I recently finished an online Spanish course (due to COVID-19) and I highly recommend it! The instructor, Cecilia, is a native Spanish speaker (with excellent English skills as well!), and she is an amazing teacher. She is passionate about her work, always well-prepared and organized, and very friendly. I learned a lot in her class. Cecilia is excellent at what she does. I also had great experiences with the CFU staff. I have signed up for the next Spanish course and am looking forward to learning more! read more

They should change the name. It is not a free university in any shape or form. I'm not willing to overlook that falsity. The name should be what it is. In these times, I will not support money over the many. What was the concept of putting free into the name? Some marketing gimmick? It's free if you do this that and the other. The guidelines for submitting an idea to instruct a class on a particular subject are quite clear on the website. So,lets say you spend two full business days putting together the course outline and specifics for a class that seems like it could benefit Colorado Free University students. Then wait weeks with no response whatsoever. Send a follow up email. Once again, no response whatsoever. I would have to say that there are some useful courses here presented by a seriously incompetent operations staff. May not be worth your effort to submit an idea, as you may never hear boo from this poorly run institution. read more

I took a sign language class here a few years ago. I'm high functioning autistic. While I'm a little slower at learning things, I tend to excel more rapidly. The teacher seemed knowledgeable with sign language, but not very knowledgeable on certain disabilities that would actually require someone to use ASL. There were a couple times I was asked questions, and instead of waiting a few extra seconds for me to answer, I was passed by. While most of the students were accepting, there were a couple who were absolutely wretched towards me. John Elsted has a rule in his class that only sign language should be used in class, but several times a student would speak very aggressively towards me (literally yelling at me and putting me down in front of the entire class) if I wasn't 100% perfect with something that not even they had understood. Nothing was said or done about it, even though I made it clear I had a developmental disability on day 1 and John had made the only ASL rule clear as well. By the end of the course, I was definitely at the same level as others. While it may still have taken me longer to respond in ASL, just like it does verbally in English when I am learning something new, I was able to understand more quickly what was being said in ASL, just like it is verbally in English. It's. How. Some. Processing. Disorders. Work. John also told the class that he would recommend places we could do further sign language at the end of class and never did. Then later, said we should email him. I emailed 2x and he never bothered to respond. Really disheartening to feel like I was discriminated against for being autistic. I'm giving this place 3 stars because it was a 1 star experience, but I can't speak about the other courses or teachers. read more

I don't know why they call themselves the Colorado FREE University, because it certainly isn't free. One star off for a deceptive name! That said, you can find a variety of mostly-reasonably-priced classes here. Several years ago I took the Stained Glass class and was SO impressed with the skillz I learned! I'm now-- still, like 10 years later-- able to make some pretty cool stuff (if only I had the time). The artsy-craftsy classes are definitely worth your time and money. The cooking classes are too. However... ...I'd avoid the "How to be a Private Investigator" class (if they still offer it, that is). I took it and after being barraged with a wealth of mostly useless knowledge, I set myself loose in the seediest of seedy Denver 'hoods to see which bars were illegally showing some Pay-Per-View boxing match. Um, was I TRYING to get shot? Note to self: little cracka teeny-bopper girl... you don't blend in here. One CFU course does not a Magnum make, and apparently I was missing the red Ferrari and Hawaiian shirts ta' boot. So yeah, that course was beyond worthless, it was borderline dangerous. It gave me the false impression that I was a total badass. REAL Private Investigation is nothing like it is on "Magnum PI," or "Moonlighting." If only I'd known that before wasting the cash. read more

Hey now, talk about a great idea! I finally took my first class with CFU. I'm not sure how I came across it, but hands down, brilliant. Basically they have gathered all of these professionals together to share their skills, hobbies or inspiration with the public for VERY affordable prices. That's how this world should be, sharing is caring:) I took the Jams and Jellies class with Steve Bass this past Saturday. In two and a half hours I came out with the foundation and confidence to do my own canning. I'm so excited! Not only did I learn, but I got to take some home to my friends! I spoke to some of the other ladies in the class, all had wonderful experiences from anything like language classes, to belly dancing. I can't wait to take another course. There is something for everyone and it's not a huge time commitment, so you can't make excuses for not giving it a try. CFU is a great new take on the adult education classes that some colleges offer. The classes are very diverse, from languages, computer applications, art, dance, exercise, spiritual, relationships, financial, travel and much, much, more. I've taken do-it-yourself landscaping, retirement investing, and drawing classes so far. They were all very enjoyable and well worth the fees. All my classes have been at their Lowry building off Quebec which was easy to find and had plenty of parking. I would highly recommend CFU to anyone that wants to continue learning. read more

