers, but we are unsure when this occurred. They weren't tagged when they left our home, but there were stickers on them when they were returned. This was entirely pointless from my perspective since I did not have a way of confirming that the numbers matched an inventory list. Our experience with Jon Carr and Allen's Transfer & Storage added unnecessary frustration to an inherently stressful ordeal. If you don't like surprises (especially surprises that involved shelling out large sums of money), hire someone else. read more

Update to my review: 6-29-22 Today I spoke to the NEW OWNER of this business. It seems the business changed hands over the past week and a half. The new owner was very apologetic for the issues I faced. He also credited back the double billing. Hopefully with his new attention to the business they can again be trusted. Again I will say that the packing of my items and the truck was great. Also the unpacking of my goods was great except for the fact they came a day early with no warning. I will give them the benefit of the doubt and hope they will improve. End of update. I will add my horror to the previous bad reviews. I just did a move from Maine to Ohio. The process started out with some concern on my part. We were waiting for our settlement to be decided. So our date wasn't firm. I got concern from the movers that we needed to pick a date as "things would fill up". I understood their position so my husband and I decided to just pick a date as close as we could to our estimated settlement. It turned out it was a week before. We thought.........fine. We will take a week to get to Ohio. We were assured it would be 7 days to 2 weeks for the goods to arrive. We thought we could work with that. We got to Ohio. I began to check with the movers to see when we could anticipate the arrival of our goods. I was told "well we don't know. There is another person who's goods are going on your truck and she hasn't received her settlement date yet. So we have to wait". I said "how long do we wait? They said I'd have to be "patient" and they would let me know as soon as they did. So I said "hang on". I set my move date BEFORE I had my settlement date and frankly so can this other person. Am I to wait 3 months for her to set a date for her move? Why am I waiting? I was told there was nothing they could do. I was furious. So I called the corporate headquarters of Mayflower to find out if this was standard procedure. All of the brochures and paperwork from Allen's said they were with Mayflower. Mayflower was very apologetic and said this was not their practice.............and then they checked. Turned out Allen's had NOT BEEN part of Mayflower since last MARCH!!!! So they purported themselves to be part of Mayflower when they were not. As far as I was concerned this was false advertising. After several days of wondering if I would ever see my goods, I received an email that my stuff was going to be delivered the following Saturday which would make it 19 days from when they left. OK they told me 2 weeks and it was 19 days. I can live with that. I blocked out Saturday. Guess what happened Friday morning at 8am? Yep the truck arrived. After discussion with the driver (who was ON HIS OWN) we decided to have him unload. I had a very important appointment at 12:30 I could not change but he said he could get done by then. If he had had even ONE PERSON to help him there would have been no issue. But he barely finished. We had to throw boxes into the garage to get him out on our schedule. Note: We paid for unpacking and we paid to have them put the beds together etc. None of this was done. I asked for someone to help me move the boxes from the garage to the basement where they were supposed to go. I got nothing. I asked for a refund of the amount of money I paid for unpacking. I got NO RESPONSE!!!! So me, a 68 year old woman, had to "on my own" move 30 boxes to the basement of my house. Had to put together 2 bed frames and move mattresses. And I had to do all the unpacking myself. The silver lining is that nothing was missing and nothing was broken. Believe me with the mess these people caused me..............I was grateful!!!! The worst incident I faced was on a Friday when I tried to get in touch with the office people. They decided they weren't going to answer their phones. As soon as they saw my phone number that was it. I called every number in the company I could find and left messages with everyone. NO ONE CALLED ME BACK!!! The most shocking behavior of a company I have seen. So do yourself a favor...............pick any other moving company but this bunch. And whoever you pick, if they say they are part of a major moving company.............call the corporate office and check!!!! read more

We have used Allen's moving and storage for several moves. Four moves within Augusta and Hallowell and one out of State move. Also used their storage facility. They do a great job with packing, nothing was broken. Workers are friendly and professional, get the job done. Highly recommended. read more

Use these people at your own peril. Our move went okay. We suffered the usual breakage one always experiences during a move, but this company just keeps on billing and billing. They charged my credit card the day the move was completed. But that wasn't enough for them. They keep adding new charges to my card with absolutely no invoice or explanation. I tried contacting their billing people, but they're not available nor do they return messages. Don't be surprised if you wind up paying twice the amount they estimate. DO NOT use these people! DO NOT use these people. I paid 16K to have my antiques, art, and household furnishings driven from Maine to New Mexico. My favorite 200 year old persian rug had an entire corner ripped in two places and every sideboard, table, chair is gouged or scratched. Haven't had a chance to unpack the boxes that contain Baccarat crystal and Tiffany wedding china yet! The guys who came to pack the truck besides being monosyllabic where extremely rude and I had to get ineffectual "JOHN CARR", the owner's brother who bid the job, to drive to my house to get them to speak to me. If you have expensive items do find another mover. You may not know, as I did not, that paying the higher price to get "Mayflower" gets you "United" which in my experience is bottom of the barrel. My experience with Allen S has been terrible. We moved from Maine to Florida and they did most of the packing and kept our stuff in the storage until we could find a home in FL. When we did, they made us wait for weeks before we could have our moving delivered, as they were always waiting for other stuff to fill the truck. So we had to live in our new house with almost nothing! The worst part came when we received our goods. Many things were broken, some damaged, others completely destroyed. It was clearly the result of a bad job in packing and a worst one in storing and moving our stuff. It looked like they didn't care of what they were handling. When I complained with them it was even worst. The manager was unfriendly, rough, and not willing to help a customer who had been treated so badly. I didn't want to purchase an insurance with them as I already had a home owner's insurance that gives me some kind of protection, but this shoudn't mean that they were allowed to make such a mess. Really, a terrible service. If moving from Maine, do yourself a favor: look somewhere else! read more
