A complete beginner, I initially looked into Alliance Française de Denver after researching several other options in the area. I have since taken five courses and am on my way to being conversational in French. Be aware that this is largely an immersion environment which can be a bit stressful at first, but I think it's absolutely necessary if you're interested in really learning how to use the language functionally. The books that AFD uses are standardized across AF throughout the world, which is good and bad, as a wide range of students' needs have to be met with the materials. The books are all in French, even to start, and are NOT targeted at English speakers at all. I didn't have a huge issue with this because there are many French language resources available on the Internet in English if you are looking for this. At a certain point in learning a language, translating back and forth into English becomes inefficient and problematic anyway in my opinion, so the books avoid that. The books do not really function well outside the classroom setting either and are not independent resources. Teaching is provided by native speakers with a lot of patience and humor. I've had a good experience with every staff member I've interacted with. Courses end with a little potluck with wine and French food - it's a fun environment to learn. Overall, I'm a big fan of AFD and would highly recommend it for anyone considering learning French. read more

I requested a one-on-one teacher to learn business French after having four years of conversational experience so I called to ask about the process and I was told to submit a request online. I did as I was told and it's been over a month with no response. If there's no teachers available, I would appreciate a heads up, but the lack of communication is severely concerning and highly dismissive, and I would not recommend working with this institution due to their unprofessionalism and apparent bias against potential learners. read more

J'aime le Allliance. Six years of attendance and my French is still pathetic, but it is my fault not theirs. All the classes are taught in French by native French speakers. This helps you (forces you) to learn. The instructors teach here because they love their language and it is reflected in their enthusiasm. Friendly and helpful staff. I signed up for a class that looked like a good fit. It looked interesting. In total with class and books and membership (required to take the class) it cost me about $550. I went to the first class and absolutely hated it. I didn't like the set up, the method of instruction, the setting, etc, etc. I talked to the teacher about it after class and she said I should be able to get a full refund. When I asked for a refund from the office they told me that since I had taken the first class that it wasnt refundable. There is no place on the site, the class reservation or my receipt that said no refunds. Eventually they refunded $250. That means that by taking the first class it cost me $300!!! They had terrible customer service throughout the entire ordeal and I still can't believe they won't give me more of my money back. They told me I would have gotten more back if I hadn't gone to the first class but how else would I know that I hated it if I hadn't gone. I had hoped that they would stand by their product. read more

I absolutely adore this organization. I originally sought them out with the goal of taking some classes to attain a basic level of French (having absolutely no background in this language). I really enjoy attending their happy hours and other events. Most recently I attended a lecture on traveling in Morocco which was so much more than I was expecting: we were treated to wonderful stories an visuals as well as food! This place has so much going on all the time (movie nights, discussions, classes) and is truly a gem in this community. My husband and I attended a cheese and wine pairing class, and were completely impressed with the great amount of information we walked away with! Went into Alliance Francais de Denver during the last week of July 2017, at their office on Galapago, to join and sign up for a beginning French A.1 class. Was told they had not figured out their Fall 2017 schedule and it would not be available until late August, even though they said classes would start late September 2017. They said they did not know the days of the week or hours when the classes would be held. I asked how a person was supposed to figure out there schedule when attending college and trying to work, if they do everything at the last minute. All the colleges have published their schedules, other language schools have published theirs. After I left, I felt like it was take it or leave it as far as they were concerned. The classes are small and welcoming and the teachers are top-notch (most are native French speakers). This school hosted a "Bastille Day", advertising "food, drink, crafts, singers, dancers, herb planting, fun things to do for the whole family". The ad says "Stroll throughout our "Maison Francaise" filled with local organizations". I bought $35 all-inclusive wristbands for 5 people, total $175. In truth, we got this: wine for me, the only adult. Water for everyone else. No punch, no soft drinks, literally nothing. "Crafts"? One booth selling preserves. No herb planting. The "stroll" was the size of my driveway. They ran out of food at 6:30pm, for an "event" that was to go until 10pm. We saw one 30-second ballet dance with two people. No singing. No other dancing. "Fun things to do"? Wine pong. I asked for at least a partial refund. No. The woman running it literally ran away from me, calling over her shoulder "more is coming!", so you know damn well I'm not the only one complaining. I found a board member and explained there was no food and I'd paid an outrageous amount for what was actually offered, she tried to throw her own half-eaten baguette at me, after berating me that they were all volunteers. This event is completely FALSE ADVERTISING, nothing but a money-grab for the school. Shame on you, AFD. read more

From their super friendly staff and director, to their effective French classes taught by native French Teachers, to their varied and interesting events, the library of books and DVDs etc .... you can get the real feel of the French culture right here in Denver. Alliance Francaise is an amazing organization that leads people to expanding not only their knowledge of the French language but the culture as well. They often hold events such as French movies or presentations and they are always tons of fun to experience. While they have adult themed events such as cheese and wine tasting they also have events for kids at the children's museum so they provide a little something to every age group! read more