Do you like to learn something new in an informal, friendly environment? Then get out of the house and check out Colorado Free University. I've taken a number of classes here over the last 2 years and have enjoyed the experience. The classes range from practical, work-related topics, like Microsoft Excel, to ''fun stuff'', such as learning travel tips or some kind of arts-and-crafts hobby. The classes tend to be small (less than 8 people usually) and it's very easy to register. Classes can be dropped up to 72 hours in advance, and there is a wide variety of times and days of the week offered. The teachers I have had here are generally good, although a few did not have highly polished teaching skills. The buildings are a bit hard to find too if you are not familiar with the Lowry neighborhood. But it's a safe and clean neighborhood, so sign-up for something now - no excuses! read more

Colorado Free University offers a lot of interesting classes on the relative cheap (ranging from $35 - $65, as far as I can tell, unless they carry on week after week). There are classes on metaphysics, public speaking, cooking, local history, dance, computers, communications ... and so on. I took an entry level creative writing class. It was very informative and helped me move forward with a book I've been writing for some time now. Professor Erickson (i think thats how you spell it) was great. He even let us know that its okay if you haven't finished a book yet. Writing takes time and persistence. This isn't the place to go for a degree but it's definitely the place to go for life long learning. Im taking a language class next and im sure it will be just as informative and fun. Side note: i have an anxiety disorder and often cannot be around other people but Co Free U made me feel normal. This place is calm and inviting. Adult education for shits and giggles but could give you the balls to start a new career. I've only done 2 of the cooking classes - Asian Meals in Minutes by Yume. I've taken the Thai and Vietnamese classes and now I feel comfortable making Masaman Curry and Thai Beef Salad with my eyes closed and Rice Noodle Bowl with Vietnamese Spring Rolls with my hands cuffed. They offer a plethora of classes ranging from belly dancing to guided ghost walks through town. I have also learned Photoshop, Html, Spanish, and even a yoga class. they are always fun and the teachers do know what they are doing, call them "experts" in the field if you will and yet the prices for classes are reasonable. read more

I have taken many classes at Colorado Free University over the years, and I have nothing but praise for this wonderful institution. There are very few places where you can get a wide variety of classes that are fun and interesting as well as informative, with terrific teachers, small class sizes, and no contrived pressure or rigor for its own sake. You just go there to learn things that interest you. And with all that, the costs are minimal. We all have things we are curious about or interested in, and learning goals to accomplish. And most of us have limited time and money. At Colorado Free University you typically take a one-day or half-day class; you're in and out quickly, you get time with a real good teacher in a small class setting, and you come away with new ideas, inspiration, and knowledge--all for a very reasonable tuition fee. A look through the CFU catalog shows the eclectic mix of classes, many of which do not exist anywhere else. It's impossible to believe that most of these reviews aren't the for-profit kind that are in the news right now. Nothing about the 'Free U' is free and the way they rip off the teaching staff is just this side of criminal. That must be why their turnover in classes, teachers and students is so high. Before I knew better I signed up for several of their classes. After I paid for a class on soap making, the instructor blindsided us with a list of hard-to-find items that we had to bring to class and which would have cost another $75, I estimate. The 'Free U' refused to give me my money back. These people do not live up to their hype. Despite their name, they are only interested in their own profits. read more

Check closely before you enroll. I just made a mistake and didn't. The teachers are not accredited, not certified, and create their own classes. Any credits you think you'll earn will be doubtful when you go to another college. A degree from CFU is going to be worth the newspaper you line the cat box with. Think twice before coming here. This is "education" only in the most generous positive view, not actually college level, and any certifications earned at CFU unlikely to be honored in the job world. Good luck. read more

It would be really great if CFU would show reviews on instructors and individual classes on the sign up site. It isn't fair to rate the school overall. I took 2 Spanish classes that were 4*. Solid instructor, small class, good content. I need to take a conversation class intermittently with the courses, and I would look to CFU to see if I can find one - so, that says something for their Spanish program. The overall 3* is because I also took a Malaysian cooking class ($45+$15-$15 for being a member) that deserves 1*. The guy came in, explained a bit about Malaysia and common ingredients, while we ate some tea and pastries he purchased from somewhere unknown. No hand soap, no dish soap in the ill equipped kitchen (the school's fault). There was one stove against the wall, so he had his back to us, while he added a little of this, and a little of that, plus a lot of a key mixture ingredient he had made before class. One of the dishes was good and I would like to make it. It would be great to have the recipe, but now that it has been a couple weeks, I am guessing I will never see it. The guy is probably a good cook, but he is a crap instructor. We give the feedback forms to the instructor, so I don't see how the school can or has any intention of monitoring teachers, or informing potential students. read more
